Book Synopsis Nearshore Sediment Dynamics, Beaufort Sea by : Donald Ormond Hodgins
Download or read book Nearshore Sediment Dynamics, Beaufort Sea written by Donald Ormond Hodgins and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed set of wave, current, suspended sediment and pore water pressure measurements was made from August 18 to September 24, 1986 at 2 locations offshore of North Head on Richards Island. Because pack ice remained between 100 and 200 km offshore, 1986 was an excellent year for program and two storms with wave heights up to 2.5 m were monitored in shallow water. The objective was to measure changes in pore water pressure and near-bed suspended sediment concentrations in response to storm generated waves and near bottom currents. Ultimately data are to be used to examine liquefaction potential of surficial soils, expected sediment transport rates and mechanics of wave energy attenuation.

Book Synopsis Ecological Comparisons of Sedimentary Shores by : K. Reise
Download or read book Ecological Comparisons of Sedimentary Shores written by K. Reise and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sedimentary coasts with their unique forms of life and productive ecosystems are one of the most threatened parts of the biosphere. This volume analyzes and compares ecological structures and processes at sandy beaches, tidal mudflats and in shallow coastal waters all around the world. Analyses of local processes are paired with comparisons between distant shores, across latitudinal gradients or between separate biogeographic provinces. Emphasis is given to suspension feeders in coastal mud and sand, to biogenic stabilizations and disturbances in coastal sediments, to seagrass beds and faunal assemblages across latitudes and oceans, to recovery dynamics in benthic communities, shorebird predation, and to experimental approaches to the biota of sedimentary shores.
Book Synopsis Sediment Transport in Coastal Waters by : Sylvain Ouillon
Download or read book Sediment Transport in Coastal Waters written by Sylvain Ouillon and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interface of 440,000 km long coastline in the world is subject to global change, with an increasing human pressure (land use, buildings, sand mining, dredging) and increasing population. Improving our knowledge on involved mechanisms and sediment transport processes, monitoring the evolution of sedimentary stocks and anticipating changes in littoral and coastal zones is essential for this purpose. The special issue of Water on “Sediment transport in coastal waters” gathers thirteen papers which introduce the current revolution in the scientific research related to coastal and littoral hydrosedimentary dynamics, and reflect the diversity of concerns on which research in coastal sediment transport is based, and current trends — topics and preferred methods — to address them.

Book Synopsis Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets by : David G. Aubrey
Download or read book Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets written by David G. Aubrey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along much of the shoreline of the world, tidal inlets play an important role in nearshore processes, providing links between the coastal oceans and protected embayments. Their study is of particular importance not only for the understanding of fundamental processes in coastal oceanography but also for engineering and the proper management of the delicate equilibrium of our shorelines. This volume, based on the International Symposium on Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets held at Woods Hole, MA, presents the reader with an overview of contemporary research on these important features. The coverage includes: - mathematical modelling, including a review of inlet hydrodynamics, - observations on hydrodynamics, - sedimentology and morphology, - tidal deltas, - processes and policies pertaining to sedimentation, and the - impacts of shore protection and dredging in beaches.

Special Reference to Physical Processes in Estuaries is briefly outlined in Chapter I. Here I wish to acknowledge those whose support I consider to be pivotal to this under taking. My deepest appreciation goes to Cynthia Vey, whose organizational skills and dedicated effort made the completion of this volume possible. Thanks are also due to Gail Terry for workshop organization, Jean Branson for word processing and Lillean Pieter for helping with drawings. Finally, I must express my sincere appreciation to Arthur Ezra 9f the National Science Foundation for providing support (through Grant No. CEE-8401185) for the workshop, and to Hsiang Wang for depart mental encouragement. With deepest regret, I must note the untimely death of Ranjan Ariathurai, 39, on June 5, 1985, before this volume could be published. He was a guiding force to many within the small group of researchers in cohesive sediment dynamics, and his professional brilliance and inspirational personal qualities constituted the true spirit . behind the workshop. I trust this volume will serve, albeit in a small way, as a fitting memory to this spirit, and to the remarkable professional contributions Ranjan made during his short career. Professor Ray B.
