This type of computer application, generally called electronic printing, enables us to extract and typeset authors and key words for indexing without additional keyboarding. Large and continuing amounts of scientific information are thus made available to create a data bank for retrieval and updating. The complex and specialized nature of the Bureau's subject matter, the increasing volume of its work, the necessity for accuracy, and the need for prompt publication of results have all spurred the Bureau's research into the feasibility and application of electronic printing. This publication, and the increasing number of similarly prepared nbs publications, represents significant progress in realizing this aspect of the computer's potential in photocomposition. New aids incorporated into this supplement should increase its usefulness.
