The two combatant countries India and Pakistan whose war events are subject matter of this work, should never be enemy of each other because they are not only the brothers but also the twins born at the same time and are inseparably linked by the geography of the sub-continent.

Book excerpt: Highlights the state of affairs in nine districts of the erstwhile Central Provinces and Berar, alongwith the interpretation of unknown facts, enlarging it from objective empiricism to historicism on the basis of sociological and historical perspectives. Salient Features (i) It identifies the changeability of the educational pattern from indigenous nature to modern perspectives at all levels. (ii) It highlights the emergence of leadership, new values, nationalism and freedom struggle and also shows how education works as condition, instrument and as an effect of social change in the region. (iii) It explains the extent of adoption and non-adoption of educational facilities at all levels in the context of socio-cultural conditions. (iv) It reveals how English models were initiated too slavishly, students were being crammed with undigested knowledge and teachers obsessed with results. (v) It highlights the Hitavada’s relentless crusade for a separate university, forecast of Jabalpur and Amravati Universities and demand for more autonomy in the province. (vi) It shows how the period of four decades in question transformed a society. (vii) It refers over-all educational backwardness of females, low-castes and aboriginal tribes with a growing assertion of claims to social and political recognition. (viii) It reveals how minorities’ interest in education became manifest through conferences and C.P. Legislative Council. (ix) It highlights positional and structural changes occurred due to education. In short, this book shows how poor ‘peripheral’ society of Vidarbha could make headway on the guidelines of ‘core’ societies and achieve the objective of ‘sustainable development’ through educational expansion.

Book excerpt: Based on the Portuguese sources on the XVIth Century History of India and the anti-colonial struggles in Malabar led by the Zamorin and the House of Kunhali Marakkars. Their role in counteracting the Portuguese expansion deserves an indepth study and analysis. Although the present work is not a comprehensive one on the naval traditions of India, atleast it would help us promote the memory of a forgotten chapter in the History of Kerala and perpetuate the cause of national integration and communal harmony in this great country. The values cherished by the Kunhali Marakkars, to which they dedicated themselves and sacrificed their life, have a meaning for all time to come. This volume is an expression of that sentiment of Nationalism and memory of an epoch in the Asiatic History.

The most neglected aspect of Indian History was the historical geography which Prof. Raychaudhuri analysed vividly and opened new horizons for the scholars of the land to pursue further research in this field. His critical analysis on Indian religion, particularly on Vaishnavism, has earned him immortal fame. For his erudition, he became the member of many learned societies of India including Indian History Congress and served in various capacities contributing in his own way to the growth of knowledge. This book, revealing the contributions of Prof. H.C. Raychaudhuri to the historiography of India, will be indispensable for the students and teachers of Indian historiography. (ii) Welcome light has been thrown on the virgin topics which had been taken up by Prof. Raychaudhuri for analysis. (iii) It is a treasure-house for any student or teacher of Historiography and Indology. (iv) The works of a 'first class mind' have been evaluated with a critical and analytical manner. (v) A clear picture of India' s rich cultural heritage of the past has been projected through the analysis of the works of Prof. Raychaudhuri. (Vi) A peep into the pages of the book will acquaint the readers with the profound scholarship of Prof. H.C. Raychaudhuri as a historian.

Book excerpt: The author's first research work Foreign Influence on Ancient India was published in 1992 and it covered the thought provoking aspects of our history as to how Indian culture was influenced by the foreigners in various ways for the first 1000 years of the recorded history. This book An Era of Peace (Cultural Impact of India on the Ancient World) presents as to how Indian culture influenced the world cultures during the early period of history can, therefore, be said to be the other side of the coin. India played a grand role of ``give and take'' on the world stage which provided the climax in the form of spread of Buddhism to many countries and in return India welcomed the followers of other religions on her soil. Thus India became a land of many religions. If the Achaemeuians Greeks, Sakas, Kushanas or Hunas influenced India in many fields so did India influenced not only the neighbouring countries due to proximity but also the distant lands like Greek, Syria, China and Korea became of universal appeal of Buddhism. In return India also influenced their administration, philosophy, astrology, language, script, trade and commerce. This is a saga of bravery of those Indians who braved the elements and took the noble ideas to the faraway lands.

Book excerpt: India has a strong and ancient tradition of astronomy, which seamlessly merges with the current activities in Astronomy and Astrophysics in the country. While the younger generation of astronomers and students are reasonably familiar with the current facilities and the astronomical research, they might not have an equally good knowledge of the rich history of Indian astronomy. This particular volume, brought out as a part of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of Indian National Science Academy, concentrates on selected aspects of historical development of Indian astronomy in the form of six invited chapters. Two of the chapters – by Balachandra Rao and M.S. Sriram – cover ancient astronomy and the development of calculus in the ancient Kerela text Yuktibhasa. The other four chapters by B.V. Sreekantan, Siraj Hasan, Govind Swarup and Jayant Narlikar deal with the contemporary history of Indian astronomy covering space astronomy, optical astronomy, radio astronomy and developments in relativistic astrophysics. These chapters, written by experts in the field, provide an in-depth study of the subject and make this volume quite unique.

It contains hitherto unpublished material gleaned mainly from public and private archives in India and Israel. The author presents Mahatma Gandhi and C.F. Andrews in a new light. He traces the ``lost'' periods of the Bene Israel sojourn in India: their early settlement; the medieval and Moghul periods; and their heyday under the Marathas. The section on Art deals with a fabulous collection that contains Indian miniatures and manuscripts taken by Nadir Shah when he took the Koh-i-noor and the Peacock throne. The diary kept by the Zionist emissary to India in 1936, Dr. Olsvanger, is published in full in English translation together with his correspondence with Pandit Nehru. The reader is introduced to the Papers of Hermann Kallenbach, Gandhi’s soul friend, and gets a peep into Indian and Israeli archives with one document going back to 1826.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book entitled, “Uprising of 1857: Some Facts about Failure of Indian War of Independence” includes much detail on the nature and character of the Uprising of 1857. Although, it is a general history, which emphasizes every aspect of the Uprising, throws much light on the events, places, and personalities directly concerned to the Uprising of 1857. Many dimensions of the Uprising particularly distinct perspectives such as popular, national, military, religious, etc. has been analyzed in the modern context, and independent research and thinking. The role of different personalities also has been re-evaluated in the light of contemporary and primary sources. By writing this history the author has presented a new look of the Uprising based on critical analysis of the historical facts. This book is a humble attempt to remedy the deficiency which the author has felt after a long experience of reading and writing history. The British slowly and gradually snatched the political power of India from the Native rulers and on the pretext of moral improvement, the British Government adopted an intolerant religious policy, which led to the conversion from oriental religions to Christianity. Both Hindus and Muslims of this country began to feel that their religion was in danger, and particularly the Muslims due to their fanatical pride, and resented the Christian supremacy. Initially, the Indians resented the policies of the British Government and mobilized the civilians and militia through the famous chapati and lotus distribution. Finally, on 10th of May, the final rising exploded from Meerut which followed the long fight throughout North India. The titular Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was enthroned in the Red Fort, and Delhi was made, once again, the capital of India. The entire history covered under different chapters of this book shows the real picture of the revolt. The whole topics are quite interesting, full of knowledge, and based on authentic sources with little hypothetical narrations.
