Book Synopsis Global Positioning System (GPS) Systems Engineering Case Study - Technical Information and Program History of America's NAVSTAR Navigation Satellites by : U. S. Military
Download or read book Global Positioning System (GPS) Systems Engineering Case Study - Technical Information and Program History of America's NAVSTAR Navigation Satellites written by U. S. Military and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of a series of systems engineering case studies prepared by the Air Force Center for Systems Engineering. This case study analyzes the Global Positioning System (GPS). It is a satellite-based radio navigation system. It provides suitably equipped users the capability to precisely determine three-dimensional position and velocity and time information on a global basis. The capability was developed to provide the United States and DoD with worldwide navigation, position, and timing capabilities to support military operations by enhancing ground, sea, and air warfighting efficiencies. However, by presidential directive, it was officially made available to the civilian community in 1983. GPS also provides the capability to conduct time transfer for synchronization purposes through the use of precise time standards. GPS supports a secondary mission to provide a highly survivable military capability to detect, locate, and report nuclear detonations in the Earth's atmosphere and in near-Earth space in real time. The study provides a wealth of technical information about this vital satellite-based system and its complex history. The Department of Defense is exponentially increasing the acquisition of joint complex systems that deliver needed capabilities demanded by our warfighter. Systems engineering is the technical and technical management process that focuses explicitly on delivering and sustaining robust, high-quality, affordable solutions. The Air Force leadership has collectively stated the need to mature a sound systems engineering process throughout the Air Force. Gaining an understanding of the past and distilling learning principles that are then shared with others through our formal education and practitioner support are critical to achieving continuous improvement. Download or read book NAVSTAR Global Positioning System written by Rudolph T. Schwab and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) is an all-weather, jam-resistant, continuous-operation, space-based, passive radio navigation and positioning system. The GPS consists of three segments: the Space Segment, the Control Segment, and the User Segment. The United States Armed Forces will purchase over 20,000 GPS user sets, with the US Army buying 6,000 sets. This article for publication will provide the Army soldier with an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of GPS. The article includes a short history on why GPS was developed, discusses the three GPS segments, and provides examples on how GPS will enhance US Army operations.
Book Synopsis Sustaining the Global Positioning System by : Earl M. Peabody
Download or read book Sustaining the Global Positioning System written by Earl M. Peabody and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the significant challenges in sustaining and upgrading The Global Positioning System (GPS). The GPS provides positioning, navigation, and timing data to users world-wide, and has become essential to U.S. national security and a key tool in an expanding array of public service and commercial applications at home and abroad. GPS is integrated into nearly every facet of U.S. military operations, and the number of civil users is increasing. Other countries are now developing their own independent global navigation satellite systems that could offer capabilities that are comparable, if not superior to GPS. The U.S. government, which plans to invest more than $5.8 billion from 2009 through 2013 in the GPS space and ground control segments currently under development, provides GPS service free of charge. The Department of Defense (DoD) develops and operates GPS, and an interdepartmental committee manages the U.S. space-based positioning, navigation and timing infrastructure, which includes GPS. This book looks at the global economic and national security importance of GPS, the ongoing GPS modernisation effort and the international efforts to develop new systems.
