Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our emotions influence our responses and subsequent reactions to change or to life's experiences. For a lot of us, our formal and informal education systems did not provide the skills to navigate the changes and challenges we encounter in life. The good thing, though, is that we can still learn it along the way, at whatever stage we are in life. I experienced this kind of learning on the Nile River--rafting without prior knowledge but with willingness to learn, change the status quo, practice, become better, and be flexible enough to let adventure in. I was a mediocre paddler, and I didn't know how to swim--but I was willing to learn. It is out of that adventure that I am able to reflect on the metaphor of a river as our daily life. The key lessons I took from the river raft that I have seen as key in learning and applying emotional intelligence in our lives for overall success are: Know your course. Stay present. Don't give power to external conditions. Adapt purposely. Have some tools and options. Team with people who are creating the results that you want. Don't flow back on yourself: Get out of obstructions as soon as possible--your whole life still awaits you! Recharge. Flow on purpose and live. Celebrate the unsung hero inside you.

Franz Krause examines fishing, transport and hydropower on the Kemi River and analyses the profoundly rhythmic patterns in the river dwellers' activities and the river's dynamics. The course of the seasons and weekly and daily rhythms of discharge, temperature, work and other patterns make the river dwellers' world an ever-transforming phenomenon. The flows of life and the frictions of everyday encounters continually remake the river and its inhabitants, negotiating national strategies, economic power, people's ingenuity, and the currents of the Kemi River.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STEP -BY-STEP WELLNESS BLUEPRINT Do you occasionally find yourself dragged into the never-ending whirlpool of interrogations and become stuck constantly? Do you always hear the following sounds playing in your head? Why are we here? Why should we coexist peacefully? Why is letting go of the past baggage important? How can waiting until later decrease the power of our dreams? How does gratitude work its magic? How does nature nourish? How do relationships become toxic, and how do they get back on track? How has parenting changed in this digitally advanced era, and how can the strength and enthusiasm of young people be harnessed? Why does this only occur to me? If so, you have made the right buddy and are at the perfect place. The difficulties that arise from all areas of life and ultimately drive us into the depths of stress, anxiety, and fear—the modern-day demons—tend to be solved step-by-step in this book. We all experience stress now that we have adopted a modern lifestyle, but we are not even aware of it. A harmonious state seems far away, and any disturbance to the body and mind's equilibrium causes stress. Career, life, relationship, marriage, wealth creation, etc., if all these things fall into place, life becomes meaningful, but if there is an incongruity between our current state and the desired state, it undoubtedly gives birth to stress. This book gives readers insight into how crucial it is to manage stress lest it wreck our lives and turn us into psychologically and emotionally ill individuals. This book not only outlines some very straightforward yet effective techniques and suggests some small adjustments to daily routines that one should make in order to reduce stress and make life itself meaningful, but it also divulges the key to transformational radiance and energy. This book seeks to address the HOW and WHY of our existence, to put it briefly.

Book excerpt: "Invaluable for so many partners looking to reconnect and grow closer together." —Gwyneth Paltrow, founder and CEO of goop "Stan Tatkin can be entirely followed into the towering infernos of our most painful relationship challenges." —Alanis Morissette, artist, activist, and wholeness advocate The complete “insider’s guide” to understanding your partner’s brain, sparking lasting connection, and enjoying a romantic relationship built on love and trust—now with more than 170,000 copies sold. “What the heck is my partner thinking?” “Why do they always react like this?” “How can we get back that connection we had in the beginning?” If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions, you aren’t alone, and it doesn’t mean that your relationship is doomed. Every person is wired for love differently—with different habits, needs, and reactions to conflict. The good news is that most people’s minds work in predictable ways and respond well to security, attachment, and routines, making it possible to neurologically prime the brain for greater love and connection and fewer conflicts. This go-to guide will show you how. Drawn from neuroscience, attachment theory, and emotion regulation, this highly anticipated second edition of Wired for Love presents cutting-edge research on how and why love lasts, and offers ten guiding principles that can improve any relationship. This fully revised and updated edition also includes new guidance on how to manage disagreements, as well as new exercises to help you create a sense of safety and security, establish healthy conflict ground rules, and deal with the threat of the third—any outside source which threatens the harmony in your relationship, including in-laws, alcohol, children, and affairs. You’ll find proven-effective strategies to help you strengthen your relationship by: Creating and maintaining a safe “couple bubble” Using morning and evening routines to stay connected Learning how to see your partner’s point of view Meeting each other halfway in a fight Becoming the expert on what makes your partner feel loved By using simple gestures and words, you’ll learn to put out emotional fires and help your partner feel appreciated and loved. You’ll also discover how to move past a “warring brain” mentality and toward a more cooperative “loving brain.” Most importantly, you’ll gain a better understanding of the complex dynamics at work behind love and trust in intimate relationships. While there’s no doubt that love is an inexact science, if you understand how you and your partner are wired differently, you can overcome your differences, and create a lasting intimate connection.

Heel to toe, connected at the waist by a pair of carabineers that’s connected to nothing else, they stare down the North Face of Mount Everest, a red and white nylon tandem paragliding wing fluttering behind them. They know that jumping off the top of the world marks only the beginning of a longer, more audacious journey. And they know that the two-mile ride down Everest will be the easiest part. If the jump doesn’t kill them. In April 2011 the two unsponsored Nepalis set out on an unprecedented expedition to climb Everest, paraglide from its peak, and paddle nearly 400 miles to the ocean. Little problems wouldn’t stop them. Like the fact that Babu had no technical climbing experience. And that Lakpa had never been kayaking—or swimming. But after summiting, surviving their flight off the world’s tallest mountain, and being arrested, robbed, and nearly drowned—repeatedly—the two friends discovered their adventure had only just begun.

Book excerpt: Award-winning journalist Zak Podmore brings to life the magnificent terrain and complex politics of the Colorado River, its dying reservoirs—and the surprising revelation that the inevitable loss of Lake Powell could be a turning point for more a sustainable future. “A chronicle of ecological redemption.” —KEVIN FEDARKO After decades of drought, the American West is stretched to the breaking point. A changing climate and design flaws in the Glen Canyon Dam have pushed the once-massive Lake Powell reservoir to the brink of collapse—putting at risk millions of people who depend on the Colorado River for water, agriculture, and electricity. Now, as Glen Canyon reemerges, its surprising ecological rebirth reminds us that nature’s capacity to heal may well outpace our own imaginations. Environmental journalist Zak Podmore explores the complex challenges ahead and reframes the inevitable loss of Lake Powell as a turning point for a more sustainable future. Through an arresting mix of science and storytelling, Life After Dead Pool debunks the notion that the West’s water challenges are unsolvable and invites us to secure a future where the Colorado River once again runs free.

Book excerpt: Surfers, sailors, and anyone who loves the ocean will enjoy this visual exploration of the world's seas along its shores, including rip tides, swells, waves, and tsunamis. Tide is the vertical motion of water, something so subtle it is impossible to see with the naked eye. Inspired by his travels around the world's coastline in a camper van with his young family, William Thomson captures the cycles of the sea's movement, and intersperses his adventures surfing the waves and charting the tides. Throughout Tides and the Ocean are his graphic renderings of unusual tidal maps, as well as other forms of water movement, including rip, rapids, swell, stream, tide, wave, whirlpool, and tsunami. Tides and the Ocean explains how the tides surge when the moon and sun align with the earth; how ocean streams alternate direction every six hours (which is invaluable information for kayakers, paddle boarders, and fishermen); why skyscraper-sized tsunamis occur frequently in an Alaskan Bay; and the most deadly beach orientation for rip currents. Also emphasized throughout is the importance of keeping the world's oceans healthy and full of life. Published in time for beach travel, this large-format hardcover is ideal for anyone who knows and loves the sea, and who wants to understand, discover, surf, or sail it better.
