Book Synopsis Resiliencia, gestión del naufragio by : Pilar Gómez-Acebo
Download or read book Resiliencia, gestión del naufragio written by Pilar Gómez-Acebo and published by Editorial Almuzara. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Reading Literature in Portuguese by : Claudia Pazos Alonso
Download or read book Reading Literature in Portuguese written by Claudia Pazos Alonso and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection brings together textual commentaries on thirty representative works of literature in Portuguese - either complete poems or extracts from longer works - ranging from the medieval lyric of the 13th century, through the poetry and drama of the Portuguese Renaissance, the great Realist novels of the nineteenth century, early twentieth century Modernism and post-1974 writings through to the present day, while also including examples of 19th- and 20th- century Brazilian literature. The authors chosen - poets, dramatists and novelists - are generally regarded as iconic writers, and the three most famous canonical Portuguese authors (Luis de Camoes, Fernando Pessoa, Jose Saramago) are featured, but the texts selected for commentary strike a balance between a focus on well-known and lesser-studied works. All the primary texts are reproduced in Portuguese, sometimes in original editions, with English translations added for the majority. The contributors variously explicate and contextualise the works they present, some focusing on hidden meaning, others on philological aspects of editing, others on their historical, intellectual and philosophical context, and others still on the process of translation itself. All, however, aim to develop the art of reading, for the benefit of scholars and students alike. Stephen Parkinson and Claudia Pazos Alonso are members of the Sub-Faculty of Portuguese at Oxford University, and editors of the Companion to Portuguese Literature (Tamesis, 2009)."
Book Synopsis Manifest Perdition by : Josiah Blackmore
Download or read book Manifest Perdition written by Josiah Blackmore and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipwreck, death, and survival; terror, hunger, and salvation -- these are the experiences of those onboard merchant Portuguese ships in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In this book we see how the dramatic, compelling, and often gory accounts of shipwreck, collected in Historia Tragico-Maritima (1735-36), or The Tragic History of the Sea, challenge state-sponsored versions of events. Manifest Perdition reveals the important place of these stories in literary history and shows -- for the first time -- how they serve as both a product of and a resistance to Iberian expansion and colonialism. Download or read book Between the Devil and the Deep written by Della A. Scott-Ireton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In creating interpretive strategies for maritime sites, archaeologists and resource managers often are required to think creatively to overcome challenges and problems. These issues include interpreting sites in inaccessible locations and extremely deep water, enabling and controlling access to fragile sites and restricted areas, monitoring visitor behavior, making information interesting to a wide audience, and creating opportunities for public engagement, among other concerns. Meeting Challenges presents cutting-edge interpretation and public education strategies for maritime resources, both on land and underwater, with emphasis on solving the unique problems often associated with presenting these fragile, limited-access sites as heritage attractions and on developing effective visitation and civic engagement opportunities. The examples presented ideally can serve as models for resource managers, archaeologists engaged in interpretation, and site administrators. This volume brings together a diverse group of heritage professionals to discuss issues they’ve encountered and to present ideas and case studies for adapting, improvising, and overcoming them.

Book Synopsis Shipwrecks, Legal Landscapes and Mediterranean Paradigms by : Emilia Mataix Ferrándiz
Download or read book Shipwrecks, Legal Landscapes and Mediterranean Paradigms written by Emilia Mataix Ferrándiz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in Open Access thanks to the support of the University of Helsinki. This book changes our understanding of the Roman conceptions about the sea by placing the focus on shipwrecks as events that act as bridges between the sea and the land. The study explores the different Roman legal definitions of these spaces, and how individuals of divergent legal statuses interacted within these areas. Its main purpose is to chart and analyse the Roman conception of the maritime landscape from the Late Republican until the Severan period. This book integrates maritime history and ethnography with the physical remains of past maritime systems, such as shipwrecks, ports, villages, fortifications, and documented legal rulings.
Book Synopsis Further Selections from the Tragic History of the Sea, 1559-1565 by : C.R. Boxer
Download or read book Further Selections from the Tragic History of the Sea, 1559-1565 written by C.R. Boxer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Being about to write down the disastrous voyage of this great ship, it occurred to me how rash men are in their undertakings, chief among which, or one of the greatest is confiding their lives to four planks lashed together, and to the discretion of the furious winds.' So wrote Henrique Dias, an eye-witness of the wreck of the Sao Paulo off Sumatra and the subsequent fate of the survivors. His account is one of three narratives, here translated into English for the first time, of certain shipwrecks which befell the Portuguese in the mid-16th century. The other two describe the wrecking of two East Indiamen off the East African coast, and the misadventures of a voyage from Brazil to Lisbon. In his introduction, Professor Boxer describes the lives of the three chroniclers, and gives bibliographical details of their works. The narratives are translated from the original accounts which Bernardo Gomes de Brito included in his História Trágico-Marítima (Lisbon, 1735-36). The present volume forms a companion to Professor Boxer's earlier work The Tragic History of the Sea, 1589-1622 (Hakluyt Society, 1959). This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1968.
Download or read book Sanctuary Line written by Jane Urquhart and published by MacLehose Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice Munro hails Urquhart's "most compelling depiction of the sense of place in human lives." "Urquhart's writing is poetic, in the sense that it is beautifully compact and restrained when describing the most powerful emotions," says The Times. The author Claire Messud praises her as having "a great gift for the historical novel, for the melding of ideas, events and individuals into a significant whole." In Sanctuary Line Urquhart has created a nuanced and moving novel about family legacies, love, and betrayal. Solitary, nostalgic Liz Crane returns to her family's now-deserted farmhouse--once the setting for countless happy summers spent on the northern shore of Lake Erie--to study the migratory habits of the Monarch butterfly. Encompassing all the colorful stories and blarney of successful Irish immigrants who have made the most of their relocation to North America, the Cranes' rich family history is now circumscribed by sadness. Liz's beloved cousin Amanda, a gifted military strategist, has been killed in Afghanistan, a loss that had been foreshadowed many years in the past by the disappearance of Amanda's charismatic father. Reflecting on the fragility and transience of human life and relations--mirrored in the butterflies' restless flight patterns and transcontinental migrations--Liz finds that love is there to be found where, and when, you least expect it.
Book Synopsis Cuba, the Media, and the Challenge of Impartiality by : Salim Lamrani
Download or read book Cuba, the Media, and the Challenge of Impartiality written by Salim Lamrani and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concise and detailed work, Salim Lamrani addresses questions of media concentration and corporate bias by examining a perennially controversial topic: Cuba. Lamrani argues that the tiny island nation is forced to contend not only with economic isolation and a U.S. blockade, but with misleading or downright hostile media coverage. He takes as his case study El País, the most widely distributed Spanish daily. El País (a property of Grupo Prisa, the largest Spanish media conglomerate), has editions aimed at Europe, Latin America, and the U.S., making it is a global opinion leader. Lamrani wades through a swamp of reporting and uses the paper as an example of how media conglomerates distort and misrepresent life in Cuba and the activities of its government. By focusing on eight key areas, including human development, internal opposition, and migration, Lamrani shows how the media systematically shapes our understanding of Cuban reality. This book, with a preface by Eduardo Galeano, provides an alternative view, combining a scholar’s eye for complexity with a journalist’s hunger for the facts.
