Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Through Microscope and Camera Hose Who have once attempted to catch a glimpse of the wonderful secrets that Nature will unveil to the earnest and discreet searcher can never again look upon things as common or of little importance because they do not display to the eye of the superficial observer the beauties that lie hidden under an unattractive appearance or are shrouded in size so minute that the ordinary eye is incapable of discerning their exquisite plan and detail. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II The Microscope And Optical Apparatus The primary essentials in photo-micrography are a microscope and a camera, or their equivalents. These may be combined in one instrument, as was actually done in a commercial way by the Atwood Camera-Microscope a number of years ago, but long since discarded "for good and sufficient reasons." There must be a lens to magnify the object and project its enlarged image--either direct or through an eye-piece--upon the sensitized plate, which in turn must be held in position to receive it by a camera or some contrivance answering the same purpose. Of these, the microscope is the more important, since with no camera, however complete in design and workmanship, can one make even a passable photo-micrograph, if the optical portions of his apparatus, --the lenses or objectives, --are not properly corrected for the work. Almost every one may, at a pinch, construct something that will answer for a camera, but very few of us can make a microscope; hence this indispensable must be purchased, and should be selected with the greatest care. Its first cost may be whatever sum one chooses to invest in it: after that, with proper care, its cost for maintenance is nothing. The camera, on the other hand, must be continually supplied with food in the shape of sensitive plates. Between the two, however, the earnest and diligent worker will receive the reward of his labors in the shape of more or less perfect negatives, as his skill or lack of it can produce. Microscopes specially designed for photomicrography, of superb workmanship and combining every improvement and device calculated to fit them for the highest grade of work, may be had--for a price. But it is not with these we have to deal in this little book....

Book excerpt: This authoritative book provides a comprehensive review of the highly important subject of non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. Engineers have a range of sophisticated techniques at their disposal to assess the condition of reinforced concrete structures that do not cause material damage and which usually enable the structure to be used while the surveys are carried out. Non-destructive evaluation of the infrastructure also plays a key role in calculating and prioritising where money should be spent on repair or replacement. Providing details of related techniques and case studies, this book offers an overview of how to plan and implement the NDT of reinforced concrete structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of magnesium alloys is increasing in a range of applications, and their popularity is growing wherever lightweight materials are needed. This book provides a comprehensive account of the corrosion of magnesium alloys. It covers not only the corrosion performances and mechanisms of Mg alloys in conventional environments, such as sodium chloride solutions, but also looks at their corrosion behaviours in special media, like engine coolants and simulated body fluids. Part one covers fundamentals such as the corrosion electrochemistry, activity and passivity of magnesium and its alloys. Part two then considers the metallurgical effect in relation to the corrosion of magnesium alloys, including the role of micro-structure and earth-rare elements, the corrosion behaviour of magnesium-based bulk metallic glasses, and the corrosion of innovative magnesium alloys. Part three goes on to describe environmental influences on the corrosion of magnesium alloys, such as atmospheric corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, creep and fatigue behaviour, and galvanic corrosion. Finally, part four is concerned with various means of protecting magnesium alloys against corrosion through the use of aluminium electrodeposition, conversion and electrophoretic coatings, and anodisation. With its distinguished editor and team of contributors, this book is an invaluable resource for metallurgists, engineers and designers working with magnesium and its alloys, as well as professionals in the aerospace and automotive industries.
