Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Naturalist in Himalaya This volume is what its name suggests. It is a record of observations in natural science. It is an endeavour to gather many and varied facts into one common theme. The observations which it describes have been collected at intervals between the years 1914 and 1916 in the Himalayan valley of Hazara. They have been made slowly, gathered intermittently and then arranged with some attempt at order so as to appear in a collected whole. My narrative will fall into different parts in accordance as my observations refer to different forms of animal life. I will commence with a brief description of the valley itself in order that the reader may appreciate the more striking geographical features of the district in which the subsequent observations were made. In the next four chapters I will discuss the habits, instincts and general economy of certain species of ants that are to be found everywhere in the valley. I will then pass to a series of observations on the natural history of spiders, especially with regard to the wonderful geometrical powers employed in the construction of their circular snares. In the tenth, eleventh and twelfth chapters I have collected a number of varied facts and suggestions that relate to the economy of insect life. Book excerpt: The Eastern Himalaya -- land of Gods, of ancient mountain kingdoms, of icy peaks and alpine meadows -- is like no other place on Earth. The life and landscapes of the region are as diverse, spectacular, and fragile as the mountains themselves. Even today, these mountains hold many mysteries: unnamed species, primeval cultures, and the promise of magical cures to heal all of humanity. This book takes us on a journey of biocultural discovery -- from the great canyon of Yarlung Tsangpo and the Siang Gorge in the east to the Kali Ganda ki Gorge in the west. Along the way, the book demonstrates, in breathtaking imagery and words, why the preservation of this heritage is so important -- not just for us, but for the future of all life on Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses plant invasions and environmental impacts on the Himalayas through a novel procedure, and helps to understand the influences of climate, physiography, soil, and disturbance on plant richness in mountain systems. Assessing invasion risks to mountain space under future climate change scenarios is highly significant for appropriate preparedness, and this book details analytical and modeling techniques to assess the conditions of mountain ecosystem and ecology to better inform our preparation for future environmental challenges. The book presents the state-of-the-art understanding of the species-environment relationships in a global biodiversity hotspot, relatively unexplored areas for the Himalayan life-form richness. The book provides not only the academic but also the professional community and policymakers a review and update on modeling applications for determining interactions of the plant species with the environment of a subtropical mountain ecosystem across a climatic gradient. Currently, there is no book in the market addressing the implementation and applications of modeling in the Himalayan plant and environment continuum, and most of the existing books cover the species richness pattern along the elevation gradient and basic ethnobotanical features of a mountain system. Since the book covers the applications of novel methods and modeling for ecological analysis of mountain ecosystems, it will also be significant for the professional market. Therefore, the book aims to fill the gap between scientists and professionals in the use of modeling strategies to monitor biodiversity in mountain systems for the formulation of conservation, adaptation, and mitigation principles.

Book excerpt: The study of environmental history is no more only of forests, rivers, but also of agriculture, climate, economic practices and human culture. In recent times environmental studies as a discipline has come to the forefront with growing concerns over the ozone layer depletion but has led to investigation of the historical factors and processes of man and environment relationship and its impact. Very little was earlier known about the devastative impact on the environment of imperialism, state capitalism of post-colonial nations and the liberalization and globalization of these economies. There is no aspect of the environment which has not felt the impact of such developmental human process. Rivers have thus either dried up or are polluted with highly toxic materials, seas and oceans have become the dumping ground of nuclear and other wastes, streams are blocked, rains reduced, forest covers depleted, wildlife has dwindled, concrete jungles have replaced green fields and natural water-bodies, desertification of landscapes has happened. It has had its own impact on human life as well. Droughts, floods, dust storms, landslides, water shortage, agricultural decline and food crisis, starvation and epidemics followed. The planet earth and its inhabitants are currently in the throes of the most devastating man-made crisis for survival. In an attempt to enhance our understanding of the environmental crisis, the present collection has essays investigating wide ranging events ranging from understanding climate from logbook of East India Company to the construction of Himalayan tropics; environmental cost of damming the Damodar River to water politics of south India; impact of Tsunami of the years 1737 as well as of 2004-5; politics over earthquake rehabilitation to the Sarna movements of eastern Indian tribals.

Focusing on the mammals of the Himalayan region, the book draws largely on the pioneering work of S.H. Prater and R.A. Sterndale.
