Book Synopsis Michelangelo's Christian Mysticism by : Sarah Rolfe Prodan
Download or read book Michelangelo's Christian Mysticism written by Sarah Rolfe Prodan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Sarah Rolfe Prodan examines the spiritual poetry of Michelangelo in light of three contexts: the Catholic Reformation movement, Renaissance Augustinianism, and the tradition of Italian religious devotion. Prodan combines a literary, historical, and biographical approach to analyze the mystical constructs and conceits in Michelangelo's poems, thereby deepening our understanding of the artist's spiritual life in the context of Catholic Reform in the mid-sixteenth century. Prodan also demonstrates how Michelangelo's poetry is part of an Augustinian tradition that emphasizes mystical and moral evolution of the self. Examining such elements of early modern devotion as prayer, lauda singing, and the contemplation of religious images, Prodan provides a unique perspective on the subtleties of Michelangelo's approach to life and to art. Throughout, Prodan argues that Michelangelo's art can be more deeply understood when considered together with his poetry, which points to a spirituality that deeply informed all of his production.

Book Synopsis Dante’s Prayerful Pilgrimage by : Alessandro Vettori
Download or read book Dante’s Prayerful Pilgrimage written by Alessandro Vettori and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dante’s Prayerful Pilgrimage Alessandro Vettori provides a comprehensive analysis of prayer in Dante’s Commedia. The underlying thesis considers prayer a metaphorical pilgrimage toward a sacred location and connects it with the pilgrim’s ascent to the vision of the Trinity. Prayer is movement in Purgatorio and also in Paradiso, while eternal stasis is the penalty of blasphemous souls in Inferno. In the fictional rendition of the poem, the pilgrim’s itinerary becomes a specular reflection of Dante’s own exilic experience. Prayer’s human-divine interaction affords the poet the necessary escape from the overwhelming sense of failure in politics and love. Whether it is petitional, liturgical, thankful, praiseful, or contemplative, prayer expresses the supplicant’s wish to transform reality and attain a superior spiritual status. See inside the book.
Book Synopsis Visual Global Politics by : Roland Bleiker
Download or read book Visual Global Politics written by Roland Bleiker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a visual age. Images and visual artefacts shape international events and our understanding of them. Photographs, film and television influence how we view and approach phenomena as diverse as war, diplomacy, financial crises and election campaigns. Other visual fields, from art and cartoons to maps, monuments and videogames, frame how politics is perceived and enacted. Drones, satellites and surveillance cameras watch us around the clock and deliver images that are then put to political use. Add to this that new technologies now allow for a rapid distribution of still and moving images around the world. Digital media platforms, such as Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, play an important role across the political spectrum, from terrorist recruitment drives to social justice campaigns. This book offers the first comprehensive engagement with visual global politics. Written by leading experts in numerous scholarly disciplines and presented in accessible and engaging language, Visual Global Politics is a one-stop source for students, scholars and practitioners interested in understanding the crucial and persistent role of images in today’s world.
Book Synopsis Implicit Leadership Theories by : Birgit Schyns
Download or read book Implicit Leadership Theories written by Birgit Schyns and published by IAP. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third volume in the Leadership Horizons series. This series, started by Jim Meindl, is devoted to new developments in theory and research on leadership within the context of continuing and emerging organizational issues. In this spirit, the present volume delves into implicit leadership theories (ILTs), and opens intriguing new avenues for research on ILTs, but does so while maintaining an eye on the past. For example, the book offers valuable historical perspectives from those who were "there" - Dov Eden and Uriel Leviatan share the inside scoop on the origination of the concept of ILTs, and Bob Lord traces the evolution of social-cognitive perspectives with respect to work on ILTs - while all authors raise interesting questions and offer important new directions to advance this work well into the future. It features a wide range of scholars and perspectives, and practical implications are implicit and explicit throughout the volume. The book offers a valuable resource for researchers, students, and practitioners interested in leadership and social cognition in the workplace.
Book Synopsis The Hard Road to Renewal by : Stuart Hall
Download or read book The Hard Road to Renewal written by Stuart Hall and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuart Hall's writings on the political impact of Margaret Thatcher have established him as the most prescient and insightful analyst of contemporary Conservatism Collected here for the first time with a new introduction, these essays show how Thatcher has exploited discontent with Labour's record in office and with aspects of the welfare state to devise a potent authoritarian, populist ideology. Hall's critical approach is elaborated here in essays on the formation of the SDP, inner city riots, the Falklands War and the signficance of Antonio Gramsci. He suggests that Thatcherism is skillfully employing the restless and individualistic dynamic of consumer capitalism to promote a swingeing programme of 'regressive modernization'. The Hard Road to Renewal is as concerned with elaborating a new politics for the Left as it is with the project of the Right. Hall insists that the Left can no longer trade on inherited politics and tradition. Socialists today must be as radical as modernity itself. Valuable pointers to a new politics are identified in the experience of feminism, the campaigns of the GLC and the world-wide response to Band Aid.

Book Synopsis War and Algorithm by : Max Liljefors
Download or read book War and Algorithm written by Max Liljefors and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New military technologies are animated by fantasies of perfect knowledge, lawfulness, and vision that contrast sharply with the very real limits of human understanding, law, and vision. Thus, various kinds of violent acts are proliferating while their precise nature remains unclear. Especially man–machine ensembles, guided by algorithms, are operating in ways that challenge conceptual understanding. War and Algorithm looks at the increasing power of algorithms in these emerging forms of warfare from the perspectives of critical theory, philosophy, legal studies, and visual studies. The contributions in this volume grapple with the challenges posed by algorithmic warfare and trace the roots of new forms of war in the technological practices and forms of representation of the digital age. Together, these contributions provide a first step toward understanding—and resisting—our emerging world of war.

The authors are a mix of leading experts in technology, business, policy, intelligence, and geopolitics, partnered with experienced special operators who either cowrote the chapters or reviewed them to ensure accuracy and relevance for SOF. Our goal is to provide insights into the changes around us and generate ideas about how SOF can adapt and succeed in the emerging operational environment.
