Book excerpt: This study explores the emergence and development of the conservation movement in Argentina during the twentieth century. I argue that the development of the conservation movement has been linked to shifts in the broader spectrum of Argentina's political arena as well as the international political situation as nations competed for the sovereignty of newly acquired territories after the Indian Wars. This book explores the development of Argentina as a nation in relation to conservation of its natural resources as a counter measure to resource extraction. Thus, I establish the relationship between the need for national sovereignty and socio-economic development via the formulation of nature based tourism industry. This strategy was developed by Excequiel Bustillo and spearheaded by the formation of National Park System. The environmental movement in Argentina has been based on the principles of utilitarianism, and the National Park System of Argentina was instrumental in establishing hegemonic national identity and sovereignty in Patagonia. The National Park System institutionalized and for many years was the leading force behind conservation of Argentina's natural resources, and it fostered social and economic development of remote areas through nature based tourism practices.

Book excerpt: Much of the discussion surrounding the definition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 global development agenda has contextualized sustainable development within the framework of ‘transformation’, specifically prioritizing concepts such as equity, security, justice, and rights. While these debates correctly discussed power imbalances and relational obstacles to human development they have remained abstract because they focused only on the international level. In this regard, discussions have not adequately examined mechanisms that facilitate or block the emergence of sustainable development as a political priority, nor do they address specific policy proposals to link environmental justice to human development strategies. This book contends that human and environmental security should be framed in terms of transnational discussions rather than being limited to general international debates in order to examine both governance challenges and potential policy mechanisms that can effectively address environmental security issues that cross national boundaries. The chapters in this volume undertake an empirical examination of the relationships between human and environmental security, cross-border exchanges, and regional integration. They address the relationships between international norms, transnational human and environmental security issues, and the regionalization of governance in different parts of the world as the book includes comparative analyses as well as case studies from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The chapters originally published as a special issue in Globalizations.

Park concepts in Argentina are influenced by a wide range of different approaches from U.S.-American Park politics through French landscape architecture and Prussian sustainable forestry to international debates on nature conservation. While national parks are today regarded as hoards of wilderness, contemporary interpretation in the first half of the 20th century is quite more open. In Argentina, a position has prevailed that sees national parks as "real instruments of colonization." Agricultural colonization and the expulsion of indigenous peoples, broad programs of urbanization and touristification of landscape as well as the massive processes of biological colonization by salmon, roe deer and Douglas fir are integral elements of Argentine Park politics. Especially in the emblematic National Parks of Nahuel Huapi and Iguazú. In this context between conservation and colonization, the book explores the following question: How do national parks operate?
