Book excerpt: The first part of this booklet provides a brief introduction to the Namibian economy, apartheid society and the struggle for liberation. It is followed by a description of the North American corporations involved in the extraction of Namibia's wealth. The author, who is research director of The Africa Fund, examines the role played by these corporations in South Africa's war, and argues in the concluding section that the Reagan Administration policy bears major responsibility for the continued sufferings of the Namibian people. Book excerpt: Prepared by the US Bureau of Mines with the purpose of providing the latest available data and information on mining and mineral resources in Namibia, this is a well-informed and useful reference work. The study covers regional geology, the history of exploitation, mining policies and legislation, production (including detailed tables on production and reserves 1970-1981) as well as water resources, energy supply, labour and transport. It argues that uranium has the greatest potential for long-term growth, and that elsewhere a pattern of diminishing ore reserves in the metals and to a lesser extent diamonds suggests a declining resource base. Shortages of water supplies, lack of artisans and skilled labour and "the unresolved international dispute"are identified as constraints to future growth in Namibia's mining industry. There is a chapter outlining the main features of mining legislation, and a lengthy, mainly technical bibliography listing close to 200 items. As a technical and economic surveyrelying heavily on information provided by the mining companies themselves, the study has considerable value. As a guide to the political economy of Namibia, it is, however, quite misleading. The UN Decree No. 1 of 1974 is not mentioned at all, while two decades of worker organization, liberation struggle and harsh colonial repression are dismissed in the assertion that "differences among worker languages and interests have inhibited the formation of a uniform political party or union". The study is notably weak on labour and social conditions, wages and labour legislation. For up-to-date information along the same lines, see Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, vol. III: Area Reports: International, which contains a chapter on the mineral industry of Namibia. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

Book Synopsis Mining in Africa by : Bonnie Campbell
Download or read book Mining in Africa written by Bonnie Campbell and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continent of Africa is rich in minerals needed by Western economies, but rather than forming the basis for economic growth the mining industry contributes very little to African development Investigating the impact of the 2003 Extractive Industries Review on a number of African countries, the contributors find the root of the problem in the controls imposed on the African countries by the IMF and World Bank. They aim to convince academics, governments and industry that regulation needs to be reformed to create a mining industry favourable towards social, economic and environmental development. The book takes a multidisciplinary approach and provides a historical perspective of each country, making it ideal for students of development studies and development organizations.

Download or read book The Namibians written by and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 1985-06-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Trust Betrayed: There are few peoples who have suffered as long and as bitterly as the Namibians. For the past century they have been a minority people under the domination of an alien occupying power: first the Germans, and then the South African regime - itself an oppressor of its own majority people - who have illegally occupied Namibia for over 70 years. The Namibian people have been murdered, imprisoned and tortured, their country has been turned into a battleground for contending armies, their land and natural resources have been stolen and exploited. Yet Namibia has been on the international agenda for many years, first under a League of Nations mandate and later as a UN Trust Territory. It has been the subject of numerous resolutions from the UN and other international bodies, and yet no international political action has brought nearer any tangible moves towards true independence. Instead the South African government has procrastinated, manipulated and perverted any attempts to reach a peaceful, yet just, settlement. The Namibians, Minority Rights Group report 19, gives a detailed account of Namibian history and the present situation. Written by Peter Fraenkel and Roger Murray, it contains new sections on the international diplomacy which has surrounded the Namibian question, internal political developments, the war and human rights abuses. It focuses on evidence of the exploitation of Namibian land, resources and labour by outsiders. It reports also the continued resistance of Namibians to South African domination and their support for the liberation movement of SWAPO, and its allies, in that struggle. An invaluable guide to the complexities of a horrifying situation, The Namibians is essential reading for the media, academics, students, aid agencies and all interested in international affairs and current events.

Book Synopsis The Law of Energy Underground by : Donald N. Zillman
Download or read book The Law of Energy Underground written by Donald N. Zillman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While energy has been extracted from the ground for two centuries, recent years have seen transformative changes to how easy it is to access underground energy resources. This book investigates the key challenges and legal consequences of recent developments in the use of the subsurface as a source of energy. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the new technologies that have made this possible, such as the extraction of unconventional oil and gas resources through horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking. Further developments include the expanded use of geothermal energy, which has the potential to beome a major renewable energy source. The subsurface can also be utilised for long-term disposal or storage of environmentally harmful by-products of energy use, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), and disposal of spent nuclear fuel and other nuclear waste. Successful development of these technologies could enhance the use of fossil and nuclear energy by reducing the harm caused by the release of greenhouse gases and harmful radiation. The authors bring together a wide variety of expertise and knowledge to examine the legal implications of the development and control of these underground activities. They provide an invaluable understanding of the legal frameworks applicable to the extraction of underground energy, both at the international level and in a number of important national jurisdictions. Importantly, the book analyses the different regulatory responses to these developments across five continents, and assesses in detail the environmental impact of new energy extraction technologies.
