Book excerpt: Independence, Colonial Relics, and Monuments in the Caribbean is a collection of critical perspectives on independence and the legacies of colonialism in the post-colonial Caribbean. The contributors examine themes relating to culture, identity, gender, nationhood, heritage and historic preservation in the post-independent Caribbean. In a twenty-first century context where calls for reparatory justice for the people of the Caribbean who have been disadvantaged by the effects of colonialism have intensified, this book is quite relevant as some chapters examine colonialism through relics, laws, statues and monuments, while other chapters explore the implications of African enslavement, the role of Indian indentureship, the Federation of the West Indies and the effect of the American based Black Lives Movement on the Caribbean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get inside the head of Rihanna: musician, fashion designer, and business mogul. This collection of quotes has been curated from Rihanna’s numerous public statements—interviews, books, social media posts, television appearances, and more. It’s a comprehensive picture of a beloved icon and her impact on popular culture. Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty burst onto the American music scene in the mid-2000s when she released her single “Pon de Replay,” which hit number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. Her debut album sold more than 2 million copies worldwide, opening the door for her second album, A Girl Like Me, to go platinum. She continued to climb the music charts as she released her Good Girl Gone Bad album, featuring the hit track “Umbrella,” which earned her her first Grammy Award. She has gone on to become one of the most streamed artists of all time. As she gained global fame for her musical abilities, Rihanna also became known as a fashion leader. She earned a Fashion Icon lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and her 2015 Met Gala dress “broke the internet,” garnering a billion impressions on social media. In 2017, Rihanna launched her own makeup line, called Fenty Beauty, which she expanded in the years following into a line of lingerie, Savage X Fenty, and a luxury fashion line, Fenty. She has been praised for her dedication to inclusion both in terms of the diversity of skin tones represented in her makeup and lingerie lines, and for the variety of body types featured in promotion for her products. Her global impact extends beyond music and fashion—Rihanna has founded a number of foundations and charities to facilitate her philanthropic work. Her Believe Foundation is dedicated to assisting children with terminal illnesses and her Clara Lionel Foundation supports climate justice programs. She was one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2012 and 2018 and listed by Forbes as one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women of 2019. In 2021, Forbes identified her as the richest female musician in the world, and the second richest female entertainer in the world behind Oprah Winfrey. Rihanna has already established herself as a hit recording artist, business mogul, and global influencer, and she’s still at the relative outset of her career. Now, for the first time, you can find Rihanna’s most inspirational, thought-provoking quotes in one place, painting a comprehensive picture of this superstar’s impact on the world so far.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular references to the Rose Hall Great House in Jamaica often focus on the legend of the “White Witch of Rose Hall.” Over one hundred thousand people visit this plantation every year, many hoping to catch a glimpse of Annie Palmer’s ghost. After experiencing this tour with her daughter in 2013 and leaving Jamaica haunted by the silences of the tour, Celia E. Naylor resolved to write a history of Rose Hall about those people who actually had a right to haunt this place of terror and trauma—the enslaved. Naylor deftly guides us through a strikingly different Rose Hall. She introduces readers to the silences of the archives and unearths the names and experiences of the enslaved at Rose Hall in the decades immediately before the abolition of slavery in Jamaica. She then offers a careful reading of Herbert G. de Lisser’s 1929 novel, The White Witch of Rosehall—which gave rise to the myth of the “White Witch”—and a critical analysis of the current tours at Rose Hall Great House. Naylor’s interdisciplinary examination engages different modes of history making, history telling, and truth telling to excavate the lives of enslaved people, highlighting enslaved women as they navigated the violences of the Jamaican slavocracy and plantationscape. Moving beyond the legend, she examines iterations of the afterlives of slavery in the ongoing construction of slavery museums, memorializations, and movements for Black lives and the enduring case for Black humanity. Alongside her book, she has created a website as another way for readers to explore the truths of Rose Hall: rosehallproject.columbia.edu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An obsessive genealogist and descendent of one of the most prominent Jewish families since the American Revolution, Blanche Moses firmly believed her maternal ancestors were Sephardic grandees. Yet she found herself at a dead end when it came to her grandmother's maternal line. Using family heirlooms to unlock the mystery of Moses's ancestors, Once We Were Slaves overturns the reclusive heiress's assumptions about her family history to reveal that her grandmother and great-uncle, Sarah and Isaac Brandon, actually began their lives as poor Christian slaves in Barbados. Tracing the siblings' extraordinary journey throughout the Atlantic World, Leibman examines artifacts they left behind in Barbados, Suriname, London, Philadelphia, and, finally, New York, to show how Sarah and Isaac were able to transform themselves and their lives, becoming free, wealthy, Jewish, and--at times--white. While their affluence made them unusual, their story mirrors that of the largely forgotten population of mixed African and Jewish ancestry that constituted as much as ten percent of the Jewish communities in which the siblings lived, and sheds new light on the fluidity of race--as well as on the role of religion in racial shift--in the first half of the nineteenth century.
