Book excerpt: Adopting a 'social practice' approach to literacy research based on ethnographic methods, this book provides a strong critique of dominant understandings of the role of literacy in the lives of adults in Australia. It explores how groups of working-class adults can manage the literacy practices of their everyday lives by drawing on social networks of support. It is based on research conducted by the author over a forty-year career in adult literacy education, featuring the voices of varied adult groups, including: prisoners, the long-term unemployed, local council workers, manufacturing workers, adult literacy students, marginalised young people, vocational students, and patients living with a chronic illness (type 2 diabetes). Each chapter explains how dominant society views these adult groups in relation to literacy, and provides a qualitative examination at the local level of how members of these groups manage the literacy practices of their everyday lives.

Book excerpt: The National Foundation Skills Strategy for Adults provides a blueprint for action to develop the foundation skills of the Australian adult population. To raise the foundation skills of the Australian adult population, the Strategy identifies four priority areas for action. One of these is: Building the capacity of the education and training workforces to deliver foundation skills. This involves building the skills of specialist language, literacy and numeracy practitioners, developing the workforce to enable the effective teaching of employability skills and supporting vocational trainers to better integrate foundation skills with vocational training. This report describes the research undertaken to identify and qualify professional practice in the teaching of foundation skills. [Background, ed]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is an evaluation of the National Foundation Skills Strategy Project (NFSS Project). The Strategy commits all Australian Governments to action and provides a framework for existing policies, programs and initiatives to lift the foundation skills of adult Australians over the next decade. The target for the Strategy is that two thirds of working age Australians will have literacy and numeracy skills at Level 3 or above by 2022. The key elements of the NFSS Project were: research into professional practice in foundation skills; a foundation skills Community of Practice; a pilot project, the Foundation Skills Workplace Champions Network; a Review Framework to monitor progress against the aims of the Strategy; and a NFSS Project website and E-Newsletter. The NFSS Project operated between April 2014 and June 2015 and had a budget of approximately $700,000. This evaluation of the NFSS Project took place over 2014 and 2015. The methodology included a range of quantitative and qualitative techniques to understand and assess the outcomes of the project and its appropriateness and effectiveness. The key findings to emerge from the analysis reveal that the NFSS project was successful in achieving its overall aim of supporting the priority areas of the Strategy. [Executive summary, ed]

Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, an increasingly economistic discourse has dominated discussions about adult literacy and numeracy. This book provides critiques of, and alternative narratives to the dominant discourse. Authors provide tools and methodologies of critique, including ways of seeing how policies in the countries of focus come to be captured almost completely by the interests of business and industry, as well as how to critically interpret the data that policy makers use to justify their priorities. But adult literacy and numeracy practitioners and learners find spaces and places to pursue learning that matters for the lived experiences of adults and their communities. Beyond Economic Interests presents the struggles and achievements of practitioners and learners that lead the readers of the book to critically appreciate that a counter narrative to the purely economistic discourse of adult literacy and numeracy is much needed, and possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing Social Equity in Australian Adult Education: Lessons from the Past presents a case study of the trajectory of an Australian adult basic education program in New South Wales from its humanist, social justice beginnings, through forty years of destabilising change. It identifies the influences and influencers that have directed this change; those that were responsible for the creation of the field in its foundation years, and that were displaced by other, more powerful actors representing the global influence of the neoliberal ideology. The story is told largely through archival evidence and the voices of those practitioners who helped shape the discourse and practice of the foundation years, and who were required to respond to constantly changing policies and socio-economic contexts. It discusses some lessons that might be learnt from the past in order that a new set of actors might be mobilised to promote an alternate discourse. This book will appeal to students and scholars of social justice and adult education, and practitioners involved in adult education.
