Book excerpt: Hilltown Dam is owned by the Neshaminy Water Resources Authority and maintained by Bucks County. The dam and reservoir are used as a flood control structure for the downstream town of Chalfont, Pennsylvania. The impoundment was designed by the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, in 1977, and the structure was officially completed in 1980. The dam and its appurtenant facilities are considered to be in good condition. The dam is classified as an 'Intermediate' size structure with a 'High' hazard classification, consistent with its potential in the event of failure for extensive property damage and loss of life downstream of the dam and in Chalfont, Pennsylvania.

Book excerpt: Warrington Dam is a 45 foot high zoned earth embankment, 1,600 feet long, with an emergency spillway at each end of the embankment. The embankment contains an impervious core constructed over a cutoff trench under the dam centerline. The core and cutoff trench are composed of materials classified as silty clays and clayey silts (Zone 1) and encompassed by less permeable materials classified as silty gravels (Zone 2). The upstream slope is 3H:1V with a 10 foot berm at approximately elevation 241.5, normal pool level. The downstream slope is 2.5H:1V with a 12 foot wide berm that serves as an access road along the downstream face of the embankment. The impervious Zone 1 core upstream slope is 2H:1V and the downstream slope is 1.5H:1V. The 14 foot wide embankment crest is at a design elevation of 272.9. Both upstream and downstream slopes are protected with grass. Embankment seepage is controlled by a drain trench near the downstream toe, which contains a 12-inch perforated drain pipe which discharges through the impact basin at the downstream toe.

Book excerpt: Railroad Creek Dam is a 34-foot-high zoned earth embankment about 1,170 feet long with an emergency spillway at the left end of the embankment. The embankment contains an impervious core constructed over a cutoff trench under the dam centerline. The principal spillway consists of a concrete drop inlet riser, 202 feet of 30 inch diameter reinforced concrete, steel cylinder pressure pipe, with seven anti-seep collars and an impact basin at the downstream toe. The reservoir drain is located at the base of the riser. Because of high pressure gas lines which cross the reservoir area, the pond drain gate is not closed and water is not normally impounded behind the dam. The emergency spillway is a trapezoidal channel excavated around the left end of the embankment. The dam and its appurtenant facilities are considered to be in good condition. Calculations indicate that the existing spillway systems are capable of passing the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping. Therefore, the spillway system is considered to be adequate.

Book excerpt: Newtown Dam is owned by the Neshaminy Water Resources Authority and maintained by Bucks County. The dam and reservoir are used as a flood control structure for the downstream town of Newtown, Pennsylvania. The impoundment was designed by the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, in 1976-77 and the structure was officially completed in 1980. In accordance with criteria established by Federal (OCE) Guidelines, the recommended spillway design flood for this 'Intermediate' size dam and 'High' hazard classification is the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The Soil Conservation Service designed this dam as a Class C structure, which requires that the spillway systems be designed to pass the PMF. The hydrologic and hydraulic computations presented in Appendix D indicate that the spillway structures are capable of discharging the PMF without overtopping the embankment. Therefore, the structure is considered to have an 'Adequate' spillway system.

Book excerpt: Pine Run Dam is a homogeneous embankment with an impervious cutoff trench beneath the centerline of the embankment. The dam is approximately 2,700 feet long and the height, measured from the stream bed to the crest, is 31.8 feet. Embankment fill was obtained from emergency spillway excavation and borrow areas within the reservoir. Zone I materials used in the cutoff trench are classified as low plastic silts, and Zone 2 materials are slightly less plastic but still classified as low plastic silts. The embankment internal drainage system discharges through the sidewalls of Saint Anthony's Falls (SAF) stilling basin at the downstream toe. The upstream slope is 3H:1V and the downstream slope is 2.5H:1V. The crest is 14 feet wide at elevation 287.8. The upstream slope has a 15 foot wide berm at approximately elevation 265, the normal sediment pool level.

Book excerpt: Oxford Valley Mall Dam is a homogeneous earth embankment about 1,200 feet long. The height, measured from the top of the embankment to the toe of the impervious fill, is about 27 feet. However, fill extending from the embankment to U.S. Route 1, a distance of about 850 feet, has reduced the apparent height of the embankment to about 13 feet. The eight acre reservoir was formed by excavation to the elevation of the reservoir drain inlet. The spillway consists of an octagonal reinforced concrete intake tower, 851 feet of an eight foot wide by eight foot high conduit and a transition section at the outlet. The dam and reservoir are used to control storm water runoff from the adjacent Oxford Valley Mall. The dam and its appurtenant facilities are considered to be in generally good condition. Calculations indicate that the existing spillway system discharges about 46 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping. It is assessed that the embankment would probably withstand overtopping for a limited period. Therefore, the spillway system of this structure is considered to be inadequate but not seriously inadequate.

Book excerpt: This flood control dam consists of a 1000-foot-long earthfill embankment with a maximum height of 25 feet. Seven hundred fifty feet of the embankment crosses the valley, the other 250 feet ties the embankment to higher ground in the left abutment. The principal spillway is a drop inlet structure with an orifice opening and discharges through a 30-inch diameter pipe. This spillway is designed to handle a 100 year flood. For any larger floods the emergency spillway is required. This grassed earth spillway is located in the right abutment and has its design crest elevation 4.6 feet below the top of embankment. The emergency spillway has a channel bottom width of about 60 feet. Based on the visual inspection, past performance and the available engineering data, the dam and its appurtenant structures appear to be in good condition. The spillway capacity is adequate to pass the PMF peak inflow without overtopping the dam.

Book excerpt: Solebury Farm Dam is located on Honey Hollow Creek in Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. At the time of the inspection, the water surface was approximately one inch above the spillway crest. The overall appearance of the dam is fair, although the thick overgrowth on the dam made a complete visual assessment difficult. The alignment of the upstream embankment face appears to be good. Although no slope protection exists, no distressed areas were noted. The vertical alignment of the top of the dam varies approximately one foot over the 150 foot length of the dam with the design top of the dam being the low point. The downstream embankment face appears to be uniform. No areas of slope failure were noted. Seepage estimated at 2 gpm was evident about 10 feet from the toe of the dam and 20 feet from the spillway outlet channel. The seepage appeared to be clear at the time of the inspection. The entire embankment is overgrown with trees and brush. Trunk diameters range up to 12 inches with heights approaching 30 feet. The spillway is excavated into bedrock which appears to be resistant to weathering. No areas of scour or rock deterioration were observed.

Book excerpt: Warrington Township Retention Basin Dam was built to control storm runoff resulting from upstream residential development. Visual inspection and review of design and construction documentation indicate that the dam and appurtenant structures of Warrington Township Retention Basin Dam are in generally good condition. In accordance with criteria established by Federal (OCE) Guidelines, the spillway design flood for this 'Small' size dam and 'Significant hazard classification is the 100 Year Flood to one-half the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Because of the dam's low height and small total capacity, the selected spillway design flood is the 100 year event. Hydrologic and hydraulic computations presented in Appendix D indicate that the spillways are capable of passing the 100 year event without overtopping the embankment under design conditions. Under existing conditions, the spillway capacity is estimated to be overtopped by about 0.2 feet. The spillway system of this structure is considered to be 'Inadequate' under assumed existing conditions.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is prepared under guidance contained in the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams for Phase I Investigations. The purpose of a Phase I investigation is to expeditiously identify those dams which may pose hazards to human life or property. The assessment of the general condition of the dam is based upon available data and visual inspections. Detailed investigations, testing and detailed computational evaluations are beyond the scope of a Phase I investigation; however, the investigation is intended to identify the need for more detailed studies. In reviewing this report, it should be realized that the reported condition of the dam is based on observations of field conditions at the time of inspection along with data available to the inspection team. In cases where the reservoir was lowered or drained prior to inspection, such action, while improving the stability and safety of the dam, removes the normal load on the structure and may obscure certain conditions which might otherwise be detectable if inspected under the normal operating environment of the structure.
