Book Synopsis Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on The role of forests for future global development by : Lutz Fehrmann
Download or read book Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on The role of forests for future global development written by Lutz Fehrmann and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainable management of forest resources became an indispensable prerequisite for any policy addressing the actual and future challenges of globabl development. Forests and other tree resources are essential for the provision of ecosystem services and contribute largely to future food security, livelihoods and ecosystem stability. Forests and any other trees outside the forest play a relevant role all three great UN conventions (on Climate Change, on Biodiversity, and on Combatting Desertification). The policy processes to implement the measures in these conventions on sub-national, national, regional and international level are extremely complex. This complexity comes, among other factors, from a blend of different sectoral and national interests, from a large number of scientifically not yet entirely resolved issues and a wide range of different biophysical, social, cultural and political conditions all over the world.

Book Synopsis Local Forest Management by : David Stuart Edmunds
Download or read book Local Forest Management written by David Stuart Edmunds and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A well written book, astutely organized.' Development and Change Local Forest Management is built around careful and illuminating case studies of the effects of devolution policies on the management of forests in several Asian countries. The studies demonstrate that devolution policies - contrary to the claims of governments - actually increased governmental control over the management of local resources and did so at lower cost. The controversial findings show that if local forest users are to exercise genuine control over forest management, they must be better represented in the processes of forming, implementing and evaluating devolution policies. In addition, the guiding principle for policy discussions should be to create sustainable livelihoods for local resource users, especially the poorest among them, rather than reducing the cost of government forest administration. This book is essential reading for forest and other natural resource managers, policy makers, development economists and forestry professionals and researchers.

Book Synopsis The Anthropology of Africa: Challenges for the 21st Century by : Nchoji Nkwi

This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999 (August 30 September 2) the Pan African Anthropological Association (PAAA) marked the 10th anniversary of its creation by holding its 9th Annual Conference in Yaounde, Cameroon the city and country of its birth. The conference, themed The Anthropology of Africa: Challenges for the 21st Century, was attended by some seventy participants, mostly African. Among the international participants was Dr Sydel Silverman, President of the Wenner Gren Foundation at the time a long term partner of the PAAA; she was present at the inaugural conference in 1988. The conference proceedings were initially published in 2000 with very limited circulation. Given the continued relevance of the papers presented, and in view of the call by the President of the PAAA for African anthropologists to reunite anthropological theory and practice in the teaching programmes of African universities, the PAAA is pleased to republish the proceedings of its landmark 9th Annual Conference. The book consists of forty three chapters divided into eight parts, namely: i) teaching anthropology in the decades ahead; ii) Health Challenges: HIV/AIDS Anthropological Perspectives; iii) NGOS: Use and Misuse of Anthropology; iv) Anthropological Focus on Environment; v) Some Applied Issues in Anthropology; vi) The African Family in Crisis; vii) Ethnicity and Ethnic Conflicts; and viii) Population issues and anthropology: Fertility Crisis. Paul Nkwi concludes his introduction to the volume with these words: The Anthropology of Africa will remain for a long time, fundamentally applied if it is to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
