Book Synopsis Tackling Obesity in England by : Great Britain. National Audit Office
Download or read book Tackling Obesity in England written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 2001 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Britain, between 1980 and 1998, the number of people classified as obese tripled to 21per cent of women and 17 per cent of men. It is estimated that this costs the economy, as a whole, 2 billion and the NHS 0.5 billion in treatment. However the response of the NHS is patchy, with no national guidelines and only 28% of health authorities taking action to address the problem. There is little activity related to the management of obesity outside of general practice but only a small proportion of GPs follow a protocol. This report recommends that there should be strategies to reduce obesity and that the Department of Health should build on the plan in the National Service Framework on coronary heart disease and work with partners and professional bodies to clarify responsibilities. It should also work with the National Institute of Clinical excellence to disseminate information. The Department of Health should also lead a cross government strategy to promote the benefits of physical activity and there should be local targets to encourage cycling and walking. It should also work with the food industry to improve the balance of diet. Much of this work needs to be aimed at school children to promote a healthy lifestyle throughout life and guidance to schools on commercial sponsorship should be strengthened so that there is no conflict with messages on healthy eating.

Book excerpt: The Government's energy policy has four key objectives: protecting the environment and addressing climate change issues, including cutting carbon dioxide emissions levels; energy security; delivering affordable energy; and promoting competitive energy markets. The Government has set a target of securing 10 per cent of Britain's electricity supply from renewable sources by 2010, and aims to double this level by 2020. Following on from an NAO report (HCP 210, session 2004-05, ISBN 0102932204) published in February 2005, the Committee's report examines the contribution of renewables to the UK's energy and environmental objectives, the cost of the Renewables Obligation for consumers, and the challenges of delivering the 2010 target.

Book Synopsis Holding Government to Account by : Henry C Midgley
Download or read book Holding Government to Account written by Henry C Midgley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-12-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Audit Office has played an important role in the checks and balances of the UK parliamentary and political system over the last 40 years. This new book, more than just a history of the UK’s supreme audit institution, examines the very definition of accountability through both an historic and an academic lens, critically exploring questions about the role of audit in a democracy and how well it is working. Holding Government to Account draws on several unique sources of evidence, including interviews with senior officials from the National Audit Office and the civil service, as well as senior parliamentarians with experience of the NAO’s relationships with government and legislature. These interviews are supplemented by an analysis of previously unpublished manuscript material in the National Archives, examination of NAO reports and parliamentary and other reports focused on accountability. The book begins with a history of the National Audit Office in the context of the UK’s wider history. It then offers an overview of the constitutional, political and human legacies of the Exchequer and Audit Department, followed by a close examination of the National Audit Office’s leadership and decision-making from inception in 1984 through to the present. The authors conclude with an exploration of the way in which the meaning of public sector audit has evolved over time, in accordance with its wider political, ideological and material context. In doing so, they demonstrate that any question about the National Audit Office’s future and organisation is really a question about what democracy and good government mean in a modern bureaucratic state. Holding Government to Account will be of keen interest to students enrolled in courses on accounting, public administration, law and politics as well as to politicians, civil servants and Supreme Audit Institutions internationally.

Book Synopsis Assurance for major projects by : Great Britain: National Audit Office
Download or read book Assurance for major projects written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This National Audit Office report is on assurance for major government projects, such as the introduction of large IT systems, the construction of ships and helicopters and major changes to how services are delivered. There are 205 projects in the Government Major Project Portfolio, with a combined whole-life cost of £376 billion, and annual cost of £14.6 billion. Thirty nine of those projects have a delivery confidence rating of 'red' or 'amber/red'. The report supports the changes that government has made to the central assurance system for such projects - in particular, the launch of the Major Projects Authority - and finds that they have resulted in some significant impacts. However, the system is not yet 'built to last'. Processes need to be formalised, and the Authority, HM Treasury and departments need to co-operate more if these improvements are to continue. Transparent reporting of project data would also create a more effective and enduring system. An effective central system that gives assurance over project progress is critical for ensuring successful outcomes. Capacity constraints have had an impact on the effectiveness of the assurance system. The Authority is reporting on 160 more projects as part of the portfolio and carrying out more in-depth assurance work, but has 40 per cent fewer staff than the body it replaced. As a result, processes for sharing project lessons and for continuously improving the system remain informal, and there is overdependence on key individuals in the system.

Download or read book Meeting the energy challenge written by Great Britain: Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-01-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The May 2007 White Paper "Meeting the energy challenge: a white paper on energy" (Cm. 7124, ISBN 9780101712422) set out the Government's international and domestic strategy to address the two main challenges: tackling climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions; and ensuring clean and affordable energy as the country becomes increasingly dependent on imported fuel. An online consultation on nuclear power and the role of the private sector: www.direct.gov.uk/nuclearpower2007 was produced at the same time. This White Paper sets out the Government's decision taken in response to the consultation. The Government believes it is in the public interest that new nuclear power stations should have a role to play in the country's future energy mix alongside other low-carbon sources; that energy companies should have the option of investing in them; and that the Government should take active steps to open up the way to the construction of new nuclear power stations. It will be for the energy companies to fund, develop and build the new stations, including meeting the full costs of decommissioning and their full share of waste management costs. Section 1 summarises the consultation process. Section 2 addresses the key issues that arose from the consultation and how they have been taken into account in shaping policy and reaching conclusions. Section 3 outlines the facilitative actions the Government will take to reduce the regulatory and planning risks associated with investing in new nuclear power stations. Finally there are three annexes: alternatives to nuclear power; justification and strategic siting assessment processes; regulatory and advisory structure for nuclear power.

Book Synopsis Refining Regulatory Regimes by : David Coen
Download or read book Refining Regulatory Regimes written by David Coen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With regulation seeking to foster competition at the same time as also having to protect essential services, the authors investigate regulatory styles, costs of new regulatory functions and how firms in the new regulatory landscape access and influence regulatory authorities. The authors consider how EU pressures may hinder or help the functioning of new regulatory markets and the establishment of business-regulator relationships, as well as the broader policy implications for these new regulatory environments. The book also determines how regulatory authorities emerge and evolve under different state traditions and assesses, over time, the degree to which there is potential for convergence, divergence and continued differences as regulatory functions mature.

Book Synopsis Improving Motor Carrier Safety Measurement by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Improving Motor Carrier Safety Measurement written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year roughly 100,000 fatal and injury crashes occur in the United States involving large trucks and buses. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in the U.S. Department of Transportation works to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. FMCSA uses information that is collected on the frequency of approximately 900 different violations of safety regulations discovered during (mainly) roadside inspections to assess motor carriers' compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, as well as to evaluate their compliance in comparison with their peers. Through use of this information, FMCSA's Safety Measurement System (SMS) identifies carriers to receive its available interventions in order to reduce the risk of crashes across all carriers. Improving Motor Carrier Safety Measurement examines the effectiveness of the use of the percentile ranks produced by SMS for identifying high-risk carriers, and if not, what alternatives might be preferred. In addition, this report evaluates the accuracy and sufficiency of the data used by SMS, to assess whether other approaches to identifying unsafe carriers would identify high-risk carriers more effectively, and to reflect on how members of the public use the SMS and what effect making the SMS information public has had on reducing crashes.
