Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22 It;will be seen, in the course of the Narrative as well as in the Appendix, how much reason I had to. Be satisfied with, and how great my obligations are to, all the Gentlemen who were associated with me 'in the Expedition, whose kindness, good conduct, and cordial, co-operation, have made an impression which can never be effaced from my mind. The unfortunate death of Mr. Hood is the only drawback which I feel from the otherwise unalloyed pleasure I derived from reflecting on that cordial unanimity which at all times prevailed among us in the days of sunshine, and in those of sickness and sorrow. Book excerpt: Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the years 1819-20-21-22, Volume 2 by John Franklin Excerpt I"Le Brave Belge!" The rush from Monterey, in Mexico, when a telegram said that general European war was inevitable; the run and jump on board the Lusitania at New York the night that war was declared by England against Germany; the Atlantic passage on the liner of ineffaceable memory, a suspense broken by fragments of war news by wireless; the arrival in England before the war was a week old; the journey to Belgium in the hope of reaching the scene of action!-as I write, all seem to have the perspective of history, so final are the processes of war, so swift their execution, and so eager is everyone for each day's developments. As one grows older the years seem shorter; but the first year of the Great War is the longest year most of us have ever known. Book excerpt: -- Presents a new edition of Franklin's classic first-person account of his tragic 1819-22 Arctic expedition, illustrated with more than thirty photographs and drawings John Franklin's three-year sojourn in the wilderness succeeded in mapping part of the Arctic coast but ended in disaster. As supplies ran out, starvation and scurvy set in. More than half of the team members died as they huddled in winter quarters with lichens scraped off rocks, bones, scraps of hide, and their own boots as their only food. One voyager went insane and was executed on suspicion of murder and cannibalism. Sumptuously illustrated and poignantly written, Journey to the Polar Sea is a classic tale of exploration and high drama.

Book excerpt: Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the years 1819-20-21-22, Volume 2 by John Franklin CHAPTER VIII. - 1820.September. During our little expedition to the Copper-Mine River, Mr. Wentzel had made great progress in the erection of our winter-house, having nearly roofed it in. But before proceeding to give an account of a ten months' residence at this place, henceforth designated Fort Enterprise, I may premise, that I shall omit many of the ordinary occurrences of a North American winter, as they have been already detailed in so able and interesting a manner by Ellis, and confine myself principally to the circumstances which had an influence on our progress in the ensuing summer. The observations on the magnetic needle, the temperature of the atmosphere, the Aurora Borealis, and other meteorological phenomena, together with the mineralogical and botanical notices, being less interesting to the general reader, are omitted in this edition. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly edition presents for the first time all of the known surviving letters of British novelist Sarah Harriet Burney (1772-1884). The overwhelming majority of these letters--more than ninety percent--have never before been published. Burney's accomplishments, says Lorna J. Clark, have been unjustly overlooked. She published five works of fiction between 1796 and 1839, all of which met with reasonable success, including Traits of Nature (1812), which sold out within three months. These letters position Burney among her fellow women writers and shed light on her relations with her publisher and her ambivalence toward her own work and her readership. Her lively observation of the literary scene evinces the range and scope of her reading, as well as her awareness of literary trends and developments. Burney was, for example, remarkably prescient in recognizing, and praising from the first, the talent of Jane Austen, and met several of the authors of her day. A challenging new perspective on family matters also emerges in the letters. The youngest child of the second marriage of Charles Burney, and the only daughter to remain unmarried, Sarah Harriet had the unenviable task of caring for her father in his later years. Her letters reveal a darker side of Dr. Burney, and also help to round out our image of a more favored daughter, Sarah Harriet's half-sister (and fellow novelist), Frances Burney. As literature, Clark observes, Burney's letters are, arguably, her best work. Thoroughly versed in the epistolary arts, she sought always to amuse and entertain her correspondents. Burney ultimately emerges as a quiet but heroic single woman, relegated to the margins of society where she struggled for independence and self-respect. Displaying literary qualities and a lively sense of humor, the letters provide a fascinating insight into the literary, political, and social life of the day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North of the sixtieth parallel, east of Great Slave Lake, and west of Hudson Bay is a vast sweep of pure, unspoiled land. It is the least accessible region in North America, a wilderness that has been seen by few and traversed by fewer still, and is inhabited by no one. There is only the land, carved and molded by the glaciers: scoured boulders, ridges and low hills of white sand, the sparkling waters of myriad lakes. In 1964 Peter Browning and John Blunt went by canoe from northern Saskatchewan to the village of Snowdrift on Great Slave Lake. They started in early June, and traveled 600 miles on lakes and rivers and across agonizing portages through a land devoid of other people. They saw no one else for 74 days. During their long journey they suffered storms, hordes of insects, exhausting labor and hunger. They were rewarded by being totally independent amidst the beauty and serenity of the last great wilderness in North America. Included in this modern odyssey are 59 striking photographs of the virgin lakes and forests and tundra of the Northwest Territories. -- back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian national identity is bound to the idea of a Great White North. Images of snow, wilderness, and emptiness seem innocent, yet this path-breaking volume shows they contain the seeds of contemporary racism. Rethinking the Great White North moves the idea of whiteness to the centre of debates about Canadian history, geography, and identity. Informed by critical race theory and the insight that racism is geographical as well as historical and cultural, the contributors trace how notions of race, whiteness, and nature helped shape Canada’s identity as a white country in travel writing and treaty making; scientific research and park planning; and within small towns, cities, and tourist centres. These nuanced explorations of diverse historical geographies of nature not only revisit the past: they offer a new vocabulary for contemporary debates on Canada’s role in the North and the nature of multiculturalism.
