Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleon as a General, Vol. 2 The favourable reception given to my bold attempt to criticize Napoleon's strategical conceptions has served as a stimulus to me to complete the second part, which was indeed already far advanced despite of many difficulties which had to be encountered. I hope the reading public may give the same reception to this, the concluding portion. For the early appearance of the volume my thanks are due to Lieutenant v. Kameke, of the Emperor Alexander's Grenadier Guard Regiment, who has taken the trouble to draw the map of the Russian theatre of war. I must repeat with regard to this part what I said with regard to the first. I have in no way tried to write an exact and complete history of the Napoleonic campaigns, but have confined myself to a consideration of the points which were necessary to form a proper judgment on the French General. In the first volume I endeavoured to follow the course of the rising star of the General and to admire its constantly increasing brilliance. In the second I try to describe its path and show the inherent weaknesses which led to its decline from the zenith. If in the first portion I seem to have yielded too much to the aspirations of the poet who said, "I love the man who strives beyond his might," I trust in the second I have not been oblivious of the warnings of the same writer: The man you choose is various and great, His deeds will serve you long for much reflection; Yet strive to learn from his untoward fate He is not fitted as a model for selection. He was entrusted with several missions abroad after this campaign, and his post as Secretary to the Cabinet remained as unoccupied as the second post. The assistance which it had been the Emperor's intention to give me was accordingly only an illusory one. Another year passed without any change being made in the work in the cabinet. I repeated my application to Napoleon to obtain an assistant. What I needed above all was to be relieved of the care of the papers which had to be classified after having been answered. The multiplicity of my occupations prevented me from keeping these papers in sufficiently good order to be able to find any draft of a letter or a despatch which the Emperor might want to see at a moment's notice. Napoleon avoided satisfying my request for some time longer, either by making promises which he did not keep, or on various pretexts. He used to urge me to get married, assuring me that he would arrange my work in such a manner that I should get some rest. Various matches were proposed to me by him and the Empress Josephine, including a lady who was one of her relations, and whom she obliged me to call upon at her house. But at that time I did not feel any vocation for marriage. Besides, I was determined that if I ever did make up my mind to get married I would choose my own wife. But the Directory had no such thoughts in their head, and persisted, in spite of the experience of the last campaign, either from narrowness of mind or a mean jealousy, in keeping the armies separate.
