Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most everyone who comes to western North Carolina has heard of the Nantahala, but few know its history. Long before it was a mecca for rafters and thrill seekers, it was traveled by naturalists and explorers from William Bartram to John C. Frémont. After the Cherokees were driven out, settlers arrived and began exporting the wealth of the mountains in the form of timber, talc and minerals. Tourists arrived on the Western Turnpike soon after, and the railroad brought more around 1890. The federal government began purchasing land for the new Nantahala National Forest, and the need for aluminum to fight World War II precipitated the construction of Fontana Lake and Nantahala Lake. Local author Lance Holland has crafted an enlightening and entertaining narrative history of this unique region.

This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eastern United States is wrought with tailwater fisheries that can produce monster trout, but anglers need the wheres, whens and hows in order to capitalize. In the newest Flyfisher's Guide, Tom Gilmore gives you everything you need to know to hook into the East's trophy tailwater trout. Other guidebooks have inconsistent writing and photography, with vague maps. Gilmore gives you everything you need to know, along with spectacular full-color photography. Regulations, seasons, fish, river characteristics, expert insights, recommended gear, hub-city information, history, and complete directions are listed for every river. Gilmore also details what makes a tailwater a tailwater, and offers specific advice on how to approach them. Fish, flies and hatches are broken down, along with tips on how to read the water, flow and release schedules, seasonal variations, appropriate gear and more. This book keeps up Wilderness Adventures Press' tradition of producing superior maps with GPS coordinates for all access points, boat ramps, campgrounds and more. The Upper Connecticut, Deerfield, Housatonic, Delaware, Gunpowder, Jackson, South Holston, Watauga, Tuckasegee, Chattahoochee and many more rivers are covered in full detail. Authors Ed Jaworowski's and Beau Beasley's endorsements validate this offering as the authoritative guide on fishing eastern tailwaters. Start catching more and bigger fish with this guidebook from Wilderness Adventures Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author and naturalist Marci Spencer reveals the history and splendor of the Nantahala National Forest. The 500,000-acre Nantahala National Forest dominates the rugged southwestern corner of North Carolina. Rivers such as the Cheoah, Cullasaja, and Tuckasegee carve deep gorges, making the region one of the wettest in the nation. The Whitewater River tumbles over the highest waterfall in the eastern United States. Power companies dammed local rivers, creating some of North Carolina's most scenic recreational mountain lakes. The high peaks, secluded coves and forested woodlands of the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Panthertown Valley and Buck Creek Serpentine Pine Barrens and other areas hold cultural and natural history secrets.

Book excerpt: The Unicoi Mountains straddle the Tennessee-North Carolina state line just south of the Great Smoky Mountains, separated from the latter mountains only by the Little Tennessee River. Extending from the Little Tennessee River southward to the Hiwassee River, the Unicois are a southern segment of the high Unaka ridge that forms the western escarpment of the southern Appalachians. The Snowbird Mountains are included with the Unicois because they are connected like a spur ridge to the Unicois. The Unicois have been isolated and difficult to access until the completion in 1996 of the forty-two-mile-long, superbly scenic Cherohala Skyway that courses along the highest ridges of the Unicois at elevations up to 5,390 feet and provides outstanding views of forested mountains. The Unicoi Mountains have been relatively undisturbed by human development since most of the land is publicly owned and managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The Unicois harbor many diverse natural treasures that are hidden from the casual observer. Along with his personal observations, the author describes and synthesizes the results of scientific research on the natural assets of the Unicois, including intensive surveys of plants and animals in certain areas, the results of which have often been reported only in places where the general public cannot easily access them. The authors purpose in writing the book is to share with others what he has learned about the special natural features (landscape, geology, climate, flora, fungi, and fauna) of the Unicois and their historical rootswith the hope of inspiring others to enjoy, cherish, and conserve them. Unicoi Unity also reviews the history of the effects of humans on the Unicoi ecosystem and anticipates future challenges.
