Book excerpt: On the role of performance and audience in Nam June Paik's trailblazing media art This publication focuses on a feature of media artist Nam June Paik's (1932-2006) oeuvre that has been largely overlooked: the live dimension of his work, a consistent element running through his artistic career. The experience of the audience and their active involvement were crucial components in Paik's work. Starting with his early career as a composer, one focus of the book is on the way Paik approaches music as a score, a concept and an event. His artistic ideas and methods are presented with reference to key series of works--including his performances, his participatory pieces, his interest in live television and his multimedia works. This richly illustrated chronicle of his performances gives a vivid portrait of these live encounters. Specially designed pages created by the artists Annika Kahrs, Autumn Knight, Aki Onda and Samson Young underscore the relevance of Paik's work today.

Book excerpt: Considered to be the founder of video art, Nam June Paik (1932- 2006) was a visionary artist who foresaw the importance of mass media and new technology, and its impact on visual culture. His cutting-edge, innovative, yet playfully entertaining work continues to be a major influence on art and culture to this day. This ground-breaking publication focuses on Paik's pivotal role in the cross-germination of radical aesthetics and experimental practices, emphasising his visionary insight and his pioneering role in the emergence and proliferation of performative and collaborative art practice. Bringing together works that span a fivedecade career, and including archival materials and excerpts of Paik's own writings, this book offers an in-depth understanding of the artist's innovative practice and his vision of a multidisciplinary future. His ideas such as 'Eurasia' and 'Electronic Superhighway', and his profound insight into a global age will be analysed in the context of transnationalism for the first time. In addition, texts will elaborate upon Paik's collaborations with other artists, musicians and choreographers, such as Charlotte Moorman, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Joseph Beuys and Fluxus, highlighting Paik's global trajectory and considerable impact on digital culture, which connect his art to a new generation.

Book excerpt: Explore the ground-breaking work of 20th-century, avant-garde artist Nam June Paik, the pioneer of video art, and discover his impact on the digital age. Nam June Paik was one of the most presciently visionary artists of his generation, one who foresaw the ascendance of the screen in modern life, coined the phrase "electronic superhighway", and celebrated these developments with a humor and whimsy that counteracts some of the darker aspects of our technological age. This book features works from throughout Paik's five-decade career--from robots made from old TV screens to stills from his innovative video works and views of his renowned room-sized installations. Archival materials and excerpts of Paik's own writings offer a deeper understanding of the artist's extraordinary collaborative career. He had exchanges with avant-garde artists, musicians, and choreographers, including Charlotte Moorman, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Joseph Beuys, and members of the Fluxus movement. Essays explore how Paik influenced a global network of artists and pioneered a radical and cutting-edge art practice. They also consider how Paik's transnational approach to art presaged today's issues around borders, immigration, cultural appropriation, and nationalism. By envisioning a future that has become a reality, Paik's work--and its humanity, scope, and optimism--is perhaps more important than ever. Published with Tate

Electronic Television at the legendary Galerie Parnass in Wuppertal, Germany, the young Nam June Paik literally created a new genre of exhibition. The visitors, who were greeted in front of the entrance with a freshly slaughtered ox head, were not only confronted with the newness of the electronic image, but also found themselves integrated into a Dadaist scenario staged with prepared pianos, mechanical sound objects along with record players and audio tape installations. Together with documents, photographs and the works of Paik, this catalogue recreates scenes from the original show, letting the works again come to life in their original context. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Nam June Paik: Music for All Senses at Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, February ndash; May 2009. English and German text.

---- This is Not a Love Song: Video Art and Pop Music Crossovers exhibition catalogue traces the genealogy of the relations between video art and pop music from the 1960s to today in which video art and pop music crossed roads. The catalogue features a substantial essay on video art and pop music relationship by curator F. Javier Panera Cuevas. The five chapters in the catalogue Art in Pop, Pop in Art, Hysteria and Religion, ‘Non-Musicians’ vs ‘Non-Artists’ Rock and Conceptual Art, Rock and Its Double: Pop Music as a ‘Toolbox’ and Dance Music Politics present a deeper look into the works in the exhibition. This is Not a Love Song suggests that the relations between music and the visual arts force us to reconsider another history of art, in which musicians and artists can position themselves either as actors in the hegemonic cultural system or as critical radicals whose traces, as Greil Marcus would say, can be as intense and as short-lived 'as a lipstick stain that is removed but leaves a profound imprint on our memory.

Book excerpt: The Explicit Material gathers varied perspectives from the discourses of conservation, curation and humanities disciplines to focus on aspects of heritage transmission and material transitions. The authors observe and explicate the myriad transformations that works of different kinds - manuscripts, archaeological artefacts, video art, installations, performances, film, and built heritage - may undergo: changing contexts, changing matter, changing interpretations and display. Focusing on the vibrant materiality of artworks and artefacts, The Explicit Material puts an emphasis on objects as complex constructs of material relations. By so doing, it announces a shift in sensibilities and understandings of the significance of objects and the materials they are made of, and on the increasingly blurred boundaries between the practices of conservation and curation.

Book excerpt: How do works of art endure over time despite their material and conceptual alteration? How do decay, technological obsolescence and remediation affect what the artwork is and what it may become? How might the observation of change in artworks teach us something about their nature and behavior? How do changeable artworks induce a rethinking of those museological paradigms that assume fixity and stasis? The intellectual aim of this project is to come up with answers to these questions. "Revisions Zen for Film" which is accompanied by an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center on display from September 18, 2015 January 10, 2016 focuses on "Zen for Film" (also known as Fluxfilm no.1), one of the most evocative film works created by the Korean-American artist, Nam June Paik in 1962-64. Rather than being a compilation of objects presented for inspection in support of a curatorial argument, this project zooms into the microcosm of a singular artwork in order to unfold some of the inspirations, transitions, remediations, and residues that have occurred in the course of that artwork s existence. It also seeks to examine how the firsthand awareness of materiality enhances visual knowledge. "Revisions Zen for Film" strives to revise standard notions about an artwork that has undergone a rich history of display. The project reveals what often remains undisclosed an artwork that is a complex sum of its transitions rather than a product of the visual analysis and interpretation of that thing as a static entity. The project undermines any assumption that the artwork is unchanging, and hence subject to a single interpretation. "Zen for Film Revisions" aims to explore the significance of the artwork in its constant transitions, proposing a new art historical narrative. By putting "Zen for Film" on display and inviting an interdisciplinary dialogue, it asks precisely what and when the artwork might be. "

Book excerpt: The diary and essays of Brian Eno republished twenty-five years on with a new introduction by the artist in a beautiful hardback edition.'One of the seminal books about music . . . an invaluable insight into the mind and working practices of one of the industry's undeniable geniuses.'GUARDIANAt the end of 1994, Brian Eno resolved to keep a diary. His plans to go to the cinema, theatre and galleries fell quickly to the wayside. What he did do - and write - however, was astonishing: ruminations on his collaborative work with David Bowie, U2, James and Jah Wobble, interspersed with correspondence and essays dating back to 1978. These 'appendices' covered topics from the generative and ambient music Eno pioneered to what he believed the role of an artist and their art to be, alongside adroit commentary on quotidian tribulations and happenings around the world. This beautiful 25th-anniversary hardcover edition has been redesigned in the same size as the diary that eventually became this book. It features two ribbons, pink paper delineating the appendices (matching the original edition) and a two-tone paper-over-board cover, which pays homage to the original design. An intimate insight into one of the most influential creative artists of our time, A Year with Swollen Appendices is an essential classic.

Book excerpt: A selection of 400 black-and-white photographs taken by Tina Bara between 1983 and 1989 in East Berlin, the old GDR and other travels comprises this artists book. Documentary photographs on a clandestine trip to Russia, forbidden scenes from the VEB Buna chemical plant, and observations of punks and other young rebels are interwoven with intense full-body and portrait photographs of her friends as well as a photographic love story. Combined with texts in the form of subtitles, this poignant body of work captures a cinematic-like quality. Bara also shares her search for feminine identity within the subversive, melancholy rebellion against East Germanys dictatorial system. Her photographs convey the collective need to break out of a monotonous system repressive of individuality and self-will that no longer exist. This visual diary captures a moment right before the collapse of an entire political and ideological system.

Book excerpt: As a typology conceived in the twentieth century, the office building is often the architectural manifestation-- not only of global capital, but also of technological might and mass production. But when we think of these buildings, we often think more of objects than of space; more of appearance than of atmosphere. In A-Typical Plan, Jeannette Kuo offers a reversal of the experience, starting from the inside out, and prioritizing space over symbol. In particular, the book reconsiders the deep plan within the European context for a discussion on density, economy and, not least, sustainability. Featuring buildings by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Kenzo Tange, Giuseppe Terragni, Le Corbusier, SANAA, Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito, Christian Kerez, and many others, A-Typical Plan presents a collection of projects through history that have attempted to bring character to the deep plan as a spatial experience for the workspace. The work features essays by renowned authors, including Iñaki Ábalos, Pier Vittorio Aureli, Andrea Bassi, Florian Idenburg, Jeannette Kuo, Freek Persyn, and Antoine Picon. A conversation with Inès Lamunière and a graphic essay by Jimenez Lai round out the diverse perspectives. A final chapter presents the work of students at the EPFL, with whom this research began. Succinct and beautifully illustrated, A-Typical Plan is a reminder that even buildings created for quotidian uses can be spatially and experientially rich.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience the brilliant artist's lifelong obsession with nature and immersion in gardens, a bedrock of her hugely influential work. Yayoi Kusama’s work is the product of an infinite curiosity and obsessive drive to create. Throughout the artist’s long and varied career, there is one persistent yet little-studied through line—her deep engagement with nature. From early sketches depicting flowers at her family’s plant nursery in Japan, to her most recent monumental sculptures of botanical forms poised to take flight, Kusama consistently calls our attention to the patterns, connections, and cycles of living things that are not always visible. KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature is the accompanying catalogue to the first comprehensive exploration of the artist’s enduring fascination with the natural world, exhibited across the 250-acre landscape of The New York Botanical Garden. The exhibition examines her lifelong awareness and attunement to nature, which serves not merely as a source of inspiration, but is an integral source of power for her artistic language. This profound life force pervades all of Kusama’s work, from studies of the molecular to contemplations of the universal, resulting in a transcendent, cosmic nature. Exhibition guest curator Mika Yoshitake, an independent scholar specializing in postwar Japanese art, and Joanna L. Groarke, NYBG exhibitions curator, catalogue co-editors, bring together essays by art historians, curators, and a scientist, who each present unique interpretations of Kusama’s engagement with the natural world. Featuring more than 120 drawings, paintings, sculptures, and archival photographs, including stunning views of the works displayed in NYBG’s gardens and galleries, KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature offers a new perspective on one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists.

Book excerpt: Noise/Music looks at the phenomenon of noise in music, from experimental music of the early 20th century to the Japanese noise music and glitch electronica of today. It situates different musics in their cultural and historical context, and analyses them in terms of cultural aesthetics. Paul Hegarty argues that noise is a judgement about sound, that what was noise can become acceptable as music, and that in many ways the idea of noise is similar to the idea of the avant-garde. While it provides an excellent historical overview, the book's main concern is in the noise music that has emerged since the mid 1970s, whether through industrial music, punk, free jazz, or the purer noise of someone like Merzbow. The book progresses seamlessly from discussions of John Cage, Erik Satie, and Pauline Oliveros through to bands like Throbbing Gristle and the Boredoms. Sharp and erudite, and underpinned throughout by the ideas of thinkers like Adorno and Deleuze, Noise/Music is the perfect primer for anyone interested in the louder side of experimental music.
