Dafür wird zuerst der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit definiert und der Ansatz von "von der Wiege zur Wiege" erklärt. Anschließend wird das Konzept des "Anthropozän" diskutiert und die Rolle von "Cradle to Cradle" als ethisches Prinzip untersucht. Die Vielfalt der Erde ist der Inbegriff von dem Satz „von der Wiege zur Wiege“ – Kohlenstoff, Wasserstoff, Sauerstoff und Stickstoff bilden den natürlichen Motor der Erde und werden in einem in sich geschlossenen Kreislauf immer wieder verwendet. Bis der Mensch sich mit der Industrie in dieses natürliche Kreislaufsystem einmischte, herrschte ein Gleichgewicht an Materialien auf der Erde. Braungart und McDonough sprechen von zwei Strömen an Materialien: der Biomasse und der technischen Masse. Diese sind wiederum biologische Nährstoffe, Biosphäre betreffend, und den technischen Nährstoffen, essentiell für die Technosphäre, der industriellen Infrastruktur. Die Problematik vor der die Menschheit steht, ist das Wiege- zu-Wiege- System zu imitieren. Die Industrie konzipiert ihre Produkte nach unserem Konsumverhalten, heißt Produkte sind oftmals nicht angelegt lange zu halten oder recycelbar zu sein, sondern sind nur für eine bestimmte Zeitspanne konstruiert, damit sich der Konsument nach neuen Gütern orientiert. Fälschlicherweise assoziiert man das Wegbringen von einem Gut, mit dem völligen Verschwinden von einem Gut. Diese Annahme ist irrsinnig, da der Ort „weg“ nicht existiert. Die Erde ist so konzipiert worden, dass im Grunde nichts außer Hitze und Meteoriten den Planeten verlassen kann. Daher bleibt alles, was der Mensch je erschaffen hat, in diesem System erhalten.

Das primäre Ziel dieser Forschungsarbeit besteht darin, herauszufinden, welche Herausforderungen und Besonderheiten im Innovationsmanagement von Unternehmen auftreten können, wenn diese dem Ansatz von Cradle-to-Cradle folgen. Mit Hilfe des Pentathlon Frameworks sollen die einzelnen Elemente genauer untersucht und analysiert werden. Insgesamt besteht die Ausarbeitung des theoretischen Teils dieser Forschungsarbeit aus vier verschiedenen Kapiteln. Im ersten Kapitel wird nach der Einleitung die Problemstellung erörtert-, sowie die Zielsetzung und die zu untersuchende Forschungsfrage. Im zweiten Kapitel wird der Ansatz der Kreislaufwirtschaft definitorisch von dem Cradle-to-Cradle Prinzip abgegrenzt und beschrieben. Außerdem wird auf die zwei Kreisläufe des C2C-Prinzips eingegangen und die unterschiedlichen Kriterien betrachtet, die für eine Produktzertifizierung nach dem Cradle-to-Cradle Prinzip erforderlich sind. Im dritten Kapitel werden zunächst die Begriffe Innovation und Innovationsmanagement voneinander abgegrenzt, dann folgt eine Beschreibung strategischer Unternehmensanalysekonzepte, sowie eine SWOT-Analyse zum C2C-Prinzip. Danach wird die Innovation im Kontext zu Cradle-to-Cradle erläutert und vier Innovationsarten beschrieben, sowie die einzelnen Elemente des Pentathlon Frameworks. Im vierten Kapitel wird zunächst das Unternehmen C&A als Beispiel für Cradle-to-Cradle zertifizierte Produkte angeführt. Des Weiteren werden Innovationsbarrieren identifiziert, die im Kontext der Kreislaufwirtschaft stehen. In einem weiteren Unterkapitel wird dann auf eine Studie der Universität Linz eingegangen, in der Lösungsansätze zu den zuvor beschriebenen Innovationsbarrieren erläutert werden. Das fünfte Kapitel beinhaltet eine Auflistung der Methoden der empirischen Forschung, das sechste die Diskussion der Untersuchungsergebnisse.
