At first thought it may seem quite wonderful that tales of this kind should be found in such condi tion while the whole body of tales are passing away so rapidly; on examination, however, this will appear not only reasonable, but as the inevi table outcome Of the political and social condition Of the people. Book excerpt: First written down in the eighth century AD, these early Irish stories depict a far older world - part myth, part legend and part history. Rich with magic and achingly beautiful, they speak of a land of heroic battles, intense love and warrior ideals, in which the otherworld is explored and men mingle freely with the gods. From the vivid adventures of the great Celtic hero Cu Chulaind, to the stunning 'Exile of the Sons of Uisliu' - a tale of treachery, honour and romance - these are masterpieces of passion and vitality, and form the foundation for the Irish literary tradition: a mythic legacy that was a powerful influence on the work of Yeats, Synge and Joyce.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk-Lore and Legends: Ireland The stories have yet to be discovered which can compete with folk-lore stories in fascination for the young, and the reason for this it is not hard to divine. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends and Stories Ireland Though the sources whence these stories are derived are open to every one, yet chance or choice may prevent thousands from making such sources available; and though the village crone and mountain guide have many hearers, still their circle is so circumscribed, that most of what I have ventured to lay before my readers, is, for the first time, made tangible to the greater portion of those who do me the favour to become such. In one story alone - "Paddy the Piper" - I have no claim to authorship, and this I take the earliest opportunity of declaring, and as I have entered upon my confessions, it is, perhaps, equally fair to state that although most of the tales are authentic, there is one purely my invention, namely, "The Gridiron." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Mythology of IrelandThese practitioners have their specialties, and one who deals with the evil eye will have nothing to do with a fairy sickness, neither will the fairy woman meddle with an illness which is due to the influence of the evil eye. It must not be supposed. However, that the people depend entirely upon the skill of these doctors. On the contrary, every house keeper is well acquainted with the virtues of all the common herbs, to which she never fails to resort in case of need - always accompanying the application with a prayer - and it is only when she has exhausted her resources or is convinced that the sickness is of supernatural origin. That she applies to the wideac' Zuib'o. When an ailment does not yield readily to simple treatment, it is generally ascribed to one of three causes, viz., the fairies, the evil eye, or witchcraft. The last of these is not often held responsible, as Irish witches usually confine their operations to stealing the butter, and seldom harm the owners. We will speak first of the fairies.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legend Lays of Ireland It is rather remarkable, and it serves probably to account, in a great measure, for the natural good humour, gentleness and generous dispositions of the Irish, that our popular mythology has few revolting superstitions or horrible creations Of fancy connected with it. Even those fictions of more fearful import and gross conception, linked to the indigenous, sportive and light airy fabrications of our legend mongers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland The erudite Lessing styles a preface the his tory of a book. Now, though there can be no necessity for a preface in that sense of the word to the reprint of a work of mere whim, which has been nearly ten years before the public, yet a few words are requisite to prevent the present con doused and revised edition from being considered an abridgment. However compact may be the mode of printing adopted, the act of compressing into one volume the three in which the Fairy Legends origi nally appeared, involved to a certain extent the necessity of selection, perhaps the most difficult of all tasks judiciously to perform but the follow ing statement will show the system proceeded on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends and Stories of Ireland: Second Series Gentle Reader, I send up my card, and I hope you will not say you are "not at home." It is some time since I paid you a visit, and you received me then so well, though quite a stranger, that I am tempted to hope you will not drop my acquaintance, now that you know who I am. It is no easy matter to have a card presented to you, seated as you are in the Temple of Public Favour: - Critics are the lacqueys that line the hall leading to the sanctuary, and it is not every one's card they will send in; while, sometimes, an unfortunate name gets so roughly handled amongst them, as to be rendered quite illegible. However, they were extremely obliging to me, the last time I needed their good offices, and as I have done nothing since to offend them, I hope they won't keep me standing at the door, in these Easterly winds, till I catch a Spring cough, though, I dare say, my friends in the Row would be well pleased if I were driven into a rapid consumption.
