Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ritual scholars note that rituals have powerful psychological, social and even biological effects, but these findings have not yet been integrated into the practice of psychotherapy and psychiatry. In Healing Symbols in Psychotherapy Erik D. Goodwyn attempts to rectify this by reviewing the most pertinent work done in the area of ritual study and applying it to the practice of psychotherapy and psychiatry, providing a new framework with which to approach therapy. The book combines ritual study with depth psychology, placebo study, biogenetic structuralism and cognitive anthropology to create a model of interdisciplinary psychology. Goodwyn uses examples of rituals from history, folklore and cross-cultural study and uncovers the universal themes embedded within them as well as their psychological functions. As ritual scholars show time and again how Western culture and medicine is ‘ritually impoverished’ the application of ritual themes to therapy yields many new avenues for healing. The interdisciplinary model used here suggests new ways to approach problems with basic identity, complicated grief, anxiety, depression meaninglessness and a host of other problems encountered in clinical work. The interdisciplinary approach of this accessibly-written book will appeal to psychotherapists, psychiatrists and Jungian analysts as well as those in training and readers with an interest in the science behind ritual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching Druidry as an emerging religious movement that offers an alternative to the mainstream materialist, consumerist culture of the United States, Kimberly Kirner analyses her own life as a Druid through the lens of her profession as a cultural anthropologist. Interweaving lively stories of her life as a Druid with accessible analytical essays drawing from an unusual array of literature from the anthropology of religion, the anthropology of consciousness, organizational anthropology, cognitive anthropology, and ethnoecology, she leads the reader into an experiential and conceptual understanding of Druidry as a way of life and as a contemporary Western new religious movement that challenges Christo-centric definitions of religion. Reflecting on three domains of the Druidic life, the author describes the Druidic worldview (place, time, and the body), community (relational spirituality), and vocation (ethics and action). These descriptions are punctuated with reflective essays that question the boundaries and nature of religion as it is generally understood in the Western world by examining how Druidry might be understood using concepts more appropriate to Druids' conceptualizations of themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Western world, magic has often functioned as an umbrella term for various religious beliefs and ritual practices that seek to influence events by harnessing supernatural power. The definition of these myriad occult and esoteric traditions have, however, usually come from those that are opposed to its practice; notably authorities in religious, legal and intellectual spheres. This book seeks to provide a new perspective, directly from the practitioners of modern Western magic, by exploring how a distinctive mode of embodiment and consciousness can produce a transition from an ‘ordinary’ to a ‘magical’ worldview. Starting with an introduction to the study of magic in the Western academy, the book then presents the author’s own participant observation of five ethnographic case studies of modern Western magic. The focus of these ethnographic case studies is directed towards ideas and methods the informants employ to self-legitimise and self-represent as ‘magicians’. It concludes by discussing the phenomenological implications and issues around embodiment that are inherent to the contemporary practice of magic. This is a unique insight into the lived experience of practitioners of modern magic. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of the Occult and New Religious Movements, as well as Religious Studies academics examining issues around the embodiment and the anthropology of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes something mythic? What do mythic events and narratives have to do with us? In Mythology, David Leeming offers an unusual and effective approach to the subject of mythology by stressing universal themes through myths of many cultures. This anthology collects a wide array of narrative texts from the Bible to English literature to interpretations by Joseph Campbell, C.G. Jung, and others, which illustrate how myths serve whole societies in our universal search for meaning. Leeming illustrates the various stages or rites of passage of the mythic universal hero, from birth to childhood, through trial and quest, death, descent, rebirth, and ascension. The arrangement of texts by themes such as "Childhood, Initiation and Divine Signs," "The Descent to the Underworld," and "Resurrection and Rebirth" strip mythic characters of their many national and cultural "masks" to reveal their archetypal aspects. Real figures, including Jesus and Mohammed, are also included underlining the theory that myths are real and can be applied to real life. This edition is updated to include additional heroine myths, as well as Navajo, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, and African tales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the cute town of Greenwood, Pixie and Pippin start their once-in-a-lifetime adventure by finding a hidden chest under an old oak tree. Inside the chest, they find a strange map that leads them to the mysterious Crystal of Light, which is the only thing that can keep their town from going dark. They decide to follow the map because they are brave and want to try new things. What they find is a world full of surprises and problems they could never have imagined. To solve the Riddle of the Trees, they learn how important it is to work together and listen as they go through the Whispering Woods. The magic of the River of Dreams is broken, but their faith in each other helps them get across. In The Meadow of Mists, they meet Misty the fox. She becomes a good friend and teacher for them, showing them how to trust others and depend on their skills. The Mountain That Moans shows kids how laughter can help them feel better. They learn a lot about themselves and what it means to be truly brave by meeting challenges like the Garden of Time, the Valley of Shadows, and the Bridge of Questions. These places test their honesty, bravery, and mental toughness. When they see themselves in the City of Mirrors, they learn how important it is to know and like who they are. The Forest of Giants shows kids how to get along with creatures much bigger than them, and the Cave of Echoes stresses how important it is to be able to communicate clearly. In the end, their trip brings them to the Crystal of Light, which is watched over by a dragon whose worth is based on the good things they did along the way. When they get back to Greenwood after getting the Crystal, everyone is happy for them. The Crystal of Light, which is on top of the tallest building, gives off light, which drives away darkness and protects the town for a long time. The journey of Pixie and Pippin is a touching tale of bravery, friendship, and the desire to learn. They not only save their town, but they also grow as people and learn important lessons about being brave, working together, and having faith in yourself. Their story backs up the idea that real adventures bring out the best in us and teach us lessons that shape who we are and help others. Chapter 1: What They Found A curious and lively friend pair named Pixie and Pippin lived in Greenwood, a cute little town surrounded by big green trees. Pippin was a little quieter than Pixie, but she was just as curious. Pixie had beautiful eyes that were always shining with wonder and fun. They liked looking for things in the woods and making up stories while the leaves and bark rustled. Pixie and Pippin were playing hide-and-seek near an old oak tree on a sunny morning. The sunbeams danced through the leaves, making beautiful shadows on the ground. There was no other tree in town like this one. Its huge branches seemed to reach for the sky. The person was the oldest and smartest in the town. Pippin closed his eyes and counted while Pixie looked for the best place to hide. That's when she saw something strange in the ground around the tree's roots. It looked a little different, like the ground had been shaken up. Pixie was so interested that she didn't play the game and instead called Pippin. They dug together to carefully get rid of the leaves and dirt. They quickly touched something tough. They got more excited with each scoop of dirt, so they dug faster and soon found a box. The sun, moon, and stars were carved into the chest in a very detailed way. The iron clasp was rusty. Pixie and Pippin both looked worried and happy as they opened the chest together. The most beautiful map they had ever seen was on a silk cloth inside. They had never seen a chart like this one before. It shone with its own light, and the way it pointed to was gentle and friendly. The path went around and around, going through an area that no one knew until it reached a fork in the road that was marked by a sparkling gem. Their hearts skipped a beat. They were about to have a real experience that was unlike anything they had ever thought of. The thrill of finding something new and the promise of what's to come filled their eyes as they looked at each other. This map was their ticket to a trip they could never have imagined. It took them through beautiful places that were far from Greenwood's well-known roads. Pixie and Pippin knew big things were going to happen in their lives when they held the map. They were about to enter a magical and mysterious world where anything was possible. Chapter 2: Making a Choice. It was a nice night, and Pixie and Pippin slept well in their beds while the moon shone over Greenwood. They were so excited about what they had found that they couldn't sleep. The charming map stuck in their thoughts. Its worn corners and well-drawn lines showed them a road they had never seen before. It wasn't just a map; it held the promise of an exciting journey and problems to be solved. They had so many questions in their minds. What amazing things might they see? What kind of people might they meet along the way? They got chills down their spines just thinking about it. Though there was some joy, there was also some fear. They knew that having experiences meant more than just knowing about the world's wonders. Having adventures meant taking chances, getting past problems, and visiting places that had not been seen before. And this wasn't just any adventure—they were looking for the legendary Crystal of Light, a diamond that would keep their town safe from the dark. As they lay there in the dark and talked about what might happen, they realized this was more than just a chance to go on a journey. It was a chance to make a change and become the leads in their own story. They gave careful thought to their family, friends, and everyone else in Greenwood. What would happen if the Crystal of Light was found? Think about how happy and relieved everyone would be. During the night, people mumbled their plans and shared their dreams. As soon as the sun came up and lit up their windows, Pixie and Pippin knew what they were going to do. It really would be dangerous. Their path would be hard, and they might even be in danger. On the other hand, the thought of taking care of their town and discovering the magic of the enchanted worlds made them very determined. They were excited and nervous at the same time when they chose to leave at first light. Even though they knew the trip wouldn't be easy, they couldn't say no to the thrill of the adventure and the chance to be heroes. With the magical map to help them find the Crystal of Light, Pixie and Pippin were about to go on an adventure into the unknown. They were eager to follow the path because they knew this was the moment that would make their lives different every day.

Book excerpt: How does a mind think magically? The research documented in this book is one answer that allows the disciplines of anthropology and neurobiology to come together to reveal a largely hidden dynamic of magic. Magic gets to the very heart of some theoretical and methodological difficulties encountered in the social and natural sciences, especially to do with issues of rationality. This book examines magic head-on, not through its instrumental aspects but as an orientation of consciousness. Magical consciousness is affective, associative and synchronistic, shaped through individual experience within a particular environment. This work focuses on an in-depth case study using the anthropologist’s own experience gained through years of anthropological fieldwork with British practitioners of magic. As an ethnographic view, it is an intimate study of the way in which the cognitive architecture of a mind engages the emotions and imagination in a pattern of meanings related to childhood experiences, spiritual communications and the environment. Although the detail of the involvement in magical consciousness presented here is necessarily specific, the central tenets of modus operandi is common to magical thought in general, and can be applied to cross-cultural analyses to increase understanding of this ubiquitous human phenomenon.
