Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Ruhleben and Back: A Great Adventure in Three Phases IN September of 1914, two months after war had started between Germany and England, I set out to reach Berlin in order, it is hardly necessary to add unknown to the German authorities, to act as a correspondent on behalf of the Daily Chronicle of London. I had also been asked to write letters for the Cambridge Magazine. Ruhleben was not then in existence as a prison camp, and I should certainly have had no intention of going there even if it had been. My object was to go to Berlin and see what there was of interest going on there, and then to travel across to the Rhine and the industrial districts of the West and South I reckoned a couple of months would see the whole thing done, and that if I felt matters were becoming hot and unpleasant I would bolt as quickly as possible. It must be remembered that the desire to know the truth of what was going on at that time in the interior of Germany was intense. At the words Krieg, Mobil, the oodgates of news had clanged to, and not a word that could be pre vented, or had not a purpose in it, was leaving Germany. At home masses of information were being produced in newspapers of all complexions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The citizens and most of them employed their time knocking a ball around with a bit of a_ stick or other harmless amuse ments. Food was given them by the men in grey, and by people who used to be their friends and relations across the waters, who also supplied them with money. The most important beings however or those who thought themselves most important were the so called chiefs or captains. The villagers held these. Great men in awe and durst do nothing they forbade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A War-Time Journal, Germany 1914 and German Travel Notes Prefaces are rarely read, yet I have the hardihood to venture on this one because there are certain things in connection with my journal which it is necessary to explain. On returning from Germany, although urged by my friends to publish the story of my experiences, I refused, fearing to do anything which in the smallest degree might prejudice the case of those still in captivity. There came a day, nevertheless, when I read that all English people had left Altheim. The papers announced that men under forty-five had been interned at Ruhleben, and those over that age had been sent to Giessen. There seemed, therefore, no possible object in further withholding the journal, since, after all, there was nothing in it which could by any possibility affect the fate of others less fortunate than I. Accordingly I sent my manuscript to the Evening Standard, which accepted it, and published. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1917. The author was the late Ambassador to the German Imperial Court. Illustrated. From the Foreword: I am writing what should have been the last chapter of this book as a foreword because I want to bring home to our people the gravity of the situation; because I want to tell them that the military and naval power of the German Empire is unbroken; that of the twelve million men whom the Kaiser has called to the colors but one million, five hundred thousand have been killed, five hundred thousand permanently disabled, not more than five hundred thousand are prisoners of war, and about five hundred thousand constitute the number of wounded or those on the sick list of each day, leaving at all times about nine million effectives under arms. I state these figures because Americans do not grasp either the magnitude or the importance of this war. Perhaps the statement that over five million prisoners of war are held in the various countries will bring home to Americans the enormous mass of men engaged. Contents: My First Year in Germany; Political and Geographical; Diplomatic Work of First Winter in Berlin; Militarism in Germany and the Zabern Affair; Psychology and Causes Which Prepared the Nation for War; At Kiel Just Before the War; The System; The Days Before the War; The Americans at the Outbreak of Hostilities; Prisoners of War; First Days of the War: Political and Diplomatic; Diplomatic Negotiations; Mainly Commercial; Work for the Germans; War Charities; Hate; Diplomatic Negotiations; Liberals and Reasonable Men; The German People in War; and Last. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of an enigmatic genius who changed warfare forever In the World War II era, Geoffrey Pyke was described as one of the world's great minds -- to rank alongside Einstein. Pyke was an inventor, adventurer, polymath, and unlikely hero of both world wars. He earned a fortune on the stock market, founded an influential pre-school, wrote a bestseller, and came up with the idea for the US and Canadian Special Forces. In 1942, he convinced Winston Churchill to build an aircraft carrier out of reinforced ice. Pyke escaped from a German WWI prison camp, devised an ingenious plan to help the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, and launched a private attempt to avert the outbreak of the Second World War by sending into Nazi Germany a group of pollsters disguised as golfers. And he may have been a Russian spy. In 2009, long after Pyke's death, MI5 released a mass of material suggesting that Pyke was in fact a senior official in the Soviet Comintern. In 1951, papers relating to Pyke were found in the flat of "Cambridge Spy" Guy Burgess after his defection to Moscow. MI5 had "watchers" follow Pyke through the bombed-out streets of London, his letters were opened, and listening devices picked up clues to his real identity. Convinced he was a Soviet agent codenamed Professor P, MI5 helped to bring his career to an end. Henry Hemming is the first reporter to sift through this extraordinary new information and finally tell Pyke's astonishing story in full: his brilliance, his flaws, and his life of adventures, ideas, and secrets.

Book excerpt: John Buchan's 'The Complete Novels of John Buchan: 25+ Spy Classics, Thrillers & Adventure Novels in One Premium Edition (Unabridged)' is a compelling collection of thrilling and adventurous stories that showcase Buchan's mastery of the spy genre. With a mix of espionage, political intrigue, and daring escapades, the book provides readers with a captivating glimpse into the world of early 20th-century espionage literature. Buchan's writing style is both engaging and evocative, drawing readers into a world of danger and excitement. His attention to detail and intricate plots make each novel a page-turner that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. John Buchan, a Scottish novelist and politician, drew inspiration from his own experiences in the British intelligence services during World War I to write his spy novels. His background in politics and diplomacy lends a sense of authenticity to his stories, adding depth and complexity to the characters and plots. Buchan's keen insight into human nature and his understanding of the geopolitical landscape of his time are evident in his nuanced portrayals of spies and secret agents. I highly recommend 'The Complete Novels of John Buchan' to readers who enjoy action-packed thrillers with a historical twist. Buchan's storytelling prowess and his unique perspective on the world of espionage make this collection a must-read for fans of spy fiction and adventure novels.
