Book excerpt: Traditional guidebooks give straightforward advice on what to do and where to go, but in this remarkable cultural history, celebrated journalist and Canary Islands native Juan Cruz Ruiz offers something much more—a fusion of literature and travel that will captivate both globetrotters and interested readers looking for a more intimate exploration of this rich archipelago, which is part of Spain, yet completely distinct from the mainland.Over twelve million visitors travel to the Canary Islands every year to see its famous black and white sand beaches and attend Carnival. Reading The Canary Islands is like traveling with a personal tour guide, one who will tell you in exquisite language about the original inhabitants of the Canaries, the history of the islands, and what life was like for residents of the Canaries before tourism. Weaving together lectures, memories, and experiences, Ruiz explores the geography, the food, and the local art of the Canaries, and tells the stories of the Canarian people. Including writings, anecdotes, and comments of personalities connected to island—Ignacio Aldecoa, Unamuno, Humboldt, García Márquez, Chillida, César Manrique— Juan Cruz Ruiz introduces readers to the very essence of the Canary Islands and its people. The Canary Islands is both inspiring and useful—an in-depth look at the islands and the islanders, as well as a unique guide to unusual Canary Islands destinations, the native cuisine, and the history, mythology, and ecology of this cherished destination.

Book excerpt: In this minutely detailed, comprehensive chronology, Toru Kiuchi and Yoshinobu Hakutani document the life in letters of the greatest African American writer of the twentieth century. The author of Black Boy and Native Son, among other works, Wright wrote unflinchingly about the black experience in the United States, where his books still influence discussions of race and social justice. Entries are documented by Wright's journals, articles, and other works published and unpublished, as well as his letters to and from friends, associates, writers and public figures. Part One covers Wright's life through the year 1946, the period in which he published his best-known work. Part Two covers the final fifteen years of his life in exile, a prolific period in which he wrote two novels, four works of nonfiction, and four thousand haiku. Each part begins with a historical and critical introduction.

Book excerpt: In Ecology on the Ground and in the Clouds, Andrea Nye raises a question: In a time of climate change and environmental crisis, where should we look for inspiration? Is it to Alexander von Humboldt, the "inventor of nature" who viewed the cosmos from the lofty peak of Mount Chimborazo? Or is it to Humboldt's travel partner, the botanist Aimé Bonpland, who left Europe behind for forty years of conservation, agroforestry, and cooperative farming in the newly independent Republic of Argentina? For Bonpland, order and harmony are not unveiled with European reason and insight; they are made on the ground by intelligent, honorable, and diverse working men and women. Cosmos is not a hidden balance of nature; it is order in thought and action that ensures what we do is coherent and for the common good. It is fair and efficient government, just adjudication of disputes, and good management. It is loving attention to intricate "cogs and wheels" of natural processes at the same time as imagining new forms of beauty and stability in human communities and working landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After self-reflecting for a few weeks, I thought a lot about if I was to die tomorrow, would I be happy with everything I had done. Had I ever lived my "dream?" I realized that although my life had been interesting, the answer was "No." Think about it, what would you do before you die? Where would you go? What would you see? Who do you want to meet? I took the chance and "released" from "real life" to see what was out there. It is a right that we all have. I know many people have traveled to "find themselves" and though that was not my intent, it happened. I did something that no one can ever take away from me - something for myself. For the first time in my life I did not have a plan, was selfish and it felt great. The first thing I packed was a wine key. This is my European story: 42 cities, 14 countries, in 80 days - solo and unplanned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did early modern English people write about themselves, and how do we listen to their voices four centuries later? The authors of Early Modern English Lives: Autobiography and Self-Representation 1500-1660 argue that identity is depicted through complex, subtle, and often contradictory social interactions and literary forms. Diaries, letters, daily spiritual reckonings, household journals, travel journals, accounts of warfare, incidental meditations on the nature of time, death and self-reflection, as well as life stories themselves: these are just some of the texts that allow us to address the social and historical conditions that influenced early modern self-writing. The texts explored in Early Modern English Lives do not automatically speak to our familiar patterns of introspection and self-inquiry. Often formal, highly metaphorical and emotionally restrained, they are very different in both tone and purpose from the autobiographies that crowd bookshelves today. Does the lack of emotional description suggest that complex emotions themselves, in all the depth and variety that we now understand (and expect of) them, are a relatively modern phenomenon? This is one of the questions addressed by Early Modern English Lives. The authors bring to our attention the kinds of rhetorical and generic features of early modern self-representation that can help us to appreciate people living four hundred years ago as the complicated, composite figures they were: people whose expression of identity involved an elaborate interplay of roles and discourses, and for whom the notion of privacy itself was a wholly different phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simple Solutions: For Planet Earth is a scientific book written in a popular style for the average reader. You have read about Peak Oil and Global Climate Warming, and complained about $4/gallon gasoline, but how really serious are these headlines and annoyances? The author has worked his entire career on: the science, technology, education, administration and politics of these subjects, and crystallizes this complex field into understandable elements, providing simple solutions for humanity. Does it make sense for the renewable energy budget of the Federal Government to be about $1 billion/year when: o Annual tax incentives and government programs for the oil industry are supposedly in the range between $38 billion and $115 billion, although Lester Brown says $210 billion in 2005. o Farm subsidies alone in 2004 cost taxpayers $16.2 billion. o Our country spends $12 billion a month, or $144 billion/year, on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, ostensibly to protect oil, only to raise prices. The author’s long experience with the Greenhouse Effect has led him to believe that methane, not carbon dioxide, could well be the critical gas of concern, for there is potential for global warming to cascade into, what he terms, the Venus Syndrome. The closing chapter speculates on a hypothesis regarding mega-tsunamis (100 meter waves) from landslides. While simple solutions are suggested, the problem is the inability of our civilization to agree on a workable strategy, which is further weakened by the lack of will on part of the general populace. Thus, the reader is urged to help make that crucial difference. Instructions and examples are provided on how to attain Rainbow Vision to carry out this mission for a better Planet Earth. The simplest solution is for everyone to join in on the effort.
