Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carolyn Wilkins grew up defending her racial identity. Because of her light complexion and wavy hair, she spent years struggling to convince others that she was black. Her family’s prominence set Carolyn’s experiences even further apart from those of the average African American. Her father and uncle were well-known lawyers who had graduated from Harvard Law School. Another uncle had been a child prodigy and protégé of Albert Einstein. And her grandfather had been America's first black assistant secretary of labor. Carolyn's parents insisted she follow the color-conscious rituals of Chicago's elite black bourgeoisie—experiences Carolyn recalls as some of the most miserable of her entire life. Only in the company of her mischievous Aunt Marjory, a woman who refused to let the conventions of “proper” black society limit her, does Carolyn feel a true connection to her family's African American heritage. When Aunt Marjory passes away, Carolyn inherits ten bulging scrapbooks filled with family history and memories. What she finds in these photo albums inspires her to discover the truth about her ancestors—a quest that will eventually involve years of research, thousands of miles of travel, and much soul-searching. Carolyn learns that her great-grandfather John Bird Wilkins was born into slavery and went on to become a teacher, inventor, newspaperman, renegade Baptist minister, and a bigamist who abandoned five children. And when she discovers that her grandfather J. Ernest Wilkins may have been forced to resign from his labor department post by members of the Eisenhower administration, Carolyn must confront the bittersweet fruits of her family's generations-long quest for status and approval. Damn Near White is an insider’s portrait of an unusual American family. Readers will be drawn into Carolyn’s journey as she struggles to redefine herself in light of the long-buried secrets she uncovers. Tackling issues of class, color, and caste, Wilkins reflects on the changes of African American life in U.S. history through her dedicated search to discover her family’s powerful story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After four years of college and six years in seminary, William Mills was ready for a parish--or so he thought. He didn't realize much of his time would be endless discussions about bagels and coffee, digging ditches, and parking lot condom patrols. For six years, community life was just humming along. Then disaster struck. Mills' life came crashing down when nearly a third of his congregation left in a public power play, causing him to question his faith in himself, in the church, and in God. Marva Dawn, a noted writer of spirituality and ministry, said that being a pastor is like being peppered with popcorn: after a while, you just get tired of it, pack your bags, and move on. However, as Mills himself says, "I was either too stubborn or stupid, so I stayed." Losing My Religion is about the ups and downs, ins and outs, choices and challenges of being a pastor in the twenty-first-century church. It's also about the redemptive power of community life and finding healing and wholeness in a broken world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Long Road to Freedom By: Jenny Chapman So much in the life of Jenny Chapman seemed against her. She has written about her life from the age of three to her present age of 74 years. She was born in the hardships of the Second World War. At the age of three, her father started to abuse her sexually. Chapman was also brought up in a strict religion. She was not allowed to mix with others outside of this religion. This meant that she had no friends at school, or later, at college. Without a friend for most of her life, she was bullied unmercifully at school. She was admitted to psychiatric hospitals with deep depression, an eating disorder, and as a suicide risk. Chapman’s grandfather and father were both bipolar. This was detected in Chapman herself from a very early age. This became a battle throughout her life, and is something she will always live with. Her mother was extremely overweight. From an early age, Chapman became very aware of her size and how she looked in comparison to other girls. It was at college – because of a remark from a lecturer – that she developed Anorexia Nervosa. Chapman became a teacher. As a teacher, she empathized with her pupils that were emotionally hurt or scarred as she had been, and gave of her time to see them through their troubles. Despite all, Chapman persevered through life, never giving up and always striving for her best. Achieving this, she went on to gain the freedom she always longed for as a child. She is living a happy and free life with so much pleasure. She has her friends and a loyal cat. She can only say never give up and always aim high.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day, Frankie Roberts hears a preacher pronounce that a woman’s place is in the home, not in the pulpit. But this mother of four daughters and wife of a pastor in New Jersey won’t hear of it; she knows she has a special calling. In 1959, Frankie packs up her children, leaves her husband, and moves to Sioux City, Iowa, to start a ministry. In this memoir, one of Frankie’s daughters, the author Debra Roberts Torres-Reyes narrates her mother’s story. Availing herself of both humor and honesty, Torres-Reyes describes being raised by Pentecostal Holiness Ministers and living with a fanatical preacher mother who inflicts both physical and verbal abuse on her offspring. The author reflects on how the church’s views and actions—speaking in tongues, casting out demons, and dancing in the spirit—caused her to grow up with poor self-esteem, to suffer panic attacks, and to live in constant mental and emotional torment about The Rapture, demons, the devil, and hell. The Evangelical’s Daughter describes how Torres-Reyes ultimately breaks out of a self-destructive lifestyle, joins the military, and later attends college and law school, finally becoming an attorney. This is one woman’s true story about finding God and leaving religious dogma behind.

It focuses on the unique modes through which print organized the presentation of musical texts, the conception of written compositions, and the ways in which music was disseminated and performed. In highlighting the tensions that exist between musical print and performance this volume raises not only the question of how older scores can be read today, but also how music expressed its meanings to listeners in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes, on the journey of life, it is easy to think that we are the first to walk this path or that we are alone in our struggles. This book calls us to reflect on the lives that have touched our own. Thinking about the women God has placed in your life who are they? And what have they taught you? The hope is that when you read these stories, you will find yourself reflecting on the women who have loved you, protected you, and formed you. Like the women in the Bible, they may have made cakes when their pantries were empty, visited when you were expecting your children, wiped your tears when the sorrow was too much, or made you laugh like no one else can! May these stories make you laugh and cryand reach out to the women whose lives are squares in the quilt of your life. May these stories fill your hearts with gratitude for the women you see every day and for the God who made us all. Theirs are the stories of faith, hope, and love.
