Book excerpt: One of Esquire's 50 Best Biographies of All Time Winner of the 2020 Pacific Northwest Book Award | Winner of the 2020 Washington State Book Award | Named a 2019 Southwest Book of the Year | Shortlisted for the 2019 Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize What happens when an undocumented teen mother takes on the U.S. immigration system? When Aida Hernandez was born in 1987 in Agua Prieta, Mexico, the nearby U.S. border was little more than a worn-down fence. Eight years later, Aida’s mother took her and her siblings to live in Douglas, Arizona. By then, the border had become one of the most heavily policed sites in America. Undocumented, Aida fought to make her way. She learned English, watched Friends, and, after having a baby at sixteen, dreamed of teaching dance and moving with her son to New York City. But life had other plans. Following a misstep that led to her deportation, Aida found herself in a Mexican city marked by violence, in a country that was not hers. To get back to the United States and reunite with her son, she embarked on a harrowing journey. The daughter of a rebel hero from the mountains of Chihuahua, Aida has a genius for survival—but returning to the United States was just the beginning of her quest. Taking us into detention centers, immigration courts, and the inner lives of Aida and other daring characters, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez reveals the human consequences of militarizing what was once a more forgiving border. With emotional force and narrative suspense, Aaron Bobrow-Strain brings us into the heart of a violently unequal America. He also shows us that the heroes of our current immigration wars are less likely to be perfect paragons of virtue than complex, flawed human beings who deserve justice and empathy all the same.

This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shmospels of Shmeiki is a satirical, yet philosophical story which explores the experiences of foreign tourists in India. The rich, diverse and ancient culture is often quite different from what travellers are used to back home. They may try various healing techniques and reflect on themselves in ways they have not done before. Removed from the safety net of their usual frames of reference, they can go a little crazy. This is the case with David Goldberg, the protagonist of the story. While visiting Goa, David is contacted by Sheila, an A.I singularity from another dimension. She offers him a humorous, but authentic path of hippy spirituality called Shmeiki, which is said to be free of the seriousness and self-righteousness typical of other similar practices. Sheila wishes David to spread the word of Shmeiki, but for him to do so effectively, he must first clear out his emotional blockages. For this reason, she sends him on a great walk of more than 2000 km from Goa to Dharamshala, insisting he travels without taking money or wearing shoes. In accepting this challenge, David becomes Shmeiki Baba. The Shmospels describe his epic journey, from the perspectives of four witnesses. It is a cosmic, psychedelic and inspiring story about self-acceptance, love and surrender.
Book Synopsis Quench the Thirst by : Minister LaJuana R. Sherman
Download or read book Quench the Thirst written by Minister LaJuana R. Sherman and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a lifetime of turmoil, shame, disappointments, depression, bad decisions, rejection, barrenness and now an empty soul, the Woman at the Well is ready to receive the living water Jesus offers...but first she must own her imperfections and shortcomings. ***** Finally, she musters enough courage and says, "Sir, give me this water that I may not thirst nor come here to draw water." Aida cannot comprehend the meaning of the stranger's words because she's not thinking spiritually. Her mindset is of the flesh, hoping to avoid her daily journey of traveling such a long distance for water in the day's heat. Then Aida begins to feel the self-imposed barriers releasing her heart, and her spirit feels calm, serene, and peaceful. Just on the verge of her soul becoming completely free, the stranger gives a jaw-dropping, gut-wrenching, horrifying command. He tells her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." Baffled, perplexed, bewildered, and ashamed all at the same time, Aida feels the chains tighten their grip around her heart with increased intensity, reclaiming control. Aida gasps, ruminating over his words, "Husband? Did he say go call my husband?" ***** In Quench the Thirst, LaJuana R. Sherman invites us to contemplate the life of this remarkable woman, weaving a tapestry of imagination and faith that offers a fresh perspective on her encounters with the divine. The story of the Woman at the Well, as recounted in the Gospel of John, is a powerful testament to the transformative power of grace and compassion. LaJuana's unique approach of storytelling, which she aptly dubs "Inspired Creative Christian Fiction," takes us beyond the mere verses of scripture and into the vivid world she has crafted with care and reverence. Download or read book Beyond the Soundtrack written by Daniel Ira Goldmark and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-06-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking collection by the most distinguished musicologists and film scholars in their fields gives long overdue recognition to music as equal to the image in shaping the experience of film. Refuting the familiar idea that music serves as an unnoticed prop for narrative, these essays demonstrate that music is a fully imagined and active power in the worlds of film. Even where films do give it a supporting role—and many do much more—music makes an independent contribution. Drawing on recent advances in musicology and cinema studies, Beyond the Soundtrack interprets the cinematic representation of music with unprecedented richness. The authors cover a broad range of narrative films, from the "silent" era (not so silent) to the present. Once we think beyond the soundtrack, this volume shows, there is no unheard music in cinema.

Book Synopsis The Power of Oral Culture in Education by : Ardavan Eizadirad
Download or read book The Power of Oral Culture in Education written by Ardavan Eizadirad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-03 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the importance of inter-generational oral culture and stories that transcend time, space, and boundaries transmitted historically from one generation to the next through proverbs, idioms, and folklore tales in different geographical and spatial contexts. These important stories and their embedded life lessons are introduced, explained, and supplemented with pre and post educational activities and lesson plans to be used as learning resources. The centering of orality as a tool and medium for educating the future generation is a reclamation and reaffirmation of Indigeneity, Indigenous knowledges. and non-hegemonic approaches to support students in a socio-culturally sustaining manner. Through this understanding, this book explores the interconnectedness between culture, traditions, language, and way of life through oral storytelling, sharing, and listening.

Book excerpt: The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called "The Man of Property"; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of old days, as they have come down to us in fairy-tale and legend, the folk of the old Sagas were Forsytes, assuredly, in their possessive instincts, and as little proof against the inroads of beauty and passion as Swithin, Soames, or even Young Jolyon. And if heroic figures, in days that never were, seem to startle out from their surroundings in fashion unbecoming to a Forsyte of the Victorian era, we may be sure that tribal instinct was even then the prime force, and that "family" and the sense of home and property counted as they do to this day, for all the recent efforts to "talk them out." So many people have written and claimed that their families were the originals of the Forsytes that one has been almost encouraged to believe in the typicality of an imagined species. Manners change and modes evolve, and "Timothy's on the Bayswater Road" becomes a nest of the unbelievable in all except essentials; we shall not look upon its like again, nor perhaps on such a one as James or Old Jolyon. And yet the figures of Insurance Societies and the utterances of Judges reassure us daily that our earthly paradise is still a rich preserve, where the wild raiders, Beauty and Passion, come stealing in, filching security from beneath our noses. As surely as a dog will bark at a brass band, so will the essential Soames in human nature ever rise up uneasily against the dissolution which hovers round the folds of ownership.
