Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author writes freely and often humorously about his life, beginning with his earliest childhood days. He describes his survival of American bombing raids when he was a teenager in Japan, his emergence as a researcher in a post-war university system that was seriously deficient, and his life as a mature mathematician in Princeton and in the international academic community. Every page of this memoir contains personal observations and striking stories. Such luminaries as Chevalley, Oppenheimer, Siegel, and Weil figure prominently in its anecdotes. Goro Shimura is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Princeton University. In 1996, he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the American Mathematical Society. He is the author of Elementary Dirichlet Series and Modular Forms (Springer 2007), Arithmeticity in the Theory of Automorphic Forms (AMS 2000), and Introduction to the Arithmetic Theory of Automorphic Functions (Princeton University Press 1971).

With this question, participants of a research study were invited to share their experiences of body judgment. As participants described, the body is a carrier of messages and the source of judgmental experiences. Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Gaze, Body Image, Shame, Judgment and Maternal Function: Being and Belonging offers an insightful and engaging psychoanalytical account of experiences of shame and fear of rejection, explained through clinical vignettes and research participants’ scripts. Exploring the findings from the individual and social standpoints, as well as the cultural and historical influences, Dr. Roth proposes that judgements are experienced as attacks, with the meaning attributed to the criticized body part, affecting the sense of self and forming a central point of the participants’ identity trauma. Furthermore, that as guilt requires reparative action, shame requires an act of sacrifice to align the individual to the ideal and to preserve the matrix of belonging, thus explaining the participants’ use of alienation as a defense. This book will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, as well as scholars of culture and religion. Giving a brief introduction to psychoanalytic concepts, with a full glossary, it will also appeal to the non-psychoanalytic reader, interested in body image and how related perceptions and judgements can affect our own sense of Being and Belonging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of autobiographical memory has made dramatic advances since the first collection of papers in the area was published in 1986. Now, over 25 years on, this book reviews and integrates the many theories, perspectives, and approaches that have evolved over the last decades. A truly eminent collection of editors and contributors appraise the basic neural systems of autobiographical memory; its underlying cognitive structures and retrieval processes; how it develops in infancy and childhood, and then breaks down in aging; its social and cultural aspects; and its relation to personality and the self. Autobiographical memory has demonstrated a strong ability to establish clear empirical generalizations, and has shown its practical relevance by deepening our understanding of several clinical disorders - as well as the induction of false memories in the legal system. It has also become an important topic for brain studies, and helped to enlarge our general understanding of the brain.

Book excerpt: This book is comprised of original research and presents for the first time discoveries on the origins of the genetic code of life: the mapping between DNA nucleotides and amino acids. For the first time, a digital communications framework is developed from molecular structures. The chapters include: Discovering the Primer of DNA - The basic discovery process indicating a common structure with the DNA nucleotide pairs, the relationship of steroid hormones to DNA structure, and its correlation to pharmacological efficacy. Encoding DNA - The encoding of a unified complex that will enable both structure and immediate function of DNA; originally synthesized through intermolecular coupling of pairs of pairs of hydrogen bonded steroid structured molecules. Transmitting DNA - The transmission of the encoded complex through the formation of a DNA double helix and steroid molecules which provide access to the information content contained within the double helix. Decoding DNA - The processes of decoding the double helix structure through the function capability provided by the steroid molecules, including decoding tables of an interaction vessel formed by the steroid molecules comprising walls and ceiling. Translating DNA - The mapping of the nucleotide triplet to amino acid is shown through the analysis of the structural and chemical characteristics of the DNA double helix formed in conjunction with the steroid molecules, thereby enabling a code of three nucleotides per amino acid. Example - An example is provided of constructing a protein chain of seven amino acids, including the encoding, transmission, decoding and translation aspects. Replication - Replication of the double helix through the steroid molecules is shown, along with error correction procedures. Genetic rearrangement - Methods of splicing and recombining the DNA structures to form increasingly complex structures. This is intended for the individual who wants to know about the origins of life function, DNA, and the Genetic Codes. As it contains original research, it is not to be used for commercial purposes.
