Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, an ambitious 20 year-old Irish journalist with law and law-reporting experience, arrived in Shrewsbury at 9.15 a.m to join a national press agency, tired and hungry after the night boat from Dublin, two trains, and a six hour wait at Crewe Junction. His new boss shook hands in the office at Shoplatch and sent him back up the town to a divorce court. He bought himself a Mars bar for breakfast. After an hour of taking down the most lubricious evidence he had ever heard, about women's underwear draped over a chair, a man in her bed and his shoes under it, the court rose, the clerk sent the bailiff out for a policeman who took him downstairs to a cell. the constable shut the door. the clerk arrived and offered the prisoner a cigarette, declined. He took off his wig and sat down beside him to ask who he was, who he worked for, where did he come from, and when? the reporter replied - Paddy McGarvey, Bryce Thomas Press Agency in Shoplatch, from Dublin, this morning, and the clerk roared with laughter "You are not allowed to write down evidence in divorce; it is illegal. You should have been told that by your editor. You must wait to hear the judge's summary and decision, to report that if you wish." Resuming his wig, he told the police there would be no charge, and to release him. the clerk told the resumed court he comes only this very this morning from a country which forbids divorce, and the court roared with laughter. His meekly polite employer, Leslie Bryce Thomas, arrived and took him back to the office, on this, his first morning, job, court, day, police cell, in England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Ghassoub, a child from Palestine, who falls in love with the English language and with everything British after meeting a British lady tourist by chance at the Dead Sea, where she teaches him a few English words and treats him well. This incident makes him dream to be something ‘English’ and it plays a significant role in shaping his future as, within a few decades, he rises the ranks to become a professor of English and an author. Ghassoub’s long and tough journey in the English language as a learner and as a teacher offers the reader valuable lessons in some aspects of English language learning and of its complex teaching profession. His dedication and passion for teaching have enabled him to innovate and come up with his own theories that are vital to achieve success and greatness in the teaching profession. This story, which is written in a simple, humorous, sarcastic, and sometimes metaphorical style, is not just a story, but a guide or a self-improvement book for anyone who wants to have a more effective life, a more effective study style, a more effective career, and a deep understanding of the painful process of writing a book.

Book excerpt: On August 22, 1922, near Macroom, County Cork, a single bullet from an unknown gunman killed Michael Collins, the Commander-in-Chief of the Irish Free State Army. The day Collins was buried, businesses across Dublin shut down as thousands lined the streets to pay their respects. And on that day, Michael Lyons, a cooper from the Guinness factory taking advantage of the day off, drowned quietly in Dublin's Royal Canal. In Ireland's Eye, Mark Anthony Jarman uses this confluence -- a famous death and an obscure death -- as the starting point for a meditation on the intertwined history of a nation and his pursuit of the circumstances of his grandfather's drowning. Thwarted by family gossip, aunts who can't drive shift, cousins more interested in pubs than lore, and his own fascination with the many Irelands that have been, Jarman finds what he's seeking despite, or perhaps because of, the antics and the unreliable histories. What he reconfigures is a revelation, and an enchanting and engrossing read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Irish Documentary Theatre is the first anthology of Irish documentary drama. It features five challenging plays by Irish writers, and one by an international author, interrogating and commenting on crucial events of Irish history and of the diaspora, with introductory essays by established academics. Together these plays represent the most innovative development in contemporary Irish theatre and illuminate the social and political realities of contemporary Ireland. The first two plays, of 2010 and 2013, deal with scandals of clerical and institutional abuse, and use as source material the Ryan Report of 2009, and the documents from the 2008 Irish Bank Guarantee. The next two, of 2014 and 2013, concern interpretations of the most iconic moment of Irish history: the Easter Rising. The first of these is based on published statements of participants in the event and the second on the lived experiences of those in the contemporary Republic whose founding ideals have not been realized . The last two plays, of 2015 and 2016, widen the view to the history of the Irish in the diaspora: one retelling the history of emigration to England based on published research material; and the other tracing Roger Casement's experiences in the Amazon and his subsequent participation in the Easter Rising using extracts from his diaries and other writings. The plays included and discussed are: No Escape by Mary Raftery Guaranteed by Colin Murphy Of This Brave Time by Jimmy Murphy History by Grace Dyas My English Tongue, My Irish Heart by Martin Lynch The Two Deaths of Roger Casement by Domingos Nunez

Not only does it foster debate about the reading and interpretation of women's lives, it also explores issues relating to research methodology, and raises questions about the representation of women within feminist auto/biography. Working across a range of subject disciplines, this book comprises a vital and ground-breaking critical text for anyone interested in auto/biography.
