Book excerpt: Shortly after her thirty-seventh birthday, Wall Street Journal reporter and editor Laura Landro was told that she had chronic myelogenous leukemia. Survivor is the remarkable account of her battle against this devastating, potentially fatal cancer -- and her successful struggle to take control of her own case. At first almost paralyzed with fear when diagnosed with this form of blood cancer, Landro resolved to use her journalistic training to seek out the treatment that would give her the best shot at surviving. Noting that most Americans spend more time researching what kind of car to buy than they do their health care, she shows how and why all patients can -- and must -- arm themselves with the facts, learn to understand medical jargon, get doctors to answer all their questions in layman's terms, weigh conflicting medical opinions, and make the difficult choice among the options open to them. Landro's inspiring story offers all readers hope and the know-how to navigate the terrifying and bewildering world of medicine, even when they are very ill and at their most vulnerable.

Book excerpt: Fight Cancer is a true narrative of how morbid cancer has dominated my life in a pervasive manner from changing my vocabulary to almost daily treatment visits. Every cancer narrative hums of inspiring tales of being courageous with anecdotal capture of pain, suffering, endurance, courage, hope and fight because that is a true depiction of a cancer patient's life. How can any story be different? Fear of cancer is linked to mortality and a wake-up call for being on borrowed time. The outstanding group of focused and disciplined stakeholders come equipped with kindness, compassion, programs, services, new treatments and therapies, but they cannot make it go away. My family history has been at war against an aggressive cancer and I have lost several cousins, aunts, uncles including my mother 50 years ago and sister 25 years ago after a fight with this demonic disease...... I ask, are we any further ahead to 50 years ago? I hope this short read will create an awareness and resonate with you. I am a private person publicly sharing my journey in the hope that I can inspire your fight. Medical insights are a task beyond my competence but this personal narrative details various processes, what I learnt, what you should know, how to cope and manage your situation, programs and services available and suggestions to strengthen your spirit.

Book excerpt: Before he died, my husband's last request was that I write a book about our struggle with cancer. In the months preceding his death, I kept a diary of our daily events, taking notes strictly regarding cancer. However, as I began to write the book, I was frequently reminded of his tremendous ability to intertwine humor with the gravity of his disease. My Bob, or Robert E. O'Connor, was a lawyer with a fascinating mind and an unbelievable wit. I supplemented these diary entries with fond memories of our lives together. On December 8, 1980, doctors in Omaha, Nebraska diagnosed Bob with adenocarcinoma with pleural effusion. We flew to Mayo Clinic for a second opinion, and Dr. James R. Jett confirmed the previous diagnosis. Dr. Jett would care for my husband until the end. At the first signs of his illness, Bob attributed the symptoms to possible heart complications, which ran in his family. He never dreamed it could be cancer. We made 16 trips to Mayo Clinic for Chemo treatments and these pages tell the story of the treatments, frustrations, drug side effects, and what we did about each incident. Throughout this time Bob never lost his faith, his hope, or his sense of humor. Agnes O'Connor wrote this first book at the request of her dying husband, Robert E. O'Connor. She tells the story of their daily lives as he battled his last fifteen months of cancer. Using a diary she kept at the time, O'Connor skillfully intertwines fond memories of her husband with the sobering tale of his death. O'Connor illustrates the physical pain, emotional stress, and extreme frustration that come with terminal illness in the hope that others may learn from her experiences. While Robert was aware he had no chance of survival, he fought courageously for every bit of life he could. Robert had been blessed with an exceptional mind and an understated wit, which he retained until the end. He left a magnificent legacy of how to live life to the fullest, and with a devout faith in God, he served as a shining example of perseverance for his children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer: 100 Ways to Fight Your own attitude is your brightest guiding star. Some of success is doing what you like to do. But, more of it is doing the things you don’t like to do, but must. It is too easy to make an excuse, and not do it, and fail. –John Roberts As this book goes to press early in 2010, I am 75 and into my fifth year with incurable metastatic prostate cancer, which had already spread to the bones before cancer was diagnosed and the prostate removed. The statistical prognosis for the current treatments of choice is that one-half of these patients will die within three years, 75% within five. This usually happens after the standard treatments and chemotherapy fail and must be discontinued due to harmful side effects or weakening effectiveness, resumed cancer growth, and the failure of bones or key organs. I am still feeling fine, no pain, living a normal life, and I have completed eight months of chemotherapy with a 63% drop in my PSA (prostate cancer blood test) without major side affects or rising PSA. I have fought this cancer and its personal consequences in more than a hundred ways as described here. Above all, a lifetime of fitness, and my current excellent physical and mental condition, supplemented by great medical care and everything else I can learn or think of, is partially responsible for my success in living beyond the average life span for my particular fatal disease. We cannot know which weapon or how much each one contributes to the extension of life, so we must use them all. The doctors all say that cancer survival is very unpredictable, and I figured that many of the positive outcomes must depend on how comprehensively and how hard the individual fights. So, I immediately started this book and organized my fight. I was extremely unfortunate: most prostate cancer either is so slow growing, or eliminated by removal, that survivors live for many years. In my case, it had already spread, or metastasized, to the bones prior to the operation, and that cancer is inoperable and incurable. But, some people in that condition die very early, while others, like me, live much longer. This is highly unpredictable in individual cases due to variation in patient condition, treatment effectiveness, and other unknowns. More than half of all people newly diagnosed with cancer will be cured or given extended remission. They will die of something else. Of the other half, a large number have treatable cancer and they still have many years to live. The remainder, probably including me, have learned that they have incurable cancer that has grown too strong or spread and taken root in such places that it cannot be killed or removed and death is likely in the next few months or years. Nevertheless, normally incurable cancer and conventional predictability sometimes fail, and others may prolong life by fighting with strong mental and physical effort. As the disease progresses and is treated, and science advances, sometimes in great leaps, we are rarely sure of which group we are in. That uncertainty, that hope, and the dreadful power of cancer, call for great strength of character and effort in both patients and those around them. This book is about that. The animal instinct to survive is, in humans alone, expanded in our unique cortex to something much greater––the intelligent understanding of self-awareness and an intense desire to prolong the experience, growth, and emotion of life. The human spirit, beyond the mere motivation of existence, is largely responsible for all that our species has conquered and achieved. It is an essential quality to be trained, treasured, and put to use, and one of the finest ways is to survive, continue, and improve our exceptional life through our collective and individual intellect. In the last century, medical science, the visibility of living in distant years, and the recognition that we are, and can be, responsible for increasing our own longevity have ad
