Book excerpt: While there are many areas of controversy in the world of nutrition, there is unequivocal evidence that breast milk is best to feed our babies. In Australia the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) recently updated their advice after reviewing the scientific research. They now recommend exclusive breastfeeding to around 6 months of age and continuing to breastfeed alongside complementary foods until the baby is 12 months of age and longer if both mum and baby wish. Unfortunately we are not achieving anywhere near these recommendations. Although we have excellent rates of mums initiating breastfeeding after birth with 96% choosing to do so, this falls away dramatically in the first few months. By 3 months of age only 39% of babies are still being exclusively breastfed, and by 5 months only 15%. There are a number of reasons why this may occur. Mothers returning to work, lack of support in dealing with problems breastfeeding, concerns over whether the baby has enough milk, wanting others to be able to feed the baby, and a lack of confidence to breast feed, especially in public, have all been cited as reasons to cease breastfeeding. In some cases there is also a lack of understanding as to the benefits of breastfeeding for both mum and baby and so the motivation to continue doing so may dwindle. That is where this fantastic book from Rowena Gray comes in. Not only does she expertly explain the science and physiology of breastfeeding, clearly outlining the many benefits, she packs in all of the practical information a new mum needs to know. Every conceivable problem is covered with potential solutions and direction given as to where to seek further help when necessary. I have no doubt that this will fast become the feeding bible for all new mums and I sincerely hope the end result is far more babies reaping the benefits of nature's truly amazing first food.

Book excerpt: When breastfeeding does not go as hoped, mothers often have feelings of loss, sadness, anger, fear, failure, guilt and self-blame. Mothers then say they are heart-broken, crushed, and even devastated. These painful emotions double a mother's risk for postpartum depression. Yet, our healthcare system does not have guidelines in place to help mothers prevent the escalating emotions of Breastfeeding Grief. We have no "plan B" which guides mothers to promote optimal bonding when their breastfeeding goals are not met. And our mental health experts do not understand how to guide mothers in their emotional healing, so mothers can fully enjoy their baby with renewed confidence. Hilary Jacobson, author of "Mother Food: A Breastfeeding Diet Guide with Lactogenic Foods and Herbs" is a holistic breastfeeding specialist and clinical hypnotherapist. Her easy-to-read book "Healing Breastfeeding Grief" contains the essential information mothers need to navigate their way back into a positive sense of self, and an intimate connection and bond with their baby.

Book excerpt: What could toddlers be thinking and feeling as they wean from breastfeeding? Depending on age and development, some might not be able to express what they think and feel with words. In My Milk Will Go, Our Love Will Grow, we hear a toddler's questions and feelings during an honest conversation between mother and child. This heartwarming book uses rhyme, short sentences, and beautiful illustrations to convey a message of love and reassurance as the child learns that mother will still nurture and meet both physical and emotional needs when breastfeeding ends. This book will be a special keepsake for both mothers and children, showing the beauty of the nursing relationship. Weaning can be difficult with or without a children's book about weaning. However, the stress of weaning can be lessened when mothers have a resource to help toddlers acknowledge and understand this significant transition. The book was written to help mothers talk to toddlers about weaning. It can be helpful during the weaning process, and it can help newly weaned toddlers and toddlers with a new nursing sibling. All mothers who have breastfed a baby may want to have this book to represent the beautiful nurturing they offered their children. My Milk Will Go, Our Love Will Grow was written in rhyme, making it a unique weaning book. It can be used as a helpful tool to assist toddlers, and, as a special keepsake for mothers and their children. It has 38 pages, each with illustrations by Sheila Fein.
