Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its inception in Greek antiquity, the science of optics was aimed primarily at explaining sight and accounting for why things look as they do. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the analytic focus of optics had shifted to light: its fundamental properties and such physical behaviors as reflection, refraction, and diffraction. This dramatic shift—which A. Mark Smith characterizes as the “Keplerian turn”—lies at the heart of this fascinating and pioneering study. Breaking from previous scholarship that sees Johannes Kepler as the culmination of a long-evolving optical tradition that traced back to Greek antiquity via the Muslim Middle Ages, Smith presents Kepler instead as marking a rupture with this tradition, arguing that his theory of retinal imaging, which was published in 1604, was instrumental in prompting the turn from sight to light. Kepler’s new theory of sight, Smith reveals, thus takes on true historical significance: by treating the eye as a mere light-focusing device rather than an image-producing instrument—as traditionally understood—Kepler’s account of retinal imaging helped spur the shift in analytic focus that eventually led to modern optics. A sweeping survey, From Sight to Light is poised to become the standard reference for historians of optics as well as those interested more broadly in the history of science, the history of art, and cultural and intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Common Words in Muslim-Christian Dialogue Vebjørn L. Horsfjord offers an analysis of texts from an international dialogue process between Christian and Muslim leaders. Through detailed engagement with the Muslim dialogue letter A Common Word between Us and You (2007) and a large number of Christian responses to it, the study analyses the dialogue process in the wake of the Muslim initiative and shows how the various texts gain meaning through their interaction. The author uses tools from critical discourse analysis and speech act analysis and claims that the Islamic dialogue initiative became more important as an invitation to Muslim-Christian dialogue than as theological reflection. He shows how Christian leaders systematically chose to steer the dialogue process towards practical questions about peaceful coexistence and away from theological issues.

Book excerpt: This is the first monograph-length volume entirely devoted to the theoretical and empirical issues raised by the definition of ‘word’ and related concepts in Arabic, both at the historical and synchronic level. Some of the best-known scholars in the field of Arabic linguistics debate such issues as the technical definition of words and morphemes in the Arabic grammatical and rhetorical traditions, the theoretical status of the root and its interactions with morphology, the analysis of word in the computer treatment of Arabic texts, some relevant phenomena in the contact of Arabic with other languages. The result is a fresh portrait of some of the most interesting research currently under way in Arabic linguistics from different theoretical and methodological viewpoints.

Book excerpt: This book examines the works of Medieval Muslim philosophers interested in intercultural encounters and how receptive Islam is to foreign thought, to serve as a dialogical model, grounded in intercultural communications, for Islamic and Arabic education. The philosophers studied in this project were instructors, tutors, or teachers, such as Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi, Al-Ghazali, and Averroes, whose philosophical contributions directly or indirectly advanced intercultural learning. The book describes and provides examples of how each of these philosophers engaged with intercultural encounters, and asks how their philosophies can contribute to infusing intercultural ethics and practices into curriculum theorizing. First, it explores selected works of medieval Muslim philosophers from an intercultural perspective to formulate a dialogical paradigm that informs and enriches Muslim education. Second, it frames intercultural education as a catalyst to guide Muslim communities’ interactions and identity construction, encouraging flexibility, tolerance, deliberation, and plurality. Third, it bridges the gap between medieval tradition and modern thought by promoting interdisciplinary connections and redrawing intercultural boundaries outside disciplinary limits. This study demonstrates that the dialogical domain that guides intercultural contact becomes a curriculum-oriented structure with Al-Kindi, a tripartite pedagogical model with Al-Fārābī, a sojourner experience with Al-Ghazali, and a deliberative pedagogy of alternatives with Averroes. Therefore, the book speaks to readers interested in the potential of dialogue in education, intercultural communication, and Islamic thought research. Crucially bridging the gap between medieval tradition and modern thought by promoting interdisciplinary connections and redrawing intercultural boundaries outside disciplinary limits, it will speak to readers interested in the dialogue between education, intercultural communication, and Islamic thought. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary is an aid to the readers of Islamic academic works that are in Arabic. It includes most of the terminologies that are in usage to dwell with the Arabic Language. As a firm believer in the concept of speaking of languages, I found it extremely difficult to find any work's in Arabic, which are produced to meet the requirements of the non-native speakers of the Arabic language. Although works done in the past have covered the field of Islamic philosophy, like the "Qamoos Al Falsifah Al Islamiyah" and other compilers have done a great service to the cause, but these works are focused from a scholarly approach to the Arabic Language. This work is different in nature and does not include the Arabized names of the English Language terms such as algebra, cat and coffee. At times it only includes the Arabic terms of the nature of modern day usage and little else, as very little is known about them. Previously, the Arabic dictionary compilations have been based on philosophers and ideas that were erroneously attributed by the philosophers who worked in Arabic -Muslim and non-Muslim- and that is brought to light by including such terms used as per this era. Hence this work has been titled "Qamoos Al Arabiyahtuh Bayna Yadaik" (Arabic Lexicon in your posession) and is based on the work by a Researcher who considers himself a moral servant of Islam and a humble slave of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taa'laa. This work was researched, compiled and produced during my memorable stay of two years in Malaysia. The "Qamoos Al Arabiyahtuh Bayna Yadaik" primarily focuses on the needs of non-native speakers, writers and students of the Arabic Language. The need of such a work was realized by the compiler, on several occasions during interactions with the sophisticated student body of "The International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC)" located at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This dictionary will Insha'Allah be a first hand guide to all the students of knowledge, who desire to make Arabic a language of daily usage. At this juncture, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for Professor Dr. Sayyid Ajmal M. Razzak Al-Aidrus, whose passion, enthusiasm and love for the Arabic language, inspired me to compile this dictionary. A word of appreciation for Professor Dr.Hassan Naqar, whose Arabic skills help me a lot in researching on this topic. Last but not least, my applause to Professor Amir Hossein Zekrgoo in making me realize the importance of bilingualism during the course of my study at ISTAC.In the end, I would like to dedicate this work to the gallant student community of ISTAC. The hard work, dedication and sincerity employed by my colleagues in propagating the Islamic Contemporary Thought are phenomenal. I salute them for their meritorious contributions to this field. The love, affection and dedication bestowed on me during my stay by the multi lingual, cross cultural student body of ISTAC became the edifice of my work.Whatever good is being produced in this work is from Allah Subhanahu Wa Taa'laa, and whatever evil got developed is from the inner most evils of myself. May Allah Rab Ul Izzat, accept this humble effort from His incapable slave. I hope this will be an extremely beneficial data, especially for those who have a flare for learning Arabic. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Taa'laa, make all of us benefit from this data.Aa'meen. May this work act as a means of protection from the Hell fire for all those who participated, in compiling, publishing and distributing this work. Allahuma Aa'meen. Irfan Bin Sarwar Ali Thanvi, Kuala Lumpur: Friday, the 28th of Shawwal 1430 Hijrah.
