It shows how, in recent years, music therapy has changed and grown as a profession, and it provides an insight into the trends that are emerging in this area in the 21st century. Collating the experiences of a range of music therapists from both mainstream and special education backgrounds, Music Therapy in Schools explains the procedures, challenges and benefits of using music therapy in an educational context. These music therapists have worked with children of all ages and abilities from pre-school toddlers in nursery schools to teenagers preparing for further education, and address specific issues and disabilities including working with children with emotional and behavioural problems, and autistic spectrum disorders. This book will be essential reading for music therapists, music therapy students and educational professionals.

This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music therapy has been researched and found to have a calming relaxing effect on students who fear large crowds, especially in classrooms. Music therapy has been proven to have a calming effect on those students who display signs of distress, or who have been diagnosed with psychological or physiological disorders. Some students show stress when taking tests. Research has proven that music significantly reduces stressful behaviors in these students. Background music has proven to have a positive effect on students who are assigned to inclusion classes. Music has been used as an effective intervention for maintaining and improving active involvement, social, emotional and cognitive skills. Music therapy has had positive effects on these students who deal with psychological stressors or physiological complications. Thus, it has been researched and proven that students who receive music therapy over a long period of time have a success rate that is higher than those students who receive music therapy over a shorter period. Long-term music therapy indicates that music sessions were most effective in increasing self-control, relaxation and comfort levels inside the classroom, allowing more time for teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Music to Students with Autism is a comprehensive practical guide for music educators who work with students with autism. Authors and veteran music educators Alice M. Hammel and Ryan M. Hourigan offer an approach centered in inclusion designed for music educators, music teacher educators, and all those who have an interest in the education of students with autism. In this second edition, the authors offer fully up-to-date information on the diagnosis of autism, advocating for students and music programs, and creating and maintaining a team-approach when working with colleagues. A significant portion of the book is focused on understanding the communication, cognition, behavior, sensory, and socialization challenges inherent in students with autism and ways to structure classroom experiences and learning opportunities for all students. A chapter of classroom snapshots (vignettes) written by teachers in the field of music education provides additional opportunities to transfer information to 'real life' situations. Finally, the book offers a chapter of print and web resources for further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book includes relevant medical, psychological, and developmental information to help service providers and parents to understand children with disabilities. In this revised edition, the author has updated or eliminated some of the medical information and added more related music therapy literature. This book can be used as a valuable handbook for clinicians. Also, it may be used as a primary or supplemental textbook in classes to prepare music therapy students to work with children who have disabilities. All music therapy students who complete an undergraduate curriculum should know the characteristics and common needs of the major disabilities discussed in this book. In addition, class work and clinical experiences must include basic techniques and materials used to accomplish the goals and objectives set for each child. This is addressed in a manner that will be useful to all personnel working with children with disabilities. The first two chapters describe the process of assessment and delineation of goals in music therapy, which leads to the design of the music therapy portion of the IEP or care plan. Subsequent evaluation allows progress to be stated objectively. The remaining chapters describe each population of children to be served, with emphasis on medical and psychological characteristics unique to each population, and specific goals and procedures to be used in music therapy. The CAMEOS model is used in this book to address the child’s Communication, Academic, Motor, Emotional, Organizational, and Social needs and ways these may be addressed through music therapy. Whether the child is homebound, included in regular classes, seen in a resource room or special education program, or in hospital care, he/she has needs that can be described within the CAMEOS model. Music therapy may provide service in each of these areas.

Music has been shown to unlock doors in the minds of students and patients in ways that nothing else can. When music is introduced into the classroom it can affect everything from mood and behavior to concentration and memory. Music can be used as a tool to reach students with language disabilities or communication disorders. In a time when music education is being taken out of schools due to lack of funding, this meta-synthesis identifies the need for additional access to music and its profound effect on those exposed to it.
