Make no mistake about it, education is big business and, like other big businesses, it is in big trouble. -Professor Mark C. Taylor, Columbia University, New York Times, Opinion, July 12, 2009. A young, salt-of-the-earth family is caught up in a cyclone of greed, after Dennis Winecoop accepts a position at Washington, D.C.'s Utopia University. Believing he was hired to advise graduate students in history, Professor Winecoop finds he is teaching a full schedule of Murder 101. The first lesson, it seems, occurred just days before he was hired, when his predecessor was found grotesquely murdered in his bath. The intrigues of multiple murders are the catalysts that drive this dynamic and compelling tale to a shocking conclusion. The events and characters of Murder Cum Laude reveal the ugly reality of Washington politics and one man's aggressive efforts to uncover the truth. A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, author Bruce Zortman served as a top secret courier during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded a one-year Taussig Fellowship to the Free University in Berlin. As an NDEA Fellow, he earned his PhD with distinction from UCLA. His 25 years as a professional educator include positions at Santa Monica College and American University in Washington, D.C. He is the author of Hitler's Theater (1985), an acting textbook, scholarly articles and several produced plays. Presently, he is Commodore of the Tucson Sailing Club. Book excerpt: The first story I remember writing for public dissemination was something called. "The Day the Gravity Left the Earth". I think I was nine or ten. Well, gravity never did leave the earth, but my imagination certainly did. It hasn't been entirely grounded since. Of course, somewhere on my way to becoming an adult I realized that Imagination alone wouldn't pay the bills and I wound up doing a lot of things that would. Some were ordinary. Some were less than ordinary. Some were just bizarre. There was a four-year stint in the Air Force, where I worked on base newspapers. Then I attended the University of South Florida where I graduated cum laude with a degree in journalism. I wrote for the St. Petersburg Times and the Tampa Tribune, and became an editor. My focus was mostly on the murder and mayhem side of the business. It wore thin. Somehow I parlayed my hard-core news experience into a staff position with a children's book publishing company. That satisfied me for a good chunk of time and it certainly rekindled the imaginative side of me, but when the company's fortunes sagged, I segued into freelance work. Along the way, I wrote stories -- stories that were long enough to qualify as bona fide novels, like In The Spirit of Murder.

Sergeant Cass Hasty and his partner Barney Stauffer were supposed to go to Sand Head Island to pick up a low level criminal by the name of Tootie McNiff. But when they get there, McNiff has escaped and they find themselves embroiled in the investigation of two tourists blown apart at a beach barbecue. The island has plenty of characters, most of whom are suspects, including a dancer with matrimony on her mind and a violent maniac with a habit of wandering away from the sanitarium as well as an assortment of rich drunks. Hasty's efforts to solve the crime before too many bodies pile up are complicated by the arrival of four Feds more interested in publicity than justice, and not only must he find the murderer, he must determine what the murder weapon was before he can solve the Cabana Murders.

Book excerpt: All is far from quiet on the home front in USA Today bestselling author Anna Lee Huber’s captivating mystery series, in which former Secret Service agent Verity Kent receives a visitor—who is being trailed by a killer . . . November 1919.A relaxing few weeks by the seaside with her husband, Sidney, could almost convince Verity Kent that life has returned to the pleasant rhythm of pre-war days. Then Verity’s beloved Great-Aunt Ilse lands on their doorstep. After years in war-ravaged Germany, Ilse has returned to England to repair her fragile health—and to escape trouble. Someone has been sending her anonymous threats, and Verity’s Secret Service contacts can only provide unsettling answers. Even deep in the Yorkshire Dales, where she joins Verity’s family for the holidays, Ilse encounters difficulties. Normally peaceful neighbors are hostile, seeking someone to blame for the losses they’ve endured. When Ilse’s maid is found dead, Verity must uncover whether this is anti-German sentiment taken to murderous lengths, or whether there is a more personal motive at work. Could Verity’s shadowy nemesis, Lord Ardmore, be involved? And if so, how much closer to home will the blow land when he inevitably strikes again? “…A treat for WWI buffs and the legion of fans who have grown fond of Verity.” —Publishers Weekly Praise for Anna Lee Huber’s Penny for Your Secrets “A historical mystery to delight fans of Agatha Christie or Daphne du Maurier.” —Bookpage “Stellar mystery . . . a great read for fans of the series and all who enjoyDownton Abbey-era fiction.” —Booklist

Book excerpt: #1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Splendid and the Vile comes the true tale of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and the cunning serial killer who used the magic and majesty of the fair to lure his victims to their death. “As absorbing a piece of popular history as one will ever hope to find.” —San Francisco Chronicle Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction. Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds—a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium. Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake. The Devil in the White City draws the reader into the enchantment of the Guilded Age, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.

She had been in court, fighting with the National Park Service, which was trying to take her family's four-hundred-acre cherry orchard for the new national park. Burr Lafayette, recently divorced and the deposed head of a major Detroit law firm, had kept the Park Service at bay for seven years. But now Helen's husband, Tommy, is arrested for her murder. It seems he had been trying to sell the orchards to the Park Service ever since Helen went missing. All of the evidence points to Tommy, but there's no shortage of suspects. A man at loose ends, Burr is a brilliant litigator who prefers sailboats and dogs over courtrooms and clients. He's not a criminal lawyer, but he's convinced there is a clue somewhere that will unlock the truth.

Book excerpt: For every author whose manuscript gets published, there are tens of thousands who are rejected. At literary agencies and publishing houses, screeners go through piles of submissions, searching for original voices, attention-grabbing characters, and writing styles that rise above the rest. The piles are large; time is short. The writer who has labored a year or more on a story may have only a page, a paragraph, or a sentence read before the screener moves on to the next submission. It is this heartbreaking reality that the author (who is also an editor and writing teacher) addresses in this helpful book. Pitched midway between the writing advice books that concentrate on format and grammar and those that outline the large-bone mystery basics such as plot, character, dialogue, and creating suspense, Don't Murder Your Mystery identifies twenty-four aspects of the mystery novel, some dealing with the nitty-gritty of submissions but most discussing topics to help inexperienced writers improve the quality of their written work. Roerden's pitch is to help new writers identify and correct pedestrian mistakes and avoid amateurish writing, so they won't be quickly dismissed by screeners. What she has created is an essential handbook for writers longing to improve their knowledge of craft and technique.

This new evidence is being uncovered by the bold application of scientific and technological expertise to the assassination records, including the film, photographic, and autopsy records. Murder in Dealey Plaza presents the latest and best of the new assassination research. As a result of these freshly uncovered findings, it is possible to say with moral certainty and considerable scientific authority that the murder of President Kennedy was committed by a meticulously executed conspiracy which was then observed by an extensive cover-up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brutal Murder The upscale suburb of Wellesley, Massachusetts hadn't seen a murder in 30 years. Then came Halloween, 1999. That brisk morning, Dr. Dirk Greineder, 60, and his wife of 32 years, Mabel, took one of their dogs for a walk in Morses Pond park. A short time later, Dr. Greineder led police to the corpse of his wife. She'd been bludgeoned, stabbed and her throat slashed. Her husband claimed an unknown assailant had committed the act--possibly the same person responsible for two unsolved murders in nearby towns. A Double Life Dirk Greineder was a well-respected allergist whose home was valued at half a million dollars. He and Mabel had raised three children, who had all attended Yale, like their father. But the "good" doctor also indulged in a secret life involving phone sex, Internet porn, and motel trysts with prostitutes. A Family Destroyed A dogged investigation finally yielded enough evidence to lead to Greineder's arrest, and in a six-week trial that would make national headlines, he was supported by his three children, while the dead woman's sister and niece testified for the prosecution. There in the courtroom, a jury would learn the grisly details of cold-blooded murder. . .and the community of Wellesley would learn that you never really know your neighbors. . . 16 Pages Of Shocking Photos
