Book excerpt: The focus of this thesis is on blind identification techniques for multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) systems. In this respect we study three problems: (1) & nbsp; The joint diagonalization problem. Joint diagonalization is an efficient tool for blind identification techniques for MIMO systems. In this thesis we discuss new adaptive joint orthogonal diagonalization algorithms based on optimization methods over the Stiefel manifold. (2) & nbsp;Blind identification of MIMO systems. We demonstrate that by using the second-oder statistics of the system outputs, by exploiting the non-stationarity of sources, and some mild conditions on the sources and the system, the impulse response of the MIMO system can be identified up to an inherent scaling and permutation ambiguity. An efficient two-step frequency domain algorithm for identifying the MIMO system then has been proposed. Numerical simulations verify the theoretical results and the performance of the new algorithm. (3) & nbsp; Real room blind source separation problem. The final part of the thesis focuses on the practical problem of blind source separation of mixed audio signals in a real room. The new proposed algorithm exploits the non-stationarity of audio signals to separate them from their mixtures recorded in a reverberant environment. This method has successfully been applied to real data acquired during extensive recording experiments done in different office rooms on the McMaster campus.

Book excerpt: The success of blind source separation systems relies on its ability to handle adverse realworld conditions, and audio applications of blind source separation systems are often faced with the cocktail party problem of multiple simultaneously active speakers. The convolutive nature of the mixing of the source signals and the relative number of the microphones and source signals also add to the difficulty of the blind source separation problem. This thesis focuses on the sparseness-based time-frequency masking approach for under-determined blind source separation. In particular, we direct our attention upon the automatic estimation of time-frequency masks based on the full-band clustering of spatial features as extracted from the microphone observations. We explore recent advances of full-band clustering-based techniques to blind source separation and investigate and extend an existing technique termed the multiple sensors degenerate unmixing estimation technique (MENUET). We modify the MENUET by using an alternative clustering scheme for mask estimation, the fuzzy c-means, and present comprehensive evaluations in a range of environments to establish its feasibility. We then explore two extensions to the fuzzy c-means: firstly, the estimation of reliability weights for the spatial features, and secondly the inclusion of contextual information into the clustering objective function. This thesis also investigates other full-band clustering techniques such as the Gaussian mixture model and Watson mixture model for mask estimation. We evaluate and compare the performance of all the full-band clustering techniques in this thesis, and conclusions are drawn as to which are the most robust for a variety of both simulated and real-world conditions, including international benchmark data sets. Finally, to remove any requirement on a priori knowledge on the number of source signals, we consider two novel approaches to source number estimation. The first uses an adaptive optimization scheme based on the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm, whilst the second approach considers the full-band clustering of speech activity sequences with the Watson mixture model.

The optimal design of these blocks is typically formulated as an optimization problem with a certain objective function, and a given constraint set. However, besides the objective function and the constraint set, their optimal design crucially depends upon the adopted system model and the assumed system state. While, optimization under a perfect knowledge of these underlying parameters (system model and state) is relatively straight forward and well explored, the optimization under their imperfect (partial or uncertain) knowledge is more involved and cumbersome. Intuitively, the central question that arises here is: should we fully trust the available imperfect knowledge of the underlying parameters, should we just ignore it, or should we go for an “intermediate” approach? This thesis deals with three crucial transceiver design problems from a signal processing for communications perspective, and attempts to answer the fundamental question of how to handle the presence of uncertainty about the design parameters in the respective optimization problem formulations.

ICIAR will be organized annually, and will alternate between Europe and North America. ICIAR 2005 will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainly between these two countries, but also with the open participation of other countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. The response to the call for papers for ICIAR 2004 was very positive. From 316 full papers submitted, 210 were accepted (97 oral presentations, and 113 - sters). The review process was carried out by the Program Committee members and other reviewers; all are experts in various image analysis and recognition areas. Each paper was reviewed by at least two reviewing parties. The high q- lity of the papers in these proceedings is attributed ?rst to the authors, and second to the quality of the reviews provided by the experts.
