As the size of [an] affected area increases, there are grounds to suspect that the effective pressure on that area decreases. This size effect on ice strength has not been well defined, if in fact it exists, and it is the aim of this program to obtain data providing a means of quantifying it. As well, it was sought to verify a theory describing the mechanism of ice compression failure against a structure (Reference 10). Thus at the request of Gulf Canada, GEOTECH conducted a field testing program on a land-fast multi-year flow off of the south coast of Bernard Island to determine local ice pressures on structures for design. In situ strength tests were done using flatjacks of varying size and shape. These tests are described in Section 2.0 and 3.0 of the report. The test results are analysed in Section 4.0. Conventional shallow pit "flaking" tests were also done using a stiff plate and ram system. 100 mm diameter cores were taken using a CRREL type core barrel. The drill holes were tested with a borehole jack by Fenco Consultants Ltd., and were temperature profiled"--ASTIS database.

Book excerpt: This report presents the first series of conventional triaxial tests carried out on columnar first year sea ice samples obtained from the field and tested under controlled laboratory conditions using a large-capacity test machine. A total of 110 horizontal ice samples from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, were tested on a closed-loop electro-hydraulic test machine at -10 C in unconfined and confined constant-strain-rate compression. The confined tests were conducted in a conventional triaxial cell that maintained a constant ratio between the radial and axial stress to simulate in situ loading conditions. The load ratios used were 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75. The strain rate of each test was constant at 0.01, 0.001, or 0.00001/s. Data are presented on the strength, failure strain and initial tangent modulus of the first year sea ice under these loading conditions. The effects of confining pressure, strain rate and ice structure on the mechanical properties of the ice are examined.

Book excerpt: A method has been developed for making a dogbone- or dumbbell-shaped specimen with a uniform gauge section made of any natural ice to be tested in tension. The specimen ends are made of built-up ice and the cross-sectional geometry is compatible with the grain structure of the ice. The gauge section is large enough to contain a sufficient number of grains to avoid any geometric effect and to mount the displacement gauge for conducting tests under closed-loop controlled constant strain rates. The application of the technique is illustrated by examples of test results on columnar-rained sea ice obtained from a multi-year floe in the High Arctic in the form of 300 mm diameter cores. The paper also describes methods of carrying out post-test microstructural analysis.
