Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel adaptive semiblind multiuser detector based on subspace tracking is proposed for CDMA systems. A comparison of blind and semiblind multiuser detectors is also presented. Blind multiuser detectors consider only the in-cell users and neglect the inter-cell interference from out-of-cell users while semiblind multiuser detectors take into account both, intra-cell and inter-cell interference. Semiblind multiuser detectors are superior to blind multiuser detectors when the codes of some users are known to a base station e.g., codes of in-cell users Vs. out-of-cell users. It is shown that using the proposed semiblind detector, a considerable improvement in the capacity of the system is achieved. Compared to the existing blind and semiblind multiuser detectors, the proposed semiblind detector exhibits faster convergence, and is more robust in the case when the system is heavily loaded. It is also computationally less expensive.

Book excerpt: The work begins with a study of several most frequently referred to sub-optimal multiuser receivers. The four structures of interest are the decorrelator, the minimum mean square error receiver, the multistage parallel interference cancellation receiver, and the successive interference cancellation receiver. The performance of the receiver structures is compared through simulation studies on the basis of bit error rate in additive white Gaussian noise, and near-far channels. In the second part of this research, array processing techniques are investigated as a means for improving the performance. We evaluate the system performance of some of the existing adaptive blind array schemes for CDMA receivers, and a new adaptive blind algorithm is derived. The knowledge of the desired user's signature sequence is exploited to design the blind receiver, where no training sequence needs to be transmitted. The blind algorithm is formulated using a constrained energy minimization criterion, and adaptation is carried out by using the LMS algorithm combined with the gradient-projection algorithm to incorporate the quadratic constraint. The multiple access interference coming from the directions other than that of the desired user can be significantly suppressed by using spatial filtering property of antenna arrays. The interference rejection capability of the proposed receiver is examined in situations where a single interferer dominates the received power. It is shown that this combination can significantly improve the system performance and outperform all existing multiuser detectors as well as smart antenna systems. Finally, we present a new structure combining two-dimensional RAKE receiver and the multiuser detection for further enhancement of the system performance in multipath fading channels.

Book excerpt: The inadequacy of the conventional Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) receivers in a multiple access interference-limited mobile radio environment has spurred research on advanced receiver technologies. This research investigates the use of adaptive receivers for multi-user detection to overcome some of the deficiencies of a conventional receiver and, hence, suppress the multiple access interference (MAI) and narrow band interference (NBI) in DS/CDMA wireless systems. The MAI is a major factor influencing the communication quality and the capacity in CDMA wireless systems. Hence, suppression of MAI and NBI are essential for an efficient performance of a CDMA wireless system and to enhance the system capacity. Analysis of the conventional detector and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detector is carried out to provide a better understanding of the effect of the channel parameters on the performance of the detectors and to explain the near-far resilience of the receiver. The performance of these detectors are compared and analyzed. The derivation of the relationship between the minimum mean-squared error detector and minimum output energy (MOE) detector is developed in order to provide an adaptive implementation of the later. The limitation of the existing RLS blind algorithms for MMSE detector in AWGN channels is analyzed. In order to improve the performance of the existing schemes and to eliminate the requirement of training sequences, a scheme combining the blind adaptation and MAI cancellation is proposed. The performance of this algorithm is analyzed and compared with the existing schemes. Extensive simulations have been carried out to demonstrate that the proposed scheme is more reliable and it provides an effective resilience to the environment changes.

This book was released on 2005-01-28 with total page 1014 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a method of digital modulation in which a signal is split into several narrowband channels at different frequencies. CDMA is a form of multiplexing, which allows numerous signals to occupy a single transmission channel, optimising the use of available bandwidth. Multiplexing is sending multiple signals or streams of information on a carrier at the same time in the form of a single, complex signal and then recovering the separate signals at the receiving end. Multi-Carrier (MC) CDMA is a combined technique of Direct Sequence (DS) CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and OFDM techniques. It applies spreading sequences in the frequency domain. Wireless communications has witnessed a tremendous growth during the past decade and further spectacular enabling technology advances are expected in an effort to render ubiquitous wireless connectivity a reality. This technical in-depth book is unique in its detailed exposure of OFDM, MIMO-OFDM and MC-CDMA. A further attraction of the joint treatment of these topics is that it allows the reader to view their design trade-offs in a comparative context. Divided into three main parts: Part I provides a detailed exposure of OFDM designed for employment in various applications Part II is another design alternative applicable in the context of OFDM systems where the channel quality fluctuations observed are averaged out with the aid of frequency-domain spreading codes, which leads to the concept of MC-CDMA Part III discusses how to employ multiple antennas at the base station for the sake of supporting multiple users in the uplink Portrays the entire body of knowledge currently available on OFDM Provides the first complete treatment of OFDM, MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output)-OFDM and MC-CDMA Considers the benefits of channel coding and space time coding in the context of various application examples and features numerous complete system design examples Converts the lessons of Shannon’s information theory into design principles applicable to practical wireless systems Combines the benefits of a textbook with a research monograph where the depth of discussions progressively increase throughout the book This all-encompassing self-contained treatment will appeal to researchers, postgraduate students and academics, practising research and development engineers working for wireless communications and computer networking companies and senior undergraduate students and technical managers.

Book excerpt: In a limited network resource, techniques are needed to share the channel among different users as efficiently and as fairly as possible. Among multiple access techniques; Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) has the exclusive advantage of allowing all active users share the same channel concurrently. When CDMA technique is used, Multi User Detection (MUD) is needed to reject or reduce the Multiple Access Interference (MAI) affecting each active user. In this thesis, it is shown that multiuser detection using Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) technique provides a good compromise among the complexity, latency, and performance. This technique is suitable for Digital Video Broadcasting-Return Channel via Satellite (DVB-RSC) as well as Base Station (BS) in cellular communication systems. We offer a new scheme that is a combination of soft and hard PIC detectors whose performance is superior to that of the other famous sub-optimal detectors. For most MUD schemes, a perfect knowledge of users' parameters is required. In this thesis, we apply a very simple method to estimate the parameters. PIC detectors are usually studied in equal-power case, i.e., a perfect power control scheme is assumed. We study PIC detector in near-far condition as well, where users arrive at receiver with different power levels. It is shown that our proposed scheme has some advantages over other schemes. First, it is much less complex than optimal and linear detectors. Second, it is much faster than sequential detector. Third, it has better performance than that of linear detectors.
