Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lesson of "MULE SCHOOL" MULE SCHOOL is a poem with a message that applies to both grown-ups and children. The poem is about a boy name Toby and his mule Elmer. However, within the verses there is a deeper meaning. The poem shows how the boy and his mule must learn certain rules in order to plow the desired "Nice Straight Row." That's not too different than what happens to us in our daily lives. The message in the poem is clear. We, too, as individuals, must learn the rules that keep us on a straight path toward achieving our own goal of having a happy, and fulfilling life. When the author wrote the poem, he was thinking of young people, especially TEENAGERS, who at a very early age, are often faced with choices. In our modern society there are many temptations and a bad choice can be life changing. When a young person reads this poem, he or she, should think about the direction their own life is taking. Or, if a PARENT or GRANDPARENT is reading this poem to a child, they should point out to them the merits of making the right choices and the consequences of making the wrong choices. Tell your child to always remember the message of "Mule School." That message is simple. As you go through life keep asking yourself this all "" important question: "Am I plowing a "straight" row, or am I wandering?" ENJOY "MULE SCHOOL"

Maybe nobody gave freedom, and nobody could take it away like they could take away a family farm. Maybe freedom was something you claimed for yourself. Like other ex-slaves, Pascal and his older brother Gideon have been promised forty acres and maybe a mule. With the found family they have built along the way, they claim a place of their own. Green Gloryland is the most wonderful place on earth, their own farm with a healthy cotton crop and plenty to eat. But the notorious night riders have plans to take it away, threatening to tear the beautiful freedom that the two boys are enjoying for the first time in their young lives.

An intergenerational story filled with heart and soul.” — Kirkus Reviews When Alex spies a mule chomping on greens in a nearby garden, he can’t help but ask about it. “Ol’ Belle?” says Miz Pettway. “She can have all the collards she wants. She’s earned it.” And so begins the tale of an ordinary mule in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, that played a singular part in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. When African-Americans in a poor community — inspired by a visit from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — defied local authorities who were trying to stop them from registering to vote, many got around a long, imposed detour on mule-drawn wagons. As Alex looks into the eyes of gentle Belle, he begins to understand a significant time in history in a very personal way.

Book excerpt: Political scientists and social choice theorists often assume that economic diversification within a group produces divergent political beliefs and behaviors. Michael Dawson demonstrates, however, that the growth of a black middle class has left race as the dominant influence on African- American politics. Why have African Americans remained so united in most of their political attitudes? To account for this phenomenon, Dawson develops a new theory of group interests that emphasizes perceptions of "linked fates" and black economic subordination.

An eschewing of what is manmade and crowded and impersonal. Comradeship, sports, and competition. Beautiful unfulfilled mothers, the difficult communication of fathers and sons. William Walsh's FLY FISHING IN TIMES SQUARE is a love letter to Americana, a love letter to America. Each of these exacting, spectacular poems come around the corner like long lost friends to kiss each reader on the cheek."--Denise Duhamel "William Walsh's new poems prove, once again, that 'there's no controlling the world's divine mysteries. With amazing vision and linguistic skill Walsh explores the desires and realities of domestic life in America. Reading these fine poems we are drawn into a complex world of family where separation is natural and memory provides the only means of holding on. These powerful poems never fail to lead us to ask the right questions about family and the wilderness, the world and our place in it."--David Bottoms "With a keen and painterly eye, Bill Walsh masterfully renders the poetic, mysterious landscapes of memory and place, capturing his spiritual and physical self amid his intangible and tangible worlds that embrace us and become ours. I feel completely at home in these poems that question the very idea of home through imagery and language that is wise with longing, powerfully tender, and passionately at peace."--Richard Blanco

Book excerpt: 2018 Outstanding Academic Title, selected by Choice Recovering Native American Writings in the Boarding School Press is the first comprehensive collection of writings by students and well-known Native American authors who published in boarding school newspapers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Students used their acquired literacy in English along with more concrete tools that the boarding schools made available, such as printing technology, to create identities for themselves as editors and writers. In these roles they sought to challenge Native American stereotypes and share issues of importance to their communities. Writings by Gertrude Bonnin (Zitkala-Sa), Charles Eastman, and Luther Standing Bear are paired with the works of lesser-known writers to reveal parallels and points of contrast between students and generations. Drawing works primarily from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School (Pennsylvania), the Hampton Institute (Virginia), and the Seneca Indian School (Oklahoma), Jacqueline Emery illustrates how the boarding school presses were used for numerous and competing purposes. While some student writings appear to reflect the assimilationist agenda, others provide more critical perspectives on the schools' agendas and the dominant culture. This collection of Native-authored letters, editorials, essays, short fiction, and retold tales published in boarding school newspapers illuminates the boarding school legacy and how it has shaped, and continues to shape, Native American literary production.

Book excerpt: Ethan Vardaman was sixteen when his family moved to Chalaka, Alabama, in the deep South during the last decade of Jim Crow when racial strife was rampant. During these years of maturation, Ethan fell in love with Oui, a beautiful racially-mixed girl. After high school he left Alabama for college and medical school. Oui continued to work and go to nursing school before progressing to college and medical school. The two lovers had several chance encounters during these years, and each time their love would flare anew before being slammed back into reality. Finally in Vietnam a commitment was made, but tragedy ensued. The mule, that poignant picture of perseverance in the South is the portent throughout the story. This, the authors third novel, is written from the convictions of the authors experience. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Medical School and the neurosurgery residency of Vanderbilt University. After a naval career that included service in Vietnam aboard the hospital ship USS Repose and at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, he entered private practice in Norfolk, Virginia, and continued his teaching and research career as Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School and consultant for the Head and Spinal Cord Injury Study at the National Institutes of Health. Now retired in Chocowinity, North Carolina, his writing transcends the too often impersonal world of medicine with a graphic and verisimilar style while revealing the realism and compassion of a physician.
