Book Synopsis The Komedi Bioscoop by : Dafna Ruppin
Download or read book The Komedi Bioscoop written by Dafna Ruppin and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study of early cinema in the Netherlands Indies explores the influences of new media technology on colonial society. The Komedi Bioscoop traces the emergence of a local culture of movie-going in the Netherlands Indies (present-day Indonesia) from 1896 until 1914. It outlines the introduction of the new technology by independent touring exhibitors, the constitution of a market for moving picture shows, the embedding of moving picture exhibitions within the local popular entertainment scene, and the Dutch colonial authorities’ efforts to control film consumption and distribution. Dafna Ruppin focuses on the cinema as a social institution in which technology, race, and colonialism converged. In her illuminating study, moving picture venues in the Indies—ranging from canvas or bamboo tents to cinema palaces of brick and stone—are perceived as liminal spaces in which daily interactions across boundaries could occur within colonial Indonesia’s multi-ethnic and increasingly polarized colonial society.
Book Synopsis "I Come from a Pancasila Family" by : Suhadi
Download or read book "I Come from a Pancasila Family" written by Suhadi and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines social identity transformations through interreligious relations in post-Reformasi Indonesia. It answers two questions: how do Muslims and Christians identify and position themselves and others; and what are the socio-cognitive effects of their identification and positioning? The objectives are, first, to gain insight into the relation between religious discourse and (the lack of) social cohesion, and, second, to contribute to a theory and method of studying interreligious relations. The study is based on 24 focus group discussions in Surakarta (Central Java), making a critical discourse analysis of them. The book concludes that the interviewees use various classifications to identify and position themselves and others, although these are not fixed but fluid, depending on specific situations and interests. The book advocates for a shift from the 'social identity' theory to a 'multiple identity' theory for studying religion and interreligious relations. (Series: Interreligious Studies - Vol. 6)
Book Synopsis The Madrasa in Asia by : Farish A. Noor
Download or read book The Madrasa in Asia written by Farish A. Noor and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: "Since the rise of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the traditional Islamic schools known as the madrasa have frequently been portrayed as hotbeds of terrorism. For much longer, the madrasa has been considered by some as a backward and petrified impediment to social progress. However, for an important segment of the poor Muslim populations of Asia, madrasas constitute the only accessible form of education. This volume presents an overview of the madrasas in countries such as China, Indonesia, Malayisia, India and Pakistan."--Publisher description.
Book Synopsis Signs of the Wali by : Tommy Christomy
Download or read book Signs of the Wali written by Tommy Christomy and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis is a study of traditional narratives which are recited and received both by villagers and pilgrims in regard to the local pilgrimage (ziarah) tradition in Pamijahan, particularly at Shaykh Abdul Muhyi's sacred site. The narratives will be examined as part of the popular beliefs of Priangan Timur or the eastern part of West Java. Locating them in the wider context of Sundanese oral and written traditions, my investigation will illuminate the nature and function of such traditions in the particular case of Pamijahan. The research will elucidate the role of the kuncen, the custodians of sacred sites, as guides and spiritual brokers who maintain the narratives. It will also be important to investigate the villagers' as well as visitors' view of the kuncen in regard to local pilgrimage. The study will also enhance comparative studies concerned with networks of holy men or saints (wali) on the island of Java (Pemberton 1994; Fox 1991: 20). I want to argue that people respond to, and participate in, saint veneration on pragmatic grounds. However, these grounds are subject to interpretation and contestation in time and space. In redefining their narratives, various individuals, such as custodians, Sufis, and even to some extent government functionaries, are considered to be authoritative persons by virtue of their capacity to conduct and manipulate narratives. As this argument develops, it will be important to understand the modes of signification in the village."--Provided by publisher.
Book Synopsis Terrorism and Violence in Southeast Asia by : Paul J. Smith
Download or read book Terrorism and Violence in Southeast Asia written by Paul J. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely work examines the scale and root causes of terrorism across Southeast Asia, including the role of al-Qaeda's ascendancy in the region. It begins with an overview of the analytical and theoretical framework for discussing the subject. Individual chapters then examine terrorist activities from both functional and country-specific perspectives. The book traces fundamental linkages between terrorism and security issues, such as illegal immigration, narcotics trafficking, and other criminal activity. In addition, it considers the issue of convergence - the growing connection between criminal groups and terrorism, and how this may facilitate future violence. Written by a range of experts in the field, the individual chapters reflect a variety of perspectives. The contributions fall into two broad categories - chapters that directly address terrorism (the groups, their ideologies, their modus operandi, their origins, and state responses to them); and chapters that address the "enabling environment" that exists in Southeast Asia (the role of transnational crime, porous borders, convergence between terrorism and crime).

Book Synopsis Soeharto's New Order and Its Legacy by : Edward Aspinall
Download or read book Soeharto's New Order and Its Legacy written by Edward Aspinall and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia's President Soeharto led one of the most durable and effective authoritarian regimes of the second half of the twentieth century. Yet his rule ended in ignominy, and much of the turbulence and corruption of the subsequent years was blamed on his legacy. More than a decade after Soeharto's resignation, Indonesia is a consolidating democracy and the time has come to reconsider the place of his regime in modern Indonesian history, and its lasting impact. This book begins this task by bringing together a collection of leading experts on Indonesia to examine Soeharto and his legacy from diverse perspectives. In presenting their analyses, these authors pay tribute to Harold Crouch, an Australian political scientist who remains one of the greatest chroniclers of the Soeharto regime and its aftermath.
Book Synopsis A Muslim Archipelago by : Max L. Gross
Download or read book A Muslim Archipelago written by Max L. Gross and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2007 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia continues to beckon policymakers and scholars alike to revisit its history in spite of the tomes of appraisals already written, deconstructive or otherwise. Because of a significant presence of Muslims in the region, and particularly in the wake of 9/11, it invariably attracts the attention of foreign powers drawn by the specter of terrorism and focused on rooting out radical Islamist groups said to be working with al-Qaeda. Dr. Max Gross has written an impressive account of the role of Islam in the politics of Southeast Asia, anchored by a strong historical perspective and a comprehensive treatment of current affairs. The result is very much a post-9/11 book. The origins of Jemaah Islamiyah and its connections with al-Qaeda are carefully detailed. Yet, unlike much of the post-9/11 analysis of the Muslim world, Dr. Gross's research has been successful in placing the phenomenon of terrorism within a larger perspective. While recognizing that al-Qaeda's influence on regional terror networks remains unclear, it behooves us to be reminded that, regardless of the nature and extent of the linkages, to dismiss terrorism as a serious threat to security would be na ve to the point of recklessness. The Muslim Archipelago is a profoundly Islamic region, and Jemaah Islamiyah is only a small portion of this reality. The attention Dr. Gross pays to ABIM in Malaysia, of which I was a part, and the civil Islam movement in Indonesia, of which the late Nurcholish Madjid was a principal spokesman, is greatly appreciated. Those unfamiliar with the background and role of the traditional Islamic PAS party in Malaysia, as well as the Darul Islam movement in Indonesia, will find the author's account highly beneficial. The MNLF, the MILF, and Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines, as well as the various Islamic movements in southern Thailand, are also carefully explained.

Book excerpt: The growth of Islamic finance today is undeniable given its services, product innovation, performance and achievements, with the Islamic insurance market being no exception; it has retained global market recognition in a parallel platform as Islamic finance moves forward. There is much written regarding the Islamic insurance system, but rarely do researchers present the various Islamic insurance products and their structures in one collective place. This book is a timely addition in meeting contemporary market demands by providing a much-needed overview of the Islamic insurance products and their Shari’ah compliant structures. This book would be of interest to academics, researchers, students and professionals who are seeking to understand the products offered.

Book Synopsis Speech, Language & Communication Pocketbook by : Victoria Mason
Download or read book Speech, Language & Communication Pocketbook written by Victoria Mason and published by Management Pocketbooks. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most children develop speech, language and communication skills instinctively, a process that begins at birth and continues into adulthood. However, in most classrooms there are children - as many as 50% in some areas - who have not acquired the fundamental spoken and written skills that underpin all types of social interaction, skills that are essential for success in education and at work. This book shows teachers how to support pupils with SLCN - speech, language and communication needs. Written by a speech and language therapist and a secondary teacher working in mainstream schools, this highly illustrated Pocketbook begins by defining SLCN and placing it against a backdrop of normal language development. The authors identify who has SLCN and explain how weak communication skills lead to academic, social, emotional and behavioural problems. Language is both received and transmitted; both input and output pose problems for pupils with SLCN. A chapter on attention and listening covers hearing impairment, auditory memory, teacher talk and active listening skills. It is followed by sections on receptive language difficulties - understanding concepts and inference, reasoning and deduction - and expressive language difficulties: building sentences and narrative in speech and writing. Speech difficulties such as stammering, phonological difficulties, articulation and voice disorders are also covered. Learning, storing and retrieving vocabulary are given a section of their own as is social communication. The book concludes with ideas for implementing a whole school approach. Cartoons, diagrams and visual prompts support the text throughout.
