Book Synopsis Intergenerational Consequences of Lifestyle Migration by : Irmengard K. Wohlfart
Download or read book Intergenerational Consequences of Lifestyle Migration written by Irmengard K. Wohlfart and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the adaptation processes of German-speaking immigrants and their descendants into New Zealand’s predominantly Anglophone society. Specifically, it considers the experiences and long-term consequences of the migration of more affluent European immigrants to New Zealand, where migration was predominantly a lifestyle choice. A comprehensive four-year study adds insights into the social integration and assimilation processes of the immigrants and their descendants, including intercultural marriage behaviour, work and educational achievements and community enrichments. It also considers the institutional and social reception of these immigrants and their children in New Zealand, and the effects these have had on them. Nexus Analysis reveals that strong motives for lifestyle migration enabled the immigrants to cope with unexpected institutional setbacks in New Zealand, and finds both shifts and maintenance in language and culture, and explores feelings of belonging and identities across three generations.

Book Synopsis Clause Structure and Language Change by : Adrian Battye
Download or read book Clause Structure and Language Change written by Adrian Battye and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-12 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Principles-and-Parameters approach to linguistic theory has triggered an enormous amount of work in comparative syntax over the last decade or so. A natural consequence of the growth in synchronic comparative work has been a renewed interest in questions of diachronic syntax, and this collection testifies to that trend. These papers focus on questions of clause structure which have become a central theme of theoretical work since the pioneering work in the late 1980s by Chomsky, Pollock, and others. The languages studied by an international roster of contributors include all the major Romance and Germanic languages. This volume is of central importance for anyone working in theoretical, comparative, or historical syntax.

Book Synopsis Cross-Linguistic Structures in Simultaneous Bilingualism by : Susanne Döpke
Download or read book Cross-Linguistic Structures in Simultaneous Bilingualism written by Susanne Döpke and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-02-12 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the implications of cross-linguistic structures in simultaneous bilingualism. It aims to find cognitive explanations for the presence or absence of cross-linguistic structures that go beyond the debate of ‘one system or two’. The contributors present syntactic, morphological and phonological features that are found in bilingual children, but are untypical of monolingual development, and discuss pertinent methodological issues. The orientation of this volume stands out from competing volumes in the field in that the focus is not limited to similarities between monolingual and bilingual first language acquisition. The volume will be of interest to researchers in the field of bilingualism and primary language acquisition, language theorists, and professionals working with bilingual populations.

Book Synopsis Korchnoi: Move by Move by : Cyrus Lakdawala
Download or read book Korchnoi: Move by Move written by Cyrus Lakdawala and published by Everyman Chess. This book was released on with total page 1049 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viktor Korchnoi is a chess legend. In a career which has spanned over 60 years, he won countless grandmaster tournaments, was a four-time Soviet Champion, a multi-time World Championship Candidate, and twice fought for the World Championship in famous battles with his adversary Anatoly Karpov. Throughout his career Korchnoi continually refined his style and he was as comfortable in defence as he was in attack. He was happy to provoke opponents, accept sacrifices, defend precisely and then ruthlessly exploit weaknesses. In this book, former American Open Champion Cyrus Lakdawala studies his favourite Korchnoi games and examines Korchnoi's skills in the key areas of attack and defence, initiative, exploiting imbalances, accumulating advantages and endgame play. He demonstrates clearly how we can all improve by learning from Korchnoi's play. Move by Move provides an ideal platform to study chess. By continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to improve your chess skills and knowledge.

Book Synopsis Early English Viols: Instruments, Makers and Music by : Michael Fleming
Download or read book Early English Viols: Instruments, Makers and Music written by Michael Fleming and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Nicholas Bessaraboff Prize Musical repertory of great importance and quality was performed on viols in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century England. This is reported by Thomas Mace (1676) who says that ’Your Best Provision’ for playing such music is a chest of old English viols, and he names five early English viol makers than which ’there are no Better in the World’. Enlightened scholars and performers (both professional and amateur) who aim to understand and play this music require reliable historical information and need suitable viols, but so little is known about the instruments and their makers that we cannot specify appropriate instruments with much precision. Our ignorance cannot be remedied exclusively by the scrutiny or use of surviving antique viols because they are extremely rare, they are not accessible to performers and the information they embody is crucially compromised by degradation and alteration. Drawing on a wide variety of evidence including the surviving instruments, music composed for those instruments, and the documentary evidence surrounding the trade of instrument making, Fleming and Bryan draw significant conclusions about the changing nature and varieties of viol in early modern England.
