Book Synopsis How to Do Philosophy with Words by : Jesús Navarro
Download or read book How to Do Philosophy with Words written by Jesús Navarro and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays philosophy is characterized by such heterogeneous intellectual practices that its very unity and coherence seem endangered. What is especially disconcerting is that most authors manage to largely ignore the very existence of methodological positions radically different from their own. Fortunately, there have been exceptions, and the present volume focuses on one of them: the failed debate that took place between John Searle and Jacques Derrida. This book thoroughly analyses that exchange, contextualizing it within the respective philosophical traditions of the two thinkers, with the general aim of turning their dispute into what it was not: a respectful, sensible and fruitful controversy. This episode is thus taken as an opportunity to reflect on the peculiar nature of philosophy as an intellectual practice, and to discuss some of its main themes: language as an instrument for communication, the intentionality of consciousness, and difference as a constitutive element of every text.

Book Synopsis Philosophy of Latin America by : Guttorm Fløistad
Download or read book Philosophy of Latin America written by Guttorm Fløistad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-08-31 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, European powers, Portugal and Spain in particular, have dominated the socio-economic life, political system and the cultural expressions of countries in Latin America. Europeans have imposed upon them their languages and religious beliefs, with Christian philosophy dominating the scene from the middle of the 16th century onwards. No wonder then, that in the wake of colonialism, questions of the development of an independent economy, a just political system, the relief from poverty and a specific Latin American cultural identity are being raised. These questions are linked to philosophy because philosophical reflection is part and parcel of most cultures.

Book Synopsis Profile of Man and Culture in Mexico by : Samuel Ramos
Download or read book Profile of Man and Culture in Mexico written by Samuel Ramos and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profile of Man and Culture in Mexico, originally written in 1934, is addressed to the author’s compatriots, but it speaks to people, wherever they are, who are interested in enriching their own lives and in elevating the cultural level of their countries. And it speaks with a peculiar timeliness to citizens of the United States who would understand their neighbors to the south. Samuel Ramos’s avowed purpose is to assist in the spiritual reform of Mexico by developing a theory that might explain the real character of Mexican culture. His approach is not flattering to his fellow citizens. After an analysis of the historical forces that have molded the national psychology, Ramos concludes that the Mexican sense of inferiority is the basis for most of the Mexican’s spiritual troubles and for the shortcomings of the Mexican culture. Ramos subscribes to neither of the two major opposing schools of thought as to what norms should direct the development of Mexican culture. He agrees neither with the nationalists, who urge a deliberate search for originality and isolation from universal culture, nor with the “Europeanizers,” who advocate abandonment of the life around them and a withdrawal into the modes of foreign cultures. Ramos thinks that Mexico’s hope lies in a respect for the good in native elements and a careful selection of those foreign elements that are appropriate to Mexican life. Such a sensible choice of foreign elements will result not in imitation, but in assimilation. Combined with the nurturing of desirable native elements, it will result in an independent cultural unit, “a new branch grafted onto world culture.” Ramos finds in Mexico no lack of intelligence or vitality: “It needs only to learn.” And he believes that the future is Mexico’s, that favorable destinies await a Mexico striving for the elevation of humanity, for the betterment of life, for the development of all the national capacities.

Book Synopsis Manifesto of New Realism by : Maurizio Ferraris
Download or read book Manifesto of New Realism written by Maurizio Ferraris and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical realism has taken a number of different forms, each applied to different topics and set against different forms of idealism and subjectivism. Maurizio Ferraris's Manifesto of New Realism takes aim at postmodernism and hermeneutics, arguing against their emphasis on reality as constructed and interpreted. While acknowledging the value of these criticisms of traditional, dogmatic realism, Ferraris insists that the insights of postmodernism have reached a dead end. Calling for the discipline to turn its focus back to truth and the external world, Ferraris's manifesto—which sparked lively debate in Italy and beyond—offers a wiser realism with social and political relevance.
