Book excerpt: Three years ago, Kylee's world shattered when her husband tragically died in a climbing accident. And yet, ironically, his final gift to her was an inn on the edge of a treacherous cliff, catering to thrill-seeking rock climbers. The constant presence of towering mountains and steep cliffs only serves as a painful reminder of her loss, but she soldiers on for the sake of their shared dream. When Shawn Walker arrives, a skilled climber seeking new challenges in these unforgiving cliffs, he’s intrigued with the pretty inn keeper. As he scales the rocky faces and pushes himself to the limit, he finds temporary refuge from the heartache of losing his own family three years prior. But it's not just the adrenaline rush that keeps him at the inn - it's the kind-hearted owner and her charming young son who have captured his attention. Despite knowing that their time together is limited, Shawn can't resist extending his stay for another week. He knows they can never become a couple, but he clings to the fleeting moments with them as long as he can. Will he be able to let go once his vacation is over, or will he risk everything for a chance at something more?

Book excerpt: Crossways was a luxurious hunting and fishing lodge in the Blue Ridge Mountains, owned and operated by Judge Bramblett. The judge, retired from the bench, was assisted by his two granddaughters: Cherry, a pretty redhead with a warm, outgoing personality who loved the world and all its creatures; and her older sister, Loyce, depressed and withdrawn since the death of her fiancé fourteen months before. Although the two sisters were, superficially, as different as night and day, they had at least some tastes in common, as demonstrated by their mutual interest in Jonathan Gayle. Jonathan, a lawyer from the north who was visiting the Lodge for an indefinite vacation period while he reassessed his future, was attractive, with the charm of the unfamiliar, and with the appeal of the temporary wayfarer. In addition, he had known Loyce’s dead sweetheart. But which sister would steal his heart? Sensuality Level: Behind Closed Doors

Book excerpt: Discover the spellbinding magic of In the Hall of The Mountain King in this musical retelling of Peer Gynt—push the button on each beautiful scene to hear the vivid sound of an orchestra playing from Grieg’s score. This tale of a boy’s adventure through the valleys and mountains of the Norwegian countryside begins at a wedding feast far, far away. Peer Gynt is bored and he’s longing for adventure. After sneaking off from the party, he finds himself at a peaceful lake where he meets some dairy people. When he lies about his escapades riding reindeer through the sky, they dare him to go to the lair of the Mountain King, the king of the trolls. The king’s halls are dark and spooky, and it isn’t long before Peer is captured. How will he escape? And will he learn the importance of humility and the value of friends? As you and your little one journey through the magical scenes, you will press the buttons to hear 10 excerpts from the score. Readers should press firmly on the pages to activate the sounds, encouraging interactive learning and introducing children to this beautiful piece of music. At the back of the book, find a short biography of the composer, Edvard Grieg, with details about his composition of Peer Gynt. Next to this, you can replay the musical excerpts and, for each of them, read a discussion of the instruments, rhythms, and musical techniques that make them so powerful. A glossary defines musical terms. The Story Orchestra series brings classical music to life for children through gorgeously illustrated retellings of classic ballet, opera, and program music stories paired with 10-second sound clips of orchestras playing from their musical scores. Also available from the Story Orchestra series: The Magic Flute, I Can Play (vol 1), Carnival of the Animals, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Four Seasons in One Day. Manufacturer’s note: please pull the white tab out of the back of the book before use. Sound buttons require a firm push in the exact location to work, which may be hard for young children. All sound clips are 10 seconds long. The perfect primer to introduce children to classical music.

'You know, I really love the French Alps, and looking at all the animals that live in the mountains. I'm Australian, so I had never seen a marmot before moving to France. I worked one summer, for a kids' summer camp, and part of my job was to take the children out on walks. We would go looking for marmots, all of us being very quiet, secretly sneaking up to the holes in the ground, where the entrances to the marmot burrows were. Of course, we would make too much noise and the marmots would disappear into their underground tunnels, but sometimes we were lucky and able to take photos. I think their underground homes took over my imagination, and before you knew it, I had a whole chapter book in my head, with Magali as the principal character!'

Book excerpt: Musical theatre has a special place in the hearts of Australians. Whether it is The Boy from Oz, Bran Nue Dae or Muriel's Wedding, we love to see Australian stories on the big stage with all the glamour, energy and vibrancy a musical can offer. However magical they are on stage, performances leave behind few traces. Australia has a rich, hidden history of achievement in musical theatre which is now largely forgotten. Drawing on their long careers in musical performance, and extensive research in public and private collections, Peter Wyllie Johnston and Peter Pinne have compiled a definitive account of the history of musical theatre in Australia. From small amateur performances in the early days, to international achievements, to the new wave of Australian musicals from the 1990s right through to the explosion of creativity in the 21st century, they recount the emotional roller-coaster of successes and disappointments of one of the most demanding art forms. Also included is an authoritative guide to over 300 Australian musicals. Richly illustrated with colour photos from the early days to the present, The Australian Musical is a book to treasure for years to come, and an invaluable resource for anyone involved with theatre and music. 'This history helps to cement my relationship with Australian musical theater, which is in for the long haul.' - TED CHAPIN, President, The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization 'This fine book is surely the family tree of the Australian musical - an impressive study and fascinating read.' - REG LIVERMORE AO 'Groundbreaking . . . strips away assumptions and misconceptions about Australian musicals, and exposes their true history for the first time' - from the introduction by MARK MADAMA, Associate Professor of Musical Theatre, University of Michigan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive fieldwork and documentary research in China, this book is a chronicle of the musical history of Lijiang County in China's southern Yunnan Province. It focuses on Dongjing music, a repertoire borrowed from China's Han ethnic majority by the indigenous Naxi inhabitants of Lijiang County. Used in Confucian worship as well as in secular entertainment, Dongjing music played a key role the Naxi minority's assimilation of Han culture over the last 200 years. Prized for its complexity and elegance, which set it apart from "rough" or "simpler" indigenous Naxi music, Dongjing played an important role in defining social relationships, since proficiency in the music and membership in the Dongjing associations signified high social status and cultural refinement. In addition, there is a strong political component in its examination of the role of indigenous music in the relation of a socialist state to its ethnic minorities. The first in English on this rich musical tradition, this book is also unique in providing a complete history of the music in a single region in China over the twentieth century. It integrates individual, local, and national histories with musical experience and musical change. Ethnic music in China provides a vivid example of the tremendous cultural changes over the past century, and the tradition continues to evolve as China encourages ethnic diversity within a unified socialist nation. The book includes a case study of China's tourist trade and its policies toward minorities.
