Book excerpt: The true tale of an edenic Rocky Mountain town and what transpired when a predatory species returned to its ancestral home. When, in the late 1980s, residents of Boulder, Colorado, suddenly began to see mountain lions in their yards, it became clear that the cats had repopulated the land after decades of persecution. Here, in a riveting environmental fable that recalls Peter Benchley's thriller Jaws, journalist David Baron traces the history of the mountain lion and chronicles Boulder's effort to coexist with its new neighbors. A parable for our times, The Beast in the Garden is a scientific detective story and a real-life drama, a tragic tale of the struggle between two highly evolved predators: man and beast.

Stalked by a Mountain Lion tells the stories of attacks and strange encounters between cougars and people and offers a sensitive look at the often complex issues surrounding their interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April of ‘93 and March of ‘97 the editors of Western Outdoor News took the California Department of Fish and Game to task for under-reporting mountain lion involvement in disappearances. University of Idaho Statistic Professor Kirk Trigsted conducted Permutation Tests on multiple disappearances in nine different areas of Ca. that clearly rejected that they were random events. In each of the nine all had vanished during time-frames and in areas that could have encompassed the life span and the home range of a single cougar. Letter from Marv Hagedorn Idaho District 20’s representative, “Regarding the information you have been putting together on the Mule Deer herds here in ...SW.[Idaho]. I agree we are selling tags for a product that does not exist and have been doing it for a very long time. Following his only conviction, the author and his receptionists passed polygraph tests disputing the three arresting officer’s testimonies that he was at his shop the day in question, and had individually confessed his guilt to each of them. Moreover Warden Stegall in his affidavit claimed that the author signed the evidence receipt. However the document contains only Donna his receptionist’s signature. Despite the conviction, which focused on bighorn sheep, San Bernardino National Forest’s head wildlife biologist Steve N Loe, giving him the combinations to the areas locked gates authorized the author, on July 30th of ‘92, to survey the San Gabriel Mountain’s Nelson Bighorn populations. California Legislator Bill Leonard after the author forced a rollback in D-14’s hunting dates wrote, “It is commendable that citizens such as yourself feel so strongly that you help bring about actions by government agencies.”

They were both predators looking for easy prey.” Poe Ballantine visits his dying Grandfather Bing, receives free rent in return for evicting difficult tenants from the Totalitarian Hotel, models nude for budding artists, reconnects with his parents, befriends a lonely Austrian tourist on the Greyhound bus, cooks and gambles in Vegas, falls in love, returns to his wife’s homeland of Mexico to baptize his son, and discovers the true meaning of Guidelines for Mountain Lion Safety. In this new collection of essays, Ballantine is at his soulful and penetrating best. At once hilarious and heart wrenching, the author recounts the trajectory of his own journey from reckless adolescence to the responsibilities of parenthood with disarming honesty, always fearlessly confronting those bullies and demons that threaten to blow us all off course.

But this big cat has more adaptations to keep it well fed, including sharp claws, a flexible spine, and large, padded paws. It also has interesting habits, such as hiding its prey from other animals so it can come back again and again for a bite to eat. Readers will learn much more about these fierce animals of North America, including the endangered Florida panther, in this book's fact-filled pages and colorful photographs.

Book excerpt: This is a multi-title review. Titles include 'Mountain Lion' and 'Shadow Cat' - NAT HIST The cougar, puma, mountain lion (or any number of other names) is considered extirpated from the eastern United States. An endangered population of a (debatable) subspecies, the Florida panther, numbers about 50 individuals. However, in the West, cougars are encountering humans more often, and their numbers are estimated to be strong. Unfortunately, as a result of increased contact, more humans (nine) have died from cougar attacks in the last 25 years than in the previous 100. Hence the timely publication of these two titles and others (e.g., Karen McCall's Cougar: Ghost of the Rockies, LJ 11/15/92). In Mountain Lion, wildlife photographer Cox's collection of outstanding color photos features cougars in action, in repose, at play, with their young, on the hunt, and more, as well as views of the rugged terrain that supports the great cats. Grambo's text offers a concise natural history, comments on human encounters and future concerns, and a brief bibliography. Shadow Cat is an anthology of 20 essays on the American mountain lion by such noted writers as Rick Bass, David Quammen, and Terry Tempest Williams covering natural history, human encounters, hunting issues, and predator politics. This nicely balanced collection covers the issues from more than one perspective. Both titles are recommended for public libraries and natural history collections. Nancy J. Moeckel, Miami Univ. Book excerpt: The mountain lion came out of nowhere, grabbed the little girl by the head, and they were gone."Out of the Lion's Den" is the true story of five- year- old Laura Small's attack in an Orange County, California park. But it's not only the story of Laura's long recovery from brain injuries. Her parents soon realized that the attack wasn't just the result of a lone mountain lion. Early morning anonymous phone calls, erasures on police reports, and a California moratorium on killing lions, led a persistent investigator and a brilliant lawyer all the way to a trial against Orange County for negligence. And for Laura's mother, who believed in God and had been a nun for six years, one question still haunted her. How could a loving God allow such suffering? Please visit outofthelionsden.net for more information about the book and the author.

Being one of the largest predatory animals of the United States, it is necessary to keep mountain lions well under control to save domestic livestock and also the kids. The Hints on Mountain Lion Trapping, according to Young, is based on the experience of Biological Survey predatory-animal hunters.
