Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important questions in psychology is how best to nurture children's development. Parents' child-rearing practices are a major contributor to how their children develop, and parents' beliefs about children are a major contributor to how they treat their children. This book synthesizes a large and diverse literature on what parents believe about children in general and their own children in particular. Its scope is broad, encompassing beliefs directed to numerous aspects of children's development in both the cognitive and social realms that span the age periods from birth through adolescence. For each topic, this book seeks to ask four crucial questions: What is the nature of parents' beliefs? What are the origins of parents' beliefs? How do parents' beliefs relate to parents' behavior? And how do parents' beliefs relate to children's development? These questions tie into longstanding theoretical issues in psychology, they are central to our understanding of both parenting practices and children's development, and they speak to some of the most important pragmatic issues for which psychology can provide answers. Parents' Beliefs About Children brings together a vast body of scholarship in a new way, which makes the material accessible to both researchers in the field of child development and a more general readership.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Childhood AD/HD assessments rely almost exclusively on maternal report of children's behavior, thereby leaving open the possibility that fathers might report AD/HD behaviors differently. Despite this possibility, true comparisons of mothers' and fathers' reports are difficult to ascertain given that commonly used assessment procedures were developed primarily from mothers' reports and the parent, child, and family variables that may contribute to differences in reporting are often not taken into account. In response to these concerns, the current study explored mothers' and fathers' ratings of children displaying AD/HD behaviors. In the first phase of the study, two videos, one of a boy and one of a girl displaying comparable AD/HD and normative behavior, were developed and standardized. In the second phase, 50 mother-father dyads of children with behavioral problems rated the videos. Primary analyses did not support the first hypothesis that mothers would rate AD/HD behaviors at higher levels than fathers. Although no significant differences emerged, trends revealed that fathers rated the boy and girl more severely than mothers. Mothers and fathers also rated the girl's AD/HD symptoms more severely than the boy's symptoms. Additionally, parent and family variables, including parents' knowledge of AD/HD, marital dissatisfaction, perceptions of their own child's AD/HD behavior, and the recreational contexts in which parents interact with their children were associated with parents' perceptions of an unfamiliar child's AD/HD behavior. Implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All parents experience stress as they attempt to meet the challenges of caring for their children. This comprehensive book examines the causes and consequences of parenting distress, drawing on a wide array of findings in current empirical research. Kirby Deater-Deckard explores normal and pathological parenting stress, the influences of parents on their children as well as children on their parents, and the effects of biological and environmental factors. Beginning with an overview of theories of stress and coping, Deater-Deckard goes on to describe how parenting stress is linked with problems in adult and child health (emotional problems, developmental disorders, illness); parental behaviors (warmth, harsh discipline); and factors outside the family (marital quality, work roles, cultural influences). The book concludes with a useful review of coping strategies and interventions that have been demonstrated to alleviate parenting stress.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this dissertation was to examine parent involvement in the education of their adolescent children with ADHD. The three studies were informed by aspects of two theoretical models (Hoover-Dempsey Sandler, 2005; Ryan Adams, 1995) that identify motivational and contextual factors that influence parental involvement, parent involvement behaviors, and parent and child factors that predict children's academic achievement. Study 1 compared parents of adolescents with and without ADHD with regard to their involvement in their adolescents' learning, study 2 explored the relationship between maternal and paternal self-efficacy and involvement behaviors with adolescents' academic achievement, and study 3 examined the contribution of adolescents' and mothers' characteristics associated with maternal self-efficacy for supporting their adolescents' learning. Method: The sample comprised 108 families with adolescents 13 to 18 years of age (58 ADHD, 50 non-ADHD). Parents reported on the psychological and contextual factors linked to their decision to become involved in their adolescents' learning, their parental involvement behaviors, their parenting stress and their own ADHD symptoms. Adolescents reported on their perception of their parents' involvement behaviors. Adolescents, their parents and teachers completed measures assessing adolescents' inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, oppositional behaviors, learning problems, and academic achievement. Results: Both mothers and fathers of adolescents with ADHD reported lower self-efficacy to support their adolescents' learning than parents of typically developing adolescents. Mothers of adolescents with ADHD, but not fathers, were less supportive of their adolescent children's learning and had lower aspirations for their children than mothers of typically developing adolescents. Mothers' self-efficacy and involvement behaviors did not predict adolescent academic achievement. Paternal self-efficacy, supportive involvement behaviors and aspirations were associated with higher academic achievement only in adolescents with ADHD. Mother-reported adolescent oppositional behaviors predicted maternal self-efficacy and this relationship was mediated by maternal parenting stress. The results partially support the theoretical models that informed the research. The findings highlight the role of parental self-efficacy. They suggest that fathers' involvement in the learning of their adolescent children with ADHD is an important factor in enhancing the adolescents' achievement, and that maternal involvement is influenced by their adolescents' oppositional behaviors, their self-efficacy, and their parenting stress.

Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers. Therefore, Frontiers in Psychiatry is proud to offer this platform to promote the work of women scientists, across all fields of Psychiatry. The work presented here highlights the diversity of research performed across the entire breadth of Psychiatry research and presents advances in theory, experiment, and methodology with applications to compelling problems. Please note: To be considered for this collection, the first or last author should be a researcher who identifies as a woman.

Book excerpt: First published in 1984. In the last two decades, countries throughout the Western world have witnessed dramatic changes in social attitudes concerning sex roles. The aim of this book is to review the evidence concerning: a) the factors that limit or constrain male involvement in child care; b) the ways in which some of these factors are being or might be changed; and c) the effects of traditional and increased paternal involvement on men, women, and children.
