Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boll Weevil Problem: With Special Reference to Means of Reducing Damage Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of a paper, by Mr. W. D. Hunter, agent in charge of southern field crop insect and tick investigations in this Bureau, dealing with the boll weevil, especially with reference to means of reducing its damage. So many publications upon different phases of the boll-weevil problem have been issued by this Department during the years since the weevil has invaded the United States that it has seemed advisable to pre sent a summary in a single paper of the practical results recorded therein and including the results, as yet. Unpublished, of the most recent investigations. This purpose has been carried out in the present paper, the publication of which as a Farmers' Bulletin is hereby recommended, superseding no. 216. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proliferation as a Factor in the Natural Control of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil As the significance of these observations came to be more fully appreciated it was believed that they contained at least a suggestion as to some very promising lines of work in the problem of controlling the weevil. Accordingly, it has been necessary to study carefully the nature of the phenomenon, conditions of climate, soil, fertilizer, and variety of cotton which affected the occurrence of proliferation. Observations have, therefore, been made upon quite a large number of varieties and in locations ranging from Victoria to Dallas, Tex., upon various types of soil, and in connection with various experiments with fertilizers and different conditions of cultivation. From a comparison of the results thus obtained it was hoped that some factors might be found which could be used practically in increasing proliferation, and thus rendering it more effective as a factor in controlling the weevil. In many cases the results of the work have been quite different from those anticipated, but enough has been learned to justify the assertion that at present proliferation is a more important factor in retarding the multiplication of the weevil than are the parasites which have thus far been found. Large numbers of squares and bolls have been carefully examined in obtaining these records. In the examination of bolls, the lock has been made the unit rather than the boll. As a general rule, a larva confines its injury almost, if not entirely, to the lock within which the egg was originally placed. Quite frequently two or more larvae occur within a look, but even in such cases the injury does not often extend through the septum or partition which separates the locks. In making a comparison of varieties considerable care is required in subdividing the classes of observations in order to render the infin ential conditions sufficiently uniform to make the observations fairly comparable and wherever possible to reduce the fundamental causes or stimuli producing variations in the proliferation to one essential factor. While the phenomenon in bolls is of a similar nature to that in squares, conditions in these two cases are so different that the results are not strictly comparable, and therefore separate tables have been made for squares and bolls. The effects of feeding and egg punctures also call for separate classification. This treatment of the subject necessarily multiplies the number of tables, but we hope that it will render the results more easily intelligible. The personal equation of the observer has been equalized by combining the records made by a number of investigators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Parasites of the Cotton Boll Weevil The boll weevil has been present in the United States for fourteen years. At this time it is doing serious damage to cotton in four States, and during the present season undoubtedly will invade a fifth. In regions like Central America, where the insect has existed for many years, there are various influences that serve to hold it in check. In this country Similar influences are beginning to be in evidence. Among the direct factors in the natural control Of the boll weevil that are now at work are the following: Heat and dry ness, the native ant Solenopsis geminata, winter temperatures, proliferation, parasites, defoliation by the cotton leaf-worm, deter minate growth, and birds. Of these, proliferation and birds have already received careful special attention, while the work of the native ant has received preliminary notice. The other factors have also been more or less discussed in the publications of the Bureau of Entomology and elsewhere, and more extensive studies of certain ones will be discussed by Dr. W. E. Hinds in Bulletin No. 74 of this Bureau. While the work of parasites, discussed in this bulletin, is not. At present one Of the most important factors in the control of the boll weevil, the indications are clear that its importance will grow rapidly. Moreover, the matter has special interest for the reason that it is not unlikely that practical means may be devised to increase the work of the parasites. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Factors in the Natural Control of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil The magnitude of the work involved is directly increased by the extent of the area affected and by the variations in climatic, geo logical, and cultural conditions which are encountered within the weevil-infested area. While some factors may be studied through multiplied Observations as to their effect in individual cases, others must. Be considered from the broader standpoints of the general movement of the species, crop production, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds That Eat the Cotton Boll Weevil: A Report of Progress During the growing season of cotton the adult weevils are concealed the greater part of the time on the buds, or 'squares, ' where the enfold ing bracts afford almost complete protection from most of their enemies; this fact largely explains why comparatively few weevils are eaten by birds during the summer months. The amount of time they spend on the wing and the distance they fly from place to place are not well known, but it is only during the period of maximum infestation that any considerable proportion of the insects can be found in exposed situations. After the first hard frost, weevils begin to leave the cotton plants and seek sheltered places in which to hiber nate. During this period their numbers are materially reduced, but in favored seasons many weevils successfully pass the winter in their retreats. Rubbish piles about the borders of fields apparently furnish the most desirable hibernating quarters, and in such situations the weevils are exposed more or less to the attacks of ground-feeding birds. They are said to make use also of the hiding places afforded by the cotton and corn stalks which have been left standing. Investigations thus far made show that while fewer weevils are destroyed by birds in winter than in summer, the number of Species of birds that feed upon them in winter is somewhat greater. The birds which eat boll weevils in winter and spring and up to the time of the breeding season of the insects are more important economically than those which eat them in summer, for the reason that during the season of nonactivity of the weevils a relatively long period must elapse before they can make good the losses in their numbers, while during the breeding season weevils multiply with astonishing rapidity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boll Weevil Control With Emphasis on Early-Season and Fall Treatment in 1960, 1961, and 1962 at Tallulah, La Results of experiments conducted in 1960, 1961, and 1962 indicated that fall applications of methyl parathion were effective in reducing hibernating boll weevil populations. However, a 7 - day application interval.wou1d probably be more effective than a lo - day interval. Although control of overwintered boll weevils with Guthion required a minimum of late-season treatment, the best control was obtained when fall treatment with methyl.parathion was followed with Guthion for overwintered boll weevil control. This procedure would be much more effective in reducing overwintered boll weevil populations in the boll weevil belt than fall treatment or early-spring treatment alone.
