Book excerpt: This past summer, five days before Lorrie's mother passed on to heaven, the Holy Spirit led her to a time of intimacy in the Song of Solomon. She was drawn into a deep personal intimacy with the Lord who ministered to her heart the healing balm of Gilead. At the leading of the Holy Spirit, she recorded in her journal her intimate times with Jesus each morning. The book you hold in your hands contains some of these precious, personal times with Jesus. Here, in this book, Lorrie pens alongside the truth of Scripture, our completeness in Christ Jesus, and our value as His beautiful bride. Come away and commune with Jesus. Marnie Bergman's great gift of poetry within the Song of Solomon adds a similarly precious dimension with our Lord that will delight your heart and lead you to a greater understanding of the passages. * * * * * While reading "Morning Reflections" the Lord inspired me to write a few poetic prayers. Hopefully, you will take the time to read, meditate and maybe even sing some of the poetic prayers to yourself and others. Thank you, Lorrie, for the privilege of partnering with you in this adventure in the Song of Solomon. Linking arms with fellow believers and enjoying God's Word together will be a wonderful way to begin your day!

Book excerpt: The Song of Solomon, as its Hebrew title indicates, is "the best of songs." In it we hear the passionate melody of romantic love. But whose love is described? Is it a couple's love for each other, God's love for Israel or Christ's love for the church? This Old Testament book has fascinated and perplexed interpreters for centuries. They have felt uncomfortable--even embarrassed--when confronted with its strange and erotic imagery."The Song is a celebration of the nature of humanity---male and female created in God's image for mutal support and enjoyment. There is nothing here of the aggressive male and the reluctant or victimized female. They are one in their desires because their desires are God-given." So writes Lloyd Carr in this introduction and commentary to the Song of Solomon. With his own unique style, Carr skillfully explains the meaning of this ancient love story in a way that can be clearly grasped and applied for Christians living in today's world.

Book excerpt: Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon (commonly known as Madame Guyon), was a French mystic and one of the key advocates of Quietism. Guyon believed that one should pray all the time, and that in whatever one does, one should be spending time with God. "Prayer is the key of perfection and of sovereign happiness; it is the efficacious means of getting rid of all vices and of acquiring all virtues; for the way to become perfect is to live in the presence of God. He tells us this Himself: "walk before me, and be thou perfect" Genesis 17:1. Prayer alone can bring you into His presence, and keep you there continually." As she wrote in one of her poems: "There was a period when I chose, A time and place for prayer ... But now I seek that constant prayer, In inward stillness known ..." Like St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Calvin, and Martin Luther, she thought that a person's deliverance can only come from God as an outside source, never from within the person himself or herself. Accordingly, God is supposed to decide who is to be saved, regardless of anyone's efforts or industry. He then, as a result of His own free will, bestows his favor as a gift. This predestination was opposed by the Pelagians, who considered it to be irrational in that God would favor a wicked sinner over a good person.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countless self-help books offer us formulas. However, God is not quite as manageable as they promise, and reality has a way of messing up their systems. Following Jesus often involves more on our plates than human wisdom condones, and the pace of our lives often pacifies the deeper yearnings of the soul. Come, Fill the Gap is a 30-day revival of passion, feasting verse by verse on the life-giving Words of the Song of Solomon. Intended as an interaction between you, the reader, and the Author of your soul, my prayer is that this book might help you tune in to the music of your heart where His deep calls to yours. Most chapters in this 30-day devotional are divided into these sections: - A relevant quote from a sojourner in life bring perspectives spanning centuries and continents. - Literary Treasures draw from the wisdom and research of scholars to help us mine deeper jewels from this Living Word. - Come, Fill the Gap are my musings and experiences from clinging to these Scriptures for over two decades. - Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart is your place of response. The blank lines following the reflection questions are intended to capture your own love song, as you respond to His Voice. As a former lesbian flamenco dancer, now a Calvary Chapel pastor's wife for 18 years in South Beach, and the mother of two vibrant children, my entire life is immersed in the quest to help passionate people live unique, godly lives. From intimate conversations with seekers in our congregations to parents and teens in the co-op where i teach home-schoolers to speaking engagements on the subject, I have been met with a consistent sigh of relief and renewed spark of joy, when I speak of these wild beauties available in everyday life. Not a scholar, I am simply a fellow sojourner, who has discovered a Paradise I just can't keep to myself. See for yourself...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Volume 3 of a 5-Volume collection of devotional thoughts drawn from each chapter of the Bible. Morning Conversations on the Wisdom of the Ages takes the reader through five books of wisdom literature. Once again, I invite you to join with me in a fresh devotional read through the pages of the Old Testament text. My goal in writing is not to exhaustively interpret, translate, or provide full commentary on every chapter of the Old Testament, but to help you engage with the text and perhaps draw some meaningful application for each day. I have discovered a number of fascinating ways the truth of God's Word leaps off the page and into my heart. It is my hope that some of my reflections will help you with your discovery of scripture and the role of faith in your life. I use the word "Conversations" with great intentionality. I think Bible study should happen that way. God is revealed to us through God's story, and then we reflect and offer back to God the thoughts of our hearts. It is a conversation... a back-and-forth dialogue. Conversations invite us to ponder, reflect, inquire, learn, and grow. As you read through these volumes, my hope is that you will take the time, not to simply read what I have written, but to reflect with me on what the ancients have written. Let me challenge you each morning to take a moment to read the suggested focus chapter from a trusted translation before you dive into the words I have written. Read and reflect. As you make your way through this book, and the other volumes in the set, you will discover a lot of my life story written into these pages. But more importantly, I hope you will discover a lot about God's story... the one carefully crafted and preserved for you. For in hearing God's story, you will hear the echoing refrain of God's desire to know you, to love you, and to redeem you. Welcome to the conversation. Morning Conversations Volumes 1-5 Morning Conversations on the Creation of a People and Place is the first volume of a set that follows the natural order of the Old Testament canon, and spans the Biblical narrative from the opening chapter of Genesis to the end of the book of Ruth. Morning Conversations on the Rise and Fall of Kings and Kingdoms continues the orderly progression, spanning the books of 1 Samuel through Esther. Morning Conversations on the Wisdom of the Ages covers all five books of wisdom literature from Job to the Song of Solomon. Morning Conversations on the Prophetic Word wraps up the Old Testament with a look at the books of prophecy, covering both the Major and Minor prophets, Isaiah through Malachi. Additionally, Morning Conversations on the New Testament is the final volume of this collection, offering perspective from each chapter of the New Testament.

Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God's Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) "Gospel Glimpses" highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) "Whole-Bible Connections" show how any given passage connects to the Bible's overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) "Theological Soundings" identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God's grace on every page of the Bible. The book of Song of Solomon recounts the romantic love between a young man and a young woman, written in the form of poems. The depiction of marriage in this book—characterized by beauty, passion, difficulty, and commitment—offers modern readers a divine perspective on human love. This 12-week study highlights the practical wisdom embedded in this poem and its place in the larger biblical story, reflecting God's love toward his people and offering a much-needed message for our world today. Part of the Knowing the Bible series.

However, the themes of love and longing, expectation and fulfillment take on a wondrous hue when seen as a reflection of Gods love for His people. This book will teach you about the power and beauty of physical love within the clearly defined boundaries that God has established; the reflection of Christs love for His Church, through faithful human marriage; and the consummation of Gods love for us in Christ, to be celebrated at the marriage feast of the Lamb. 11 sessions.

Book excerpt: Reflections for Daily Prayer is a highly valued daily Bible companion based on the Common Worship Lectionary. Each day, Monday to Saturday, some of the very best writers from across the Anglican tradition offer insightful, informed and inspiring reflections on one of the day’s readings for Morning Prayer. Their reflections will appeal to anyone who values both the companionship of daily Bible notes and the structure of the Lectionary. For every day (excluding Sundays) of the 2016/17 church year, there are full references and a quotation from the day’s set of Scripture readings, a concise but challenging commentary on the readings and a collect. In addition, the book includes a simple order for morning and night prayer, an introduction to the practice of daily prayer by Bishop John Pritchard and a guide to reading the Bible reflectively by Bishop Stephen Cottrell.
