Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventh-day Adventism was born as a radical millenarian sect in nineteenth-century America. It has since spread across the world, achieving far more success in Latin America, Africa, and Asia than in its native land. In what seems a paradox, Adventist expectation of Christ’s imminent return has led the denomination to develop extensive educational, publishing, and health systems. Increasingly established within a variety of societies, Adventism over time has modified its views on many issues and accommodated itself to the “delay” of the Second Advent. In the process, it has become a multicultural religion that nonetheless reflects the dominant influence of its American origins. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Seventh-Day Adventists covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on key people, cinema, politics and government, sports, and critics of Ellen White. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Seventh-day Adventism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s, sabbatarian Adventism prior to organization of the denomination, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church since its organization in 1861-63, this volume provides a comprehensive history of the denomination. The first major element of the book is a chronology of Adventist history that begins with William Miller's conclusion in 1818 that the Second Advent of Jesus would occur about 1843 and extends through the Science and Theology Conferences of 2002-04. The interpretive introduction that follows places the emergence of Adventism within the context of the Second Great Awakening, describes the development of sabbatarian Adventism from its early opposition to church organization to its highly institutionalized and bureaucratically structured contemporary form, and examines the denomination's geographical expansion from a small North American sect to a global church. The dictionary entries that constitute the bulk of the volume address individuals, organizations, institutions, and doctrines that have been important in the history of the church, including dissident movements and individuals who have emerged as critics of the denomination and its beliefs. Second, there are entries on the development and current situation of Adventism in many individual countries. Finally, thematic entries on such subjects as art, music, literature, health care, and women address other elements important to understanding church life. The dictionary entries are followed by a bibliography of scholarly and popular works published by the denomination, commercial and academic presses, and individuals and organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No biblical theme raises more fear or discouragement among Adventists than God's judgments, especially the pre-advent judgment. However, there is great news! The author reveals how our fear disappears when we accept Jesus, the righteous One, as our Substitute in the judgment. Learn how God's judgment illustrates His purpose of universal restoration and vindication in the context of His covenant, grace, and justification. Through a loving God's offer of justification by faith we can stand confidently in the judgment with Christ our Advocate. Discover joy in salvation by faith in Christ alone, that the pre-advent judgment is Christ-centered, not man-centered; it is not what you have done but what He has done for you! Judgment does not question your decision to accept Christ's sacrifice; it validates the decision you've already made! Finally, readers will find peaceful assurance that eternity won't begin until every human question has been answered to our satisfaction in the judgment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity may be the greatest story ever told, but in Western culture it is losing ground against the powerful forces of secularization. In examining the root causes of this cultural shift, does the church have anything to learn from secular society and the business sector? For decades the church has resisted the idea of using business methodologies in the religious sphere. Yet a closer look reveals that most church hierarchies have borrowed much of their organizational structure from the business sector. But the church is not alone in its borrowing. Today the lines between the church and the business sector are blurred, as both entities influence each other interchangeably. In Branded Faith, Rajkumar Dixit enters an engaging and intellectually stimulating analysis of what the church can learn from the business practices of marketing, branding, and contextualization. Using examples drawn from widely recognized companies such as Nike, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, and Subway, Dixit systematically builds a case for the power of a story, and emphasizes the importance of seeking culturally relevant ways to spread it. Those who care deeply about sharing Christianity powerfully and effectively will find in Branded Faith a thoughtful presentation of ideas on how to maintain the integrity of the gospel, while exploring fresh methods of communicating the good news to a postmodern society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one can deny that there are critical issues occurring in the church body today, regarding the church's stance on certain matters of life and ministry. However, the only truthful source to answer these concerns comes straight from the Bible, which is discussed at length in the nonfiction book, 24 Hot Potatoes in the Church today. Author Diane Hoffmann tackles twenty-four recognized worries in the church, which are not readily preached on pulpits. Several discussion points hinge on the gender gap in ministry between men and women, beginning with differences in men and women's brains and journey down to dialogues on sex in society (and church), divorce and the marriage covenant, and homosexuals and Christianity. Heavy topics such as pro-life and abortion and sins of pornography are balanced with topics about church program problems and heaven and hell. All are to dispel hypocritical judgment, while staying centered in the Bible.

Book excerpt: The Seventh-day Adventist church, formally organized in America in 1863, is today one of the fastest-growing Protestant movements in the world and defines itself as a prophetic remnant, raised up and commissioned by God to teach and preach a final message of warning to the world before the imminent return of Christ. From its beginnings, however, a sense of failure was built into the success of the fledgling movement. In order to preserve the message (the imminent return of Christ), Adventists had to erect institutions based on continuity and permanence. A dilemma emerged: medical institutions built to be conducive for separation from the world faced a this-worldly reality filled with requirements from various state entities: registration, approval, and so forth. Thus, Adventist medical institutions confronted constant challenges to their denominational and theological uniqueness. The emergence of this dilemma between aspirations of separateness and this-worldly reality was especially evident in the battle for Adventism’s sectarian identity, ethos, and future at the turn of the twentieth century—between Ellen G. White (a cofounder of the movement) and Dr. John H. Kellogg (an Adventist administrator and surgeon who sought to desectarianize the movement).

Book excerpt: Do you have questions about competition? Is anything wrong in having a competitive mind? Why is competition, like competitive sports, so controversial? Is competition only about success or failure? What's the difference between being competitive and engaging in competition? If you'd like to explore answers, this book is for you. Competition is something we take for granted like the ground we walk on, the air we breathe and the food we eat. While ground, air and food are essential, can the same be said of competition? Can we trust that competition's advocates know its pros and cons? Since competition touches everything, isn't it an acceptable part of life? Maybe it's time to challenge these assumptions. Would you be surprised to learn that competition is a common Bible topic? Incidents of competition are generously scattered throughout the Bible. If you desire a sound, authentic perspective on competition, one that zeroes in on its origin, nature, and effects, this book is your guide!
