Book excerpt: Nilpotence and Periodicity in Stable Homotopy Theory describes some major advances made in algebraic topology in recent years, centering on the nilpotence and periodicity theorems, which were conjectured by the author in 1977 and proved by Devinatz, Hopkins, and Smith in 1985. During the last ten years a number of significant advances have been made in homotopy theory, and this book fills a real need for an up-to-date text on that topic. Ravenel's first few chapters are written with a general mathematical audience in mind. They survey both the ideas that lead up to the theorems and their applications to homotopy theory. The book begins with some elementary concepts of homotopy theory that are needed to state the problem. This includes such notions as homotopy, homotopy equivalence, CW-complex, and suspension. Next the machinery of complex cobordism, Morava K-theory, and formal group laws in characteristic p are introduced. The latter portion of the book provides specialists with a coherent and rigorous account of the proofs. It includes hitherto unpublished material on the smash product and chromatic convergence theorems and on modular representations of the symmetric group.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics, which was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, in Germany, from April 5-11, 2009. This volume contains fourteen original research articles covering a broad range of topics that include: localization and rational homotopy theory, evaluation subgroups, free loop spaces, Whitehead products, spaces of algebraic maps, gauge groups, loop groups, operads, and string topology. In addition to reporting on various topics in the area, this volume is supposed to facilitate the exchange of ideas within Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces, and promote cross-fertilization between Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and other areas. With these latter aims in mind, this volume includes a survey article which, with its extensive bibliography, should help bring researchers and graduate students up to speed on activity in this field as well as a problems list, which is an expanded and edited version of problems discussed in sessions held at the conference. The problems list is intended to suggest directions for future work.

It is shown that when [italic]X is connected and simply connected then [italic]H*[italic]X has no indecomposables of even degree. As a consequence, [italic]H*([capital Greek]Omega[italic]X;[bold]Z) and [italic]K*[italic]X have no 2 torsion. The main result is proved by using Morava [script]K-theory.

By applying the notion of a twisted tensor product in the senses of Brown as well as of Hess, we construct an economical injective resolution to compute, as an algebra, the cotorsion product which is the $E_2$-term of the cobar type Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence converging to the cohomology of classifying space of the loop group $LG$. As an application, the cohomology $H^*(BLSpin(10); \mathbb{Z}/2)$ is explicitly determined as an $H^*(BSpin(10); \mathbb{Z}/2)$-module by using effectively the cobar type spectral sequence and the Hochschild spectral sequence, and further, by analyzing the TV-model for $BSpin(10)$.

Book excerpt: In recent work of Baas-Dundas-Richter-Rognes, the authors introduce the notion of the K- theory of a bimonoidal category R, and show that it is equivalent to the algebraic K-theory space of the ring spectrum KR. In this thesis we show that K(R) is the group completion of the classifying space of the 2-category ModR of modules over R, and show that ModR is a symmetric monoidal 2-category. We explain how to use this symmetric monoidal structure to produce a [Gamma]-(2-category), which gives an infinite loop space structure on K(R). We show that the equivalence mentioned above is an equivalence of infinite loop spaces.

Book excerpt: This exposition of the theory of finite Hopf spaces details the development of the subject over the last thirty years, with the homology of such spaces as its main theme. The three chief areas of study in the volume are: - The study of finite H-spaces with torsion free integral homology. - The study of finite H-spaces with homology torsion. - The construction of finite H-spaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph we give an exposition of some recent development in homotopy theory. It relates to advances in periodicity in homotopy localization and in cellular spaces. The notion of homotopy localization is treated quite generally and encompasses all the known idempotent homotopy functors. It is applied to K-theory localizations, to Morava-theories, to Hopkins-Smith theory of types. The method of homotopy colimits is used heavily. It is written with an advanced graduate student in topology and research homotopy theorist in mind.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of its first edition, this book has served as one of the few available on the classical Adams spectral sequence, and is the best account on the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. This new edition has been updated in many places, especially the final chapter, which has been completely rewritten with an eye toward future research in the field. It remains the definitive reference on the stable homotopy groups of spheres. The first three chapters introduce the homotopy groups of spheres and take the reader from the classical results in the field though the computational aspects of the classical Adams spectral sequence and its modifications, which are the main tools topologists have to investigate the homotopy groups of spheres. Nowadays, the most efficient tools are the Brown-Peterson theory, the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the chromatic spectral sequence, a device for analyzing the global structure of the stable homotopy groups of spheres and relating them to the cohomology of the Morava stabilizer groups. These topics are described in detail in Chapters 4 to 6. The revamped Chapter 7 is the computational payoff of the book, yielding a lot of information about the stable homotopy group of spheres. Appendices follow, giving self-contained accounts of the theory of formal group laws and the homological algebra associated with Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. The book is intended for anyone wishing to study computational stable homotopy theory. It is accessible to graduate students with a knowledge of algebraic topology and recommended to anyone wishing to venture into the frontiers of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of motives began in the early 1960s when Grothendieck envisioned the existence of a "universal cohomology theory of algebraic varieties". The theory of noncommutative motives is more recent. It began in the 1980s when the Moscow school (Beilinson, Bondal, Kapranov, Manin, and others) began the study of algebraic varieties via their derived categories of coherent sheaves, and continued in the 2000s when Kontsevich conjectured the existence of a "universal invariant of noncommutative algebraic varieties". This book, prefaced by Yuri I. Manin, gives a rigorous overview of some of the main advances in the theory of noncommutative motives. It is divided into three main parts. The first part, which is of independent interest, is devoted to the study of DG categories from a homotopical viewpoint. The second part, written with an emphasis on examples and applications, covers the theory of noncommutative pure motives, noncommutative standard conjectures, noncommutative motivic Galois groups, and also the relations between these notions and their commutative counterparts. The last part is devoted to the theory of noncommutative mixed motives. The rigorous formalization of this latter theory requires the language of Grothendieck derivators, which, for the reader's convenience, is revised in a brief appendix.

James Milgram at Stanford University in August 1999. The meeting brought together distinguished researchers from a variety of areas related to algebraic topology and its applications. Papers in the book present a wide range of subjects, reflecting the nature of the conference. Topics include moduli spaces, configuration spaces, surgerytheory, homotopy theory, knot theory, group actions, and more. Particular emphasis was given to the breadth of interaction between the different areas.

Book excerpt: In 1989-90 the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute conducted a program on Algebraic Topology and its Applications. The main areas of concentration were homotopy theory, K-theory, and applications to geometric topology, gauge theory, and moduli spaces. Workshops were conducted in these three areas. This volume consists of invited, expository articles on the topics studied during this program. They describe recent advances and point to possible new directions. They should prove to be useful references for researchers in Algebraic Topology and related fields, as well as to graduate students.
