Buckingham. Narvland has been buying land for state forests in that section of the State, and in addition to some of these lands, the party saw an excellent example of good silvicul ture in a Further east, in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the Station men paid a visit to the property of the Wilmore Real Estate Company, surface holder for the berwind-white Coal Mining Company. The total property of acres is being handled on a most intelligent basis; the acres of farm land are being rented for cash or on shares, and as soon as any land fails to pay its way for agricultural use it is planted with forest trees. However, the plantations of the Company, some of them very interesting, are by no means as significant as the acres of land in natural forest. The Company's policy with respect to standing timber is to make improvement cuttings at once, marking for removal all mature trees, and all poorly-formed, diseased, or damaged ones of smaller size. This timber is taken to a small portable sawmill in the woods, where it is most carefully sawed to produce the highest grade of boards, switch ties, and similar products. All cull boards are then sent to a small dimension plant run by the Company, where with the help of electrically driven but extremely simple equipment other wise worthless material is converted into dimension stock for'furniture and other woodworking plants, mine caps, contractors' wedges, sawdust, and some box stock. Utilization is extraordinarily complete, and stock is rarely hold more than two'or three months before being sold. We have never seen any mill operation so skilfully handled, and believe it to be almost unique in our territory; Mr. E. Burgess is the local manager responsible for this remarkable job. How feasible it would be to handle all of the hardwood lands in our territory in such a manner is of course a question, but without any doubt this particular operation demonstrates what can be done with a reasonably good forest capital. The smaller blanks left in the forest through sustain of the chestnut are being filled by the extension of the crowns of adjacent trees, princi pally oaks. These trees have shown an increased growth nearly twice as great as for the same length of time before the death of the chestnut. In southern New England the larger openings are for the most part being filled by seedlings and sprouts of valuable oaks, white ash and hickory.
