Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montgomery's first neighborhoods were nestled close to downtown for convenient shopping and working. In 1887, the electric trolley system made living beyond the city limits feasible. The first streetcar suburb, Highland Park, was developed the same year. Although Centennial Hill, Cottage Hill, the Garden District, and the Old Line Street neighborhoods existed before the trolley, it spurred their growth. Capitol Heights and Cloverdale incorporated as separate cities by 1908. Cloverdale Idlewild developed around the 1930s--by which time the automobile and bus line had replaced the trolley. Images of America: Montgomery's Historic Neighborhoods documents the changes from inner city to suburban residences and from mass transportation to the automobile. The images show the evolution of photography from formal, professional portraits to fun, family snapshots capturing birthday parties, pageants, pets, and everyday life. These compelling photographs also show how residents lived, worked, studied, worshipped, and played for over a century in Montgomery's historic neighborhoods.

Book excerpt: A globe-trotting, eye-opening exploration of how cities can—and do—make us happier people Charles Montgomery's Happy City will revolutionize the way we think about urban life. After decades of unchecked sprawl, more people than ever are moving back to the city. Dense urban living has been prescribed as a panacea for the environmental and resource crises of our time. But is it better or worse for our happiness? Are subways, sidewalks, and tower dwelling an improvement on the car-dependence of sprawl? The award-winning journalist Charles Montgomery finds answers to such questions at the intersection between urban design and the emerging science of happiness, and during an exhilarating journey through some of the world's most dynamic cities. He meets the visionary mayor who introduced a "sexy" lipstick-red bus to ease status anxiety in Bogotá; the architect who brought the lessons of medieval Tuscan hill towns to modern-day New York City; the activist who turned Paris's urban freeways into beaches; and an army of American suburbanites who have transformed their lives by hacking the design of their streets and neighborhoods. Full of rich historical detail and new insights from psychologists and Montgomery's own urban experiments, Happy City is an essential tool for understanding and improving our own communities. The message is as surprising as it is hopeful: by retrofitting our cities for happiness, we can tackle the urgent challenges of our age. The happy city, the green city, and the low-carbon city are the same place, and we can all help build it.

Book excerpt: In the early 1960s, architect and visionary Clarence Kettler and his brothers, Milton and Charles, dreamed of building a unique new town modeled after a European planned community. This town would be family oriented and would emphasize recreation with open space and a sense of community. With careful planning, their vision, which included schools, places of worship, a golf course, shopping areas, and recreational amenities, was realized--Montgomery Village. Over time, as the Village grew, farms were replaced by well-manicured residential areas and mature trees. Each community adheres to architectural standards and community covenants set by the developers to help maintain continuity and home values. Today, more than 40,000 people call Montgomery Village home. Montgomery Village takes pride in its active volunteers, parks, and recreational facilities and its commitment to maintain and enhance the natural environment and coexist with our many species of wildlife. Though no longer a new town, the Village continues to serve as an admirable and viable model for communities everywhere. The year 2011 marks Montgomery Village's 45th anniversary.

Book excerpt: The story of the evolution of the urban freeway, the competing visions that informed it, and the emerging alternatives for more sustainable urban transportation. Urban freeways often cut through the heart of a city, destroying neighborhoods, displacing residents, and reconfiguring street maps. These massive infrastructure projects, costing billions of dollars in transportation funds, have been shaped for the last half century by the ideas of highway engineers, urban planners, landscape architects, and architects -- with highway engineers playing the leading role. In Changing Lanes, Joseph DiMento and Cliff Ellis describe the evolution of the urban freeway in the United States, from its rural parkway precursors through the construction of the interstate highway system to emerging alternatives for more sustainable urban transportation. DiMento and Ellis describe controversies that arose over urban freeway construction, focusing on three cases: Syracuse, which early on embraced freeways through its center; Los Angeles, which rejected some routes and then built I-105, the most expensive urban road of its time; and Memphis, which blocked the construction of I-40 through its core. Finally, they consider the emerging urban highway removal movement and other innovative efforts by cities to re-envision urban transportation.

Book excerpt: Images of America: Historic Silver Spring celebrates the community's past, beginning with founder Francis Preston Blair's 1840 discovery of the mica-flecked spring and the 1873 arrival of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Vintage photographs document the progressive growth of the "Main Streets," Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road, and the construction of the Silver Spring Armory and National Dry Cleaning Institute in 1927 and the Silver Theatre and Silver Spring Shopping Center in 1938. The volume culminates with modern pictures of downtown Silver Spring's 21st-century revitalization, which continues to preserve the past and secure the future of the area. In a pictorial journey through the community's Central Business District and bordering residential neighborhood, East Silver Spring, Historic Silver Spring honors the people and places that have come before.
